Randy Quaid: From Respected Actor to Suspected Felon

After allegedly fleeing from a $10,000 bill at the upscale San Ysidro Ranch in Santa Babra, CA, Randy Quaid's reputation has been diminished.

Randy Quaid's friends still think well of him. "He's a really nice guy and insanely funny," Allan Evangelista tells PEOPLE after working with the actor on his most recent film, 'Balls Out: The Gary Houseman Story.'

"Everyone was just trying not to laugh when he would improvise. He's really down to earth ... just a cool guy to work with," Evangelista added.

And the 'Brokeback Mountain' star's lawyer defends him and his wife, Evi.

"They were never on the run from the law. They have a history of 20 years of staying at [the San Ysidro Ranch], and they have a history of always paying ... There's a lot of misinformation out there about this. It's much ado about nothing," Rod Ponton says of their legal troubles.

The pair missed four court appearances, leading to a warrant for their arrest. However, they recently posted bond. Ponton also explains that the bill for the hotel has been paid.

Not everyone is happy with them, though.

In September when Evi resisted arrest regarding the hotel incident, she taped a sign up that said "Davis takes payment$," referring to the police officer James Davis, who tried to take her into custody. Davis has since sued her for defamation.

Yet Evi's estranged father jumps to her defense.

"These are nice people. Evi is very flamboyant and really into that Hollywood scene. She has a real artistic flair. Randy is a great guy," George Motolanez describes to PEOPLE.

Many credit the couple's downward spiral with a rift with the Actors' Equity Association, when complaints were filed against Randy, leading him to be ousted.

"After that, [Evi] flipped," private investigator Becky Altringer says. "That's when she started saying everyone was against them, and now she's saying I'm against them."

Furthermore, several actors filed restraining orders against Randy's wife, adding to their troubles.

Despite everything, Ponton insists this will end well for his clients.

"It's just a minor deal that's going to probably get worked out. They're both nice, reputable people. They're artists, they're a little different, but they're not criminals."

Part of the problem is the insane law that makes failure to pay a hotel a crime.

Any other default in a civil contract gets settled in civil court - unless criminal fraud is alleged. If I buy a TV with a credit card and don't pay . . . I get sued, not arrested. At some time in the distant past, the hotel lobby was so powerful they got failure to pay a hotel bill deemed a felony.

It's absurd, and amounts to debtor's prison.

I have ALWAYS been a fanatical fan of both Quaid brothers and adore Randy & Dennis both (and proud to call them fellow Texans). I first heard about this situation with Randy & his wife sometime back but there were no details until I read this posting that explains it. I'll give Randy the benefit of the doubt since I've not heard what he has to say BUT, I can say that I am extremely disappointed in him after reading these details... and as for his wife saying the policeman "accepted cash", I think that was a very low-blow, a cheap & tacky thing to say...BOO, Evi = you obviously have no class at all. Shame on you !!

Ask any actor in Seattle if Quaid is "a nice guy." The man's an assh*le. His rift with Actor's Equity happened here in Seattle, where he was a vile creature to have to work with. His wife also threw herself into the nightmare. She's an absolute monster.

It's just another case of "I'm famous, so I do whatever I want to do, and what I want to do is terrorize everyone around me."

I agree 100% about Evi.

In reference to Youngblood's comment on Evi being sent to be mistreated & abused by the soccer player = I just saw the film clips of that *itch soccer player on the news today and was stunned to say the least...watch it on the news or find it on the internet = you will not believe your eyes at how many times this idiot physically hit, yanked, kicked and was VERY violent with the other team's members during a game. I could not believe the game officials did not remove her from the game immediately...they are to blame for allowing her to continue playing. I hope she's banned from soccer for life !!!

Who's kidding who...Look, I'll be the first one to tell you that Randy Quaid is a really funny actor who has had many a great comedy role but let's call a spade a spade. He and his wife purposely skipped out of paying a large hotel bill and clearly had no intention of paying for their stay, end of story! So please...no sugar coating this incident...next time it's cash up front!

Excuse me, but "nice people" as her estranged father calls them, don't repeatedly stiff hotels or harass cops and others who dare tell the truth about them. And blaming the fact that they are just "artists" doesn't hold water, either. They must be doing a lot of drugs to look and act as crazy as they have been lately.
