Johnny Depp is the Sexiest Man Alive... But Why Now?

Johnny Depp has pulled off the Sexiest Man Alive twofer. Now, PopEater agrees that Mr. Depp is indeed one sexy hunk of man meat, but why is he making his second appearance on PEOPLE's list just now? It seems like there are some very strong contenders out there that Depp, who has been absent from the Hollywood scene for awhile, beat out for the award (paging Mr. Pattinson).

Could his relative elusiveness have contributed to his sexy status? Mystery and unavailability always lure the ladies in. Our experts weigh in after the jump.

"When I clicked on People.com this morning and saw Johnny named Sexiest Man Alive, I was briefly confused what year it was," says style expert Nadine Jolie, author of 'Beauty Confidential'. "Then I remembered that he has a new movie coming, and it made a bit more sense (gotta love the ol Hollywood publicity machine!). The years are creeping up on him a bit, but there's no denying hes still delectable and I'm just thrilled People named anybody but Teenage Orgasm McPattinson."

Yes, it may seem like Johnny has been out of the spotlight, but just because he hasn't landed in the gossip magazines for smooching starlets and punching photographers lately doesn't mean he hasn't been working. Depp starred as menace to society John Dillinger in 'Public Enemies'. In 2007, he starred in 'Sweeney Todd' and 'Pirates of the Caribbean'. And his turn as the Mad Hatter in 'Alice in Wonderland' hits big screens next March.

"At the end of the day, Johnny is the sexiest man alive because he is sexy as a Mad Hatter, as a Pirate and with scissors on his hands. He has a man mane to die for even when it looks like he hasn't washed it in days," said grooming expert Margaret Kelly of Lock & Mane. "Show us another guy with that kind of range and we will gladly strip Mr. Depp of his sexy crown."

This is the second time that Johnny has been given the sexy man title. He also took the honor in 2003, and now joins the elite club of double honorees - and that is what has some folks up in arms.

"The weird thing is that this is his second time getting this honor, joining the ranks of George Clooney and Brad Pitt, both men that should have gotten their third mention before Depp got his second. Pitt and Clooney, definitely sexy. Depp is more of creepy guy in shop class sexy," said PopWrap's Ryan Brockington.

Depp is uuuugly! His face looks like a cow's butt!!! The scrawny turd doesn't even have a chiseled body, no six pack, he slouch like a hunchback, and has puny weak chin! Even my left nut is better looking than he is!

Robert Pattinson is to young to have really earned the title. Sean Connery won it when he was 60. It's not just about how the man looks but also how he carries himself. George is still in the running (always will be) but Brad's been acting way immature lately.

Gag! Johnny Depp is no way, shape or form sexy! Neither is that Pattinson boy. They're in the same class as Marc Anthony -- scrawny, malnourished, smelly, crypt keeper, I sleep upside down, walking dead, let me introduce you to a bar of soap & shampoo type of guys. I think Ryan Reynolds should be sexiest man alive, hands down (after my boyfriend, of course)!

I think they got it right. Johnny has always had the looks. "A Nightmare on Elm Street," he was adorable. He is in good shape. You don't have to have alot of muscle to be sexy, but he does have muscles. He has been lots of movies with his shirt off (Public Enemies)in a tight t shirt he looked good. Anyway being sexy isn't always about looks, it's about personality, sense of humor, kindness, etc. Johnny has proven how important his fans are too him. Voted best signer. He goes out of his way to show that he appreciates his fans. He might run from Paps, but not from his fans. He might not look like a fashion model all the time, but who cares, that him. When he is on the red carpet at the Oscars, he is very handsome.

People got it right, which is a shocker. What men don't get is that is it is not about the 6-pack, its about the confidence and sense of self. You often see gorgeous women with so-so looking guys and (if it isn't about money) its about the charisma, baby. Depp is confident in his skin, he doesn't have to say it for you to know he feels he's got not a thing to prove. And by the way boys, macho bull**** and treating women like objects is the very opposite of sexy, masculine confidence. What Johnny for pointers. I am so relieved the title was not given to Pattison. He's a pretty boy, but he's got no sense of who he is yet, which makes him too self conscious to really exude sexual energy.

jealous much? On another note, I don't think Geoge Clooney is that great. When I think of a man named George I usually think of a man on dollar bill with a white wig, nothing sexy abou that. Brad Pitt: ehhhh, I never saw what was great about him either, a generic type of good looking I guess. Orlando Bloom is my favorite though, but I love Johnny too! Yes, Johnny is a freaky type of hottt but I soo love that. If everybody had the same opinion, this world would be borning. But really, he looks like a cows ass? Why are you looking at the behinds of cows?
