Even before his 'American Music Awards' performance became the most talked about musical TV appearance since a certain singer (cough cough Janet Jackson) flashed America during the Super Bowl, Adam Lambert knew that his brazen style and love of theatrics was going to be polarizing. "If you are in the public eye and you are a certain type of persona, you're putting certain ideas out there you're bound to have people look up to them. You're also bound to have people who completely reject them and hate you for it," Lambert told Popeater exclusively when we visited him in the L.A. offices of his management team, 19 Management. "I could be somebody's role model, but on the flip side I could be somebody's worst nightmare at the same time. You never know how you're going to affect people, being in this position." Even before his 'American Music Awards' performance became the most talked about musical TV appearance since a certain singer (cough cough Janet Jackson) flashed America during the Super Bowl, Adam Lambert knew that his brazen style and love of theatrics was going to be polarizing. You never know how you're going to affect people, being in this position." More Role Model Talk After the Jump! For Lambert, as an openly gay pop idol, he is also aware that just as there people who are going to form very strong opinions about him, he will be a source of inspiration to others looking for the courage to express themselves. In short he will be a role model as he says. To him that's both inspiring and odd.
"The role model thing is interesting, it's kind of like a catch 22," he says. "Part of me is like, 'That's flattering.' And if I'm helping people find truth in their lives or lead lives are more open themselves, if they feel that they also want to be comfortable in their skin, than that's great. If I can inspire that I'm thrilled."
At the same time he also wants people to know he's not openly trying to be a mentor or icon.
"But, I'm also a musician. I'm not standing here trying to show anybody how to live their lives or what the best way is or how to fix themselves, necessarily," he says. "I'm just offering my opinion. If that make me a role model, indirectly then so be it, that's great, but I don't want to take on that responsibility. I'm just trying to put on a show."
And Lambert promises when he gets on the road 'For Your Entertainment,' he's not going to tone down. He is looking to put the show back into concerts. "I want some production values, I want there to be stuff to look at, and I want costumes, dancers, if I can get it. That's my dream," he says.
Who does he look to for inspiration as performers? "Back in the 70's you had acts like Queens, a showman that really controlled the stage and Robert Plant of Led Zeppelin is someone who really worked the stage. There are people like that that I look to for stage presence and how to command," he says. "As for production values you look at later, people like Michael Jackson, Janet Jackson, Madonna big pop acts that put on spectacles and brought theatricality into pop music. Somewhat marrying the two of those things is kind of a dream of mine. It's that rock command meets a theatrical stage show."

I've seen raunchier acts by women. I think people look down at a man doing this type of act.

How can this possibly get raunchier? The only raunchier show that women put on would be in a cheap strip club but bad lap dancers. And how dare this fool liken himself to Freddie Mercury OR Robert Plant? He has less that one quarter the talent of either of these two greats, and absolutely none of the true stage presence. AS openly gay as Freddie was, he never even tried to go as far as Lambert went. I never once saw Freddie or Robert face hump anyone on stage! Thsi no talent AI loser needs to learn about his audience and what he will quickly find as his downfall. He also basically says he doesn't care if he is a role model or not. That's cool, if he were doing bad soft porn, but his guy is doing open shows where children could be watching. And he can't use the late hour excuse, because everyone knows that many parents will let their kids watch these shows BECAUSE of the stage shows that happen. This is something that helps shape and mold a kids affinity to music. It may not be a classroom, but it is somethign that does seem to be a big draw for the musical interests of kids and adults alike.
I agree with Jim. Freddie loved and respected his audience, he was there performing FOR them, not in spite of them. But I do have to point out one glaring inaccuracy... Freddie was NEVER openly gay to the public.
Even if you really have seen raunchier acts by women, I bet you it wasn't on ABC. That is a family channel and children watch this show. I think his act was entirely unappropriate and distatesful.
I totally agree with you. No one made a big thing of it when 2 girls were kissing. They replayed that over and over again. Now that it's 2 guys...look what's happening. Go ADAM and don't let anyone tell you not to be yourself.
If that make me a role model, indirectly then so be it, that's great,
those are his words... think again big boy, no one wants you as a role model .. no parent would ever want that. most young adults do reject it, you will have a very small audience if you persist. and I doubt that over time if you continue with this format, that you will go very far.. no you are not going to carry that sinful message to the masses.. you will get rightfully rejected.. however there is hope.. hate the sin and not the sinner... that is your hope
Well, yeah... it just is nastier when it is guy on guy. No one said life was fair. It was a huge miscalculation by Lambert. Tolerant is one thing, but to have things showcased is going to a whole other level. He screwed up and it may tank his career if he doesnt watch it. He should be apologizing.
It isn't a he NOR a she. An IT is more accurate. My daughters even got up and turned the show off the other night, saying things I don't hear them usually say. The TV network that 'un-invited' him afterwards was correct in their actions.
He's on the path of the Queen queer. When he is on his death bed, hacking a fighting for that last breath, he will likely be wishing he did it the way God had it planned. It wasn't to be Adam and Steve! He nuked the town that started that blatantly.
Why would a guy like to fondle other men's penises and make them ejaculate? Go ahead and try to convince me that's not whacked out nut case behavior? I promise I'll listen.
Don't worry about the nightmare thing Adam, I don't think anyone is losing much sleep over you, except maybe the television people. At least Good Morning America canceled you. Chalk up one for the television people.
You are right, it is sickening.
I cannot stand DOUBLE STANDARDS.
MEN and WOMAN are showing their true colors, you should be up in arms when woman do it AS WELL!
Usually keeping a child in the closet is a bad thing but in this case, the child needs to go back in the closet and give all of us good people a break.
Thinking back.Madonna shocked many, with her dress / behavior and sexual undertones. we all LIVED!!
AL is an artist/ artist express themselves/ like or not/ no skin off your ass? I just wish when I'm grown up. I can be a narrow minded as you people, what a wonderful world it will be!!!NOT!
yes, adam is gay. whoop-t-friggin-do.. congrats. I loved him on Idol and I love his voice, but that little "debacle" that he call a performance made me turn off my tv. I have no problem with men being gay, if thats the life you wanna lead, go right ahead b/c i'm no person to judge you. If he wants to do that on tour then fine, but i believe he should have toned it down considering children were watching this show. It was a bit distasteful and truthfully disappointed me greatly b/c i expected so much more from him.
Adam gives gay people a bad name. It's expected isn't it? To be flaboient and over the top. If we are to be respected and accepted we need to show some class and morals. Gay people can have those things too. I personnaly don't want to be tolerated, I want to be accepted.
Yes, I`ve seen raunchy acts by women too and I was just as disgusted as I was this. Let them take their simulated sex act to the strip clubs where kids won`t we subjected to it.
What ever your sexual preference is that is your buisness. Saying that you do not have to take it to the AMA NAD MAKE IT DIRTY. This to show your talent not this kind of raunchy act. Do not get it what did prove?
Bottom line, all gays need to be hunted down and shot...
the only claim to fame this little flamer has is way too much guyliner and the shock and revultion incited by his routine. when [and IF] he develops any real talent, all the stupidity surrounding it won't matter so much.
Normally, I don't care about anyone elses sexual orientation but this flamer really makes my skin crawl with the way he flaunts his quest for AIDS. I hope he succeeds...
