Even before his 'American Music Awards' performance became the most talked about musical TV appearance since a certain singer (cough cough Janet Jackson) flashed America during the Super Bowl, Adam Lambert knew that his brazen style and love of theatrics was going to be polarizing. "If you are in the public eye and you are a certain type of persona, you're putting certain ideas out there you're bound to have people look up to them. You're also bound to have people who completely reject them and hate you for it," Lambert told Popeater exclusively when we visited him in the L.A. offices of his management team, 19 Management. "I could be somebody's role model, but on the flip side I could be somebody's worst nightmare at the same time. You never know how you're going to affect people, being in this position." Even before his 'American Music Awards' performance became the most talked about musical TV appearance since a certain singer (cough cough Janet Jackson) flashed America during the Super Bowl, Adam Lambert knew that his brazen style and love of theatrics was going to be polarizing. You never know how you're going to affect people, being in this position." More Role Model Talk After the Jump! For Lambert, as an openly gay pop idol, he is also aware that just as there people who are going to form very strong opinions about him, he will be a source of inspiration to others looking for the courage to express themselves. In short he will be a role model as he says. To him that's both inspiring and odd.
"The role model thing is interesting, it's kind of like a catch 22," he says. "Part of me is like, 'That's flattering.' And if I'm helping people find truth in their lives or lead lives are more open themselves, if they feel that they also want to be comfortable in their skin, than that's great. If I can inspire that I'm thrilled."
At the same time he also wants people to know he's not openly trying to be a mentor or icon.
"But, I'm also a musician. I'm not standing here trying to show anybody how to live their lives or what the best way is or how to fix themselves, necessarily," he says. "I'm just offering my opinion. If that make me a role model, indirectly then so be it, that's great, but I don't want to take on that responsibility. I'm just trying to put on a show."
And Lambert promises when he gets on the road 'For Your Entertainment,' he's not going to tone down. He is looking to put the show back into concerts. "I want some production values, I want there to be stuff to look at, and I want costumes, dancers, if I can get it. That's my dream," he says.
Who does he look to for inspiration as performers? "Back in the 70's you had acts like Queens, a showman that really controlled the stage and Robert Plant of Led Zeppelin is someone who really worked the stage. There are people like that that I look to for stage presence and how to command," he says. "As for production values you look at later, people like Michael Jackson, Janet Jackson, Madonna big pop acts that put on spectacles and brought theatricality into pop music. Somewhat marrying the two of those things is kind of a dream of mine. It's that rock command meets a theatrical stage show."

I just have to say this, he may be able to sing but he seems to get in his own way of being a great singer. And why does he have to always stick his tongue out every dam time he sings! It makes me want to throw up. He has talent but hes just to freaky!
Reply
He sticks his tongue out because it changes the pitch of his voice. Do you ever notice it is when he hits the high notes that he does this? Your voice is an instrument and because everyone is built differently, you need to move your vocal cords a certain way to get the range you are capable of getting.
I seem to remember a big scandal with some guy named Elvis "the pelvis". I wonder what happened to his career. History repeats itself.

His fifteen minutes are over. He had a shot at stardom and decided to push his queer agenda instead. He could have at least waited until he had his foot in the door. His AMA performance was pathetic. ABC is right by canning his azz. If there are any FCC fines, Adam should be the one to pay them.

Ditto. Adam you blew it. That was disgusting. Those "intimate" moments should not have been your "maiden voyage." I could not wait until your album came you. It was to be my "GIFT" of the year. But not now. Again...disgusting...you will never be an ICON if you continue to create such perverted displays of what you believe is TALENT? There are other ways to Entertain. Please clean it up!!!
Well, Mr. Roll Model, I hope you enjoyes your momentin the sun. Cause you just sat your own career in the proverbial toilet.
But, of course you did.

this goes out to ron, you make me sick and i hope you go out worse than rock hudson. i am a gay man and yes i was turned off by adams theatrics, but what you said was uncalled for. grow up !!!

His performance was so over the top it reminded me of a drag queen show at a casino. The song? Awful. Adam has a rocker voice, why is he doing dance/pop?

The AMA awards and their place in American Culture were summed up when "Snoop Dog," stated, "that he knew something else that could get you higher," than the AMA award cerimonies! This declaration says it all as to what this country considers valuable. It reveals what little respect the media and our society in general have for our youth and how we are viewed world wide. Adam Lambert's display of a want to be showman, who has yet to prove himself shows the level at which he has already been exploited. The Soul of America has sold it's self for the pursuit of money and drugs.

seems to be that he thinks hes some kind of a god to be worshipped.. well hes far from that. i didnt watch the show because im not into filth like that but i happened to see a pic of his disgusting act on the pc news.. all i can say is hes a bad role model and a no talent bum. back in my days musicians didnt do filth like that. shame on you lampert. your parents must be ashamed of the kinda kid you turned out to be.

I can't stand this poor excuse of a singer! I hope his "career" is up in about 15 minutes. He was quoted as saying hes not a babysitter and kids shouldn't have been up that late to see his performance on AMA's...well I have news for u, those kids you don't babysit are the reason u made it as far as u did on AI! So if the only people u are here to entertain is gay adults, then it looks like you have about 10 minutes left!!!

I agree with you. He seems to admit that his act was not for kids. Up late or not. ABC is Disney owned and is a family station! I'm glad Good Morning America cancelled his appearance. And his raunchy performances need to be saved for the bedroom or that station "Logo" or whatever it is.
sick puppy should be gone

He's both. He's the kids role model making him the parents worst nightmare.

Adam was terrific on the morning CBS show. Thanks to them for having him on. Love those liberals who push the gay world everywhere except if they haven't sanctioned it first. Go Adam. From a 75-year old who loves his extraordinary talent and knows he will ricochet off the walls on his way to stardom.

Explain if you may , and I know you will try. Adam
Lambert gave the f... you finger to the audience and the TV audience. Was that total disrespect and being a degenerate ??//
I think Adam is the victim of a double standard...women have been doing much worse than that for years. Give him a break!
