Susan Boyle Destroys U.S. Chart Records

You've had a good week,
Susan Boyle. The
'Britain's Got Talent' star sold an astounding 701,000 copies of her debut album,
'I Dreamed a Dream,' in the U.S., giving her the best first week sales of 2009 and the best-selling debut album by any woman since SoundScan began tracking in 1991.
It's also the biggest debut album by any artist since Snoop Dogg's 'Doggystyle' in 1993.
Her record label, Columbia, said Wednesday that 'Dream' has moved a whopping 3 million copies around the world in its opening week.
Also amazing is the way people purchased the album. Although digital sales have grown for years -- with iTunes being the main beneficiary -- consumers headed back to the record store for Boyle's debut.
Columbia chairman Steve Barnett told the
New York Times that only about 39,000 of Ms. Boyle's total in the United States were sold through iTunes. Consumers could also purchase the album on shopping network QVC.
"The reason that this record really did what it did," Mr. Barnett told the Times, "was that people wanted to get it and own it, to feel like they're a part of it."
Before Boyle, the biggest seller of the year was Eminem's 'Relapse.'
It was not, however, a record-breaking week for a decidedly different reality star: Adam Lambert. The 'American Idol' runner-up opened at No. 3 with 198,000 copies sold.

Bravo Susan!! Simply wonderful !! I only wish you'd have included less secular songs and experimented more with several of the old pop covers. I love Wild Horses and your version of Madonna's You'll See. But with 3 million copies sold so far, I understand why you included Amazing Grace and How Great Thou Art. Diversity makes the world go round...adn sells plenty more records!!
I am so happy for her. She has such a beautiful voice she deserves the recognition.

Good for Susan! Good for Adam!

Good for her! Of note, USA's midwest mothers & all baby-boomers helped her achieve this.
Also, re: "consumers headed back to the record store for Boyle's debut" ... just proves old people don't/can't download music.

While some of us (the "older people" you so kindly referred to) don't know how to download music, that's certainly not true for many. Some perhaps don't care to download music, preferring the experience of listening to the "hard copy" of a total CD. My point is, our musical choices are just as valid as those of a teen or twenty-something. That's what makes the musical world great; there's something to suit everyone's taste.
Actually, it's not that older people cannot download music, it's that there is nothing like an origianl recording. Of course, someone who has never experienced that would not understand. You see, there is more to life than downloading, sometimes one likes the original. You take what you want but you pay for it. You can e-mail from here to eternity, but those e-mails will disappear eventually. Deleted or otherwise. But the great, poetic, magnificent letters written by lovers, people in general or just plain folks with actual, not artificial feelings, have lasted through the centuries. Now go download Homer, Shakespeare, Jane Austin, etc. Those were WRITTEN now electronically manufactured. Try reading a REAL book sometime, or listening to Tchakovsky's Swan Lake played by a live orchestra. You will see the difference.
Maybe the "old folks" are too busy WORKING, instead of downloading music.
Ma'am, it's because of the internet I made my first million in my 20's. What are you doing with your life?
NO....it shows people appreciate talent. Obviously the ignorant do not.
"I Dreamed A Dream" was #1 on itunes on Black Friday....so it was a bad week for SUSAN BOYLE!
she rocked the world and the USA!
Not don't or can't, WON'T! I prefer to not let someone keep track of my music choices, and the fact that "young'uns" don't care enough about their music to get off their rears and go to a real store says something unpleasant about them.
Your right Little LA boy. And guess what, one day your going to be old too, if somebody doesn't slap your smart mouth off first
I'm 56 years old, and downloaded Susan's album.
I also bought a few CD's to give as gifts.
I guess we could say that the only reason the YOUNG people sell their albums is because kids buy them.
How her CD was bought doesn't matter, nor does the age of the people that bought it.
What does matter is that it was indeed bought, by MANY people.
LA BOY - How? Peddling your ass?
I think part of the fact that people are heading back to the record store for Boyle is that she is a true rags to riches story. The small town gal done good. Not young, blonde and marketable with marginal talent. I know that I personally am not a huge fan of some of the songs on her album but I am going to buy it. I feel like I am making a statement and giving support to someone who deserves it and to do that I am going to walk into a record store to do it.
And by the way LA Boy if you are in your 20's why do you use "Boy" in your screen name? LMAO!! Oh yeah, I made my first million by 19... Ha ha ha, you kids are just too funny!!
Hey LA Boy. I'm old and I know how to download music. Smart butt lil pickle. LOL....
WAY TO GO SUSAN. I know that album will be on my Christmas list.
God Bless you!
LA Boy, yes they can, and did. Hope you make it to a "old person".
Don't know how to download music? Well honey, most of us know how to do that just fine. And some of us did buy from itunes and still bought hard copy CDs. We wanted the actual CD for lots of reasons, none of them include not knowing how to download an album.
It doesn't matter what age group bought her CDs, all that matters is that they are selling. Maybe some of those young artist ought to start targeting us older folks. We are the ones who have the money and we aren't afraid to spend it. However, we expect to spend our money on class not on someone pretending he is getting BJs on prime time TV, or someone who must roll around on the floor, shaking their ass and howling like a wolf.
hey LA chump you need to change your diaper...
