Celebrity Serial Marriers: Is Tiger Next?
By Amber James Posted Dec 4th 2009 03:00PM
This past weekend, Tom Arnold tied the knot... for the fourth time. Love, dating and marriage can be difficult under the Hollywood microscope, and Arnold isn't the first celebrity to be considered a "serial marrier." Even American television and radio host Larry King has said "I Do" a measly eight times! Multiple marriages are a growing trend among celebrities, and our experts weigh in.

The tabloids are constantly churning out stories of break-ups, make-ups and scandals, so it's easy to understand why celebrities have a tough time staying with their husbands and wives for very long. The whispers of "is it or isn't true?" can be the breaking point in a marriage that seems otherwise stable. In addition, living in the fish bowl of Hollywood surrounded by hundreds of beautiful men and women can turn an otherwise nice guy or gal into a serial marrier, says Lisa Daily, an expert dating coach and author of 'How to Date Like a Grown-Up.'
"If Tom Arnold or Larry King were an auto mechanic or insurance salesman, any other profession, they would not be approached a hundred times a day by beautiful twenty-year-old girls. That doesn't happen in the real world. But in Hollywood, it is going to happen. For any person to withstand that constant onslaught of attractive people just throwing themselves in your path that takes serious will power. I'm sure even really nice guys succumb to that," Daily tells PopEater.
Case in point: Tiger Woods. He married his first (and only) wife Elin Nordegren in 2004, and they have two children together. But the pro golfer's squeaky clean image hit a bump in the road when allegations of infidelity surfaced. So what went wrong?
Ellen Fein and Sherrie Schneider, dating coaches and authors of 'The Rules,' believe Woods' wife is really the one to blame. "Men want to be happy, and it's up to the woman to be easy to live with, say yes to sex, make him dinner and be concerned about him. Not the other way around," Schneider tells PopEater.
"Every paper is saying Elin didn't have enough sex with him. If the sex was drying up, she should have been saying yes the whole time. Tiger is so over her. When you text other women hundreds of times, it's over," Fein adds. "When a woman gets so wrapped up in botox or nail appointments and forgets about him, he'll forget about her."
Disposable relationships seem like typical Hollywood behavior. Elizabeth Taylor has tied the knot eight times with seven different husbands, and Billy Bob Thornton has tied the knot 5 times -- even though most fans will only remember his fling with Angelina Jolie.
"If you're living in a world of instant gratification, it's going to be more challenging to work through the problems in your relationship, especially when it seems easier to just get a replacement. But if they really want to be with the same person til death do us part, these celebrities should really consider the reasons why the previous marriages failed," Daily says. "Instead of solving whatever challenge it is in the relationship, stars are just trading one wife in for a new one."
Schneider thinks woman are the ones who are glue in keeping relationships in tact. "When you are at the top of an industry, whether it's golf of movies, you are easily bored. If you want to prevent him from cheating, you have to be on your toes. You have to look good. You have to have interests. Guys will get bored with a woman that isn't doing much with herself physically or mentally."
Perhaps these serial marriers can look to long-lasting relationships in Hollywood to understand the key to keeping a marriage intact. "Couples like Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones have made it work. And look at Jessica Seinfeld. She is writing cookbooks and is just like a housewife, toting on Jerry Seinfeld. Even if you have a big career, his career always comes first. You have to let him be king of the castle and make him happy instead of getting what you want," Fein advises.
While there's still hope for Woods, Daily knows it's going to take a lot of work. "Tiger Woods is a human being. This guy has been perfect since he was very, very young. No human can sustain that. We screw up. He is in a situation now where he has two fairly young children and he's been married for a while, so the shine starts to wear off the relationship. It's harder.... If they want to patch things up, they need to be really committed to doing that, and Elin can't hold this over his head if they want to move forward."
Both Fein and Schneider believe that "multiple cheating is not negotiable," and Tiger and Elin "shouldn't stay married for prenuptial money or children... They both deserve to be happy, but not together."

The quoted authors are IDIOTS and are living in the 1950's!!!
I used to be Suzy Homemaker to my husband, cooked, cleaned etc, etc, ad nauseum!!! He still bailed out on me after almost 25 years of marriage!!!
I say all women should make sure they are educated if they choose to get married...so they have something to fall back on!!! Thankfully, i was, and i am now thriving, without a husband!!! never again!!!!!

In some arabian countries, it is legal to have a wife, or several wives and concubines. Maybe that is where Tiger picked up his practices when visiting Dubai.

Are you sure that these were women that wrote this? It sounds like something from the fifties!

What freaking idiots putting the blame on the wife. Every cheating man tells the other woman his wife won't put out.

He should have just jack slapped his old lady and told her to go wash some dishes or go feed the dogs and she better "hope I continue feeding you too beee-atcch!" Women is all too full of they selfs. You got to take them down a peg or two.

Celebreties think rules don't apply to them. The have no morals at all. If they want to cheat, get a divorce, then run around. Don't ruin the sacred vows of marriage. Tiger alone made his decision. I have been married 61 years and would not ever put up with anything like that.
I guess both egomaniacs, Tiger and Obama, are falling off their pedetals.

This article is a piece of crap. Trying to blame Tiger's wife is just so lame. Most times a woman can do everything for a man and he'll wind up cheating anyway. Marriage isn't about the world revolving around the man and what's only important to him but most men I've met seem to think that way.

Tiger did not only let down his family and tarnished his reputation, he also let down all the young children that look up to him and see him as a role model, all just for a few hours of self gratification

This has to be a joke. Any expert that tells a woman that she has to be a submissive stepford wife so that her husband doesn't disregard his marriage vows is clueless. On the one hand, we're told men like mystery and the unattainable and now we're being told to limit out vocabulary to ,"Yes, Dear." Maybe if he was putting as much effort into his marriage as he put into cheating, he would have been happy at home. It takes two to make a marriage work, and excusing someone for breaking their wedding vows because women throw themselves at him is a cop out.

Just a little correction, your article states:
"Billy Bob Thornton has tied the knot 5 times -- even though most fans will only remember his fling with Angelina Jolie."
Billy Bob was married to Angelina for 3 years, so I would not refer to it as a "fling", implying an affair.
