Uma Thurman Breaks Off Engagement

Uma Thurman is now 8 carats lighter.

The actress called off her year-long engagement to hedge fund manager Arpad Busson, PEOPLE reports. "The engagement ended awhile back – almost two months ago," says their source. "They remain friends."

Thurman, 39, ended the engagement on November 15, but NY Post columnist Cindy Adams was first to reveal the news in her column today. Busson proposed in the summer of 2008 with an 8-carat diamond ring, but Thurman won't be keeping any souvenirs. "She will probably give it back," says the source. "She wants to return everything that is his."

Apparently, Busson is "beside himself."

Thurman told W Magazine back in September that they weren't in any rush to get married. "I'm happily engaged, but we haven't set a wedding up," she said. "One day we'll do it, when we're ready...We can't live anywhere else because my children's father lives here."

Thurman has two children with her ex-husband, actor Ethan Hawke. Busson also has two children from a previous relationship with supermodel Elle MacPherson.

I've seen Judge Judy and other Court TV shows and the woman must return the ring because the ring is given in promise to marry. When the engagement is broken so is that promise and the would be bride must return the ring. Judge Judy is never wrong!

Actually, it depends on the state and who ended the engagement. Not all states have the same rules. In California, if the woman ends the engagement, she has to give the ring back because it is accepted when making a promise to marry. If he ended, she could have legally kept the ring.
