Going Nude in 'Potter' the Right Move for Daniel Radcliffe

Naked
Harry Potter? That's the rumor about the new installment of the children's wizarding series. David Yates, director of 'Harry Potter And the Deathly Hallows,' told the UK Telegraph, "Dan has appeared nude in the past. There are a couple of scenes in the new film in which he will undress, but we're still thinking about how we present it."
If the rumors were true it wouldn't be the first time Potter star
Danielle Radcliffe has gone au naturale for a role. The 20-year-old actor previously bared all in a stage version of 'Equus'.
While an au naturel scene may shock some parents it could be a good career move for Radcliffe, especially if he wants to break free of the constraints of Hogwarts. Plenty of accomplished and award-winning celebrities, among them Julianne Moore, Nicole Kidman and Patrick Wilson have built formidable careers by removing their clothes when the role demands it.
Julianne Moore first shed her clothes for Robert Altman's 'Short Cuts' in 1993. Later that year Moore, 48, steamed up the screen with Willem Dafoe in 'Body of Evidence.' She has also appeared nude in 'The End of the Affair,' 'The Big Lebowski,' and 'Savage Grace.' Moore said in an interview last year that she has no plans to rule out more nudity in the future.
"I try not to worry about it or think that there's any limit. But as for actually being comfortable in my own skin. I don't think anybody is...it's not possible to feel good about yourself at all times," the actress said.
Fellow red heads
Nicole Kidman and Susan Sarandon also seem to have no qualms about showing some skin for the sake of their art. Kidman, 42, first did a nude scene in 1989's 'Dead Calm,' and has since appeared nude or partially nude in 'Eyes Wide Shut,' 'Cold Mountain,' and 'Fur.' Sarandon, 63, has appeared nude in more than seven films.
"When a celebrity takes a role that requires nudity they aren't thinking about exhibitionism or attention so much as they are thinking if it is relevant to the role," explains psychologist and author of 'The Cult of Celebrity,' Cooper Lawrence. "As impulsive as we've seen celebrities be in their personal lives, when it comes to their career, it is usually a thought-out calculated choice to take or not take a role requiring nudity."

Like Radcliffe, Tony, Emmy and Golden Globe nominee Patrick Wilson appeared nude before an audience onstage in 2001's 'The Full Monty.' Wilson, 36, then took it all off when he portrayed a closeted gay Mormon in Tony Kushner's film version of 'Angels in America' in 2003.
The actor joked that his 2003 New Year's Resolution was to "be in a movie or a play, which doesn't require me to take off my clothes. Unless, of course, I don't get another job... In which case I'll be half-naked and whole-heartedly depressed for the rest of my career."
Wilson broke that resolution when he starred opposite
Kate Winslet in 2006's 'Little Children' and again in this year's 'Watchmen.' Winslet has also appeared in several nude roles including early-on in her career opposite Leonardo DiCaprio in 'Titanic' and in last year's Academy Award winning role in 'The Reader.'
The proof is in the pudding. Take it off Danny and you could just walk away with a little gold man one day.

Daniel does smoke the occasional roll-up cigarette, but he was not doing anything more than this. We are considering our position and will be taking all necessary action in relation to such allegations. (AP Photo/Richard Drew, file)

If you remember, at the beginning of this book there were multiple Harrys (polyjuice potion) to confuse the deatheaters during his escape. It seemed funny when they all changed into Potter clothes. This could be a very funny scene, if done tastefully.

If God meant for us to be naked, we'd be born nude. Oh, wait.....never mind.

People please there is a big difference between being nude on screen and porn. Harry is not having sex in this movie. He wakes realizes he doesn't have clothes on and then wishes for them. Have some faith in the actor and director there are ways for them to stay true to the book. They don't need to do a full frontal close-up for us to think he is nude. There are ways for him to appear to be nude without actually being so.

I'm trying to think of any part of the 7th book that calls for Harry to be naked and I can't think of any scene at all. I think they're going overboard with the "daniel get naked idea." And I'm grown so I think my opinion is objective enough.

Yes there is. When Harry is between death at King's Cross, he is naked.
Wow. Who in the world is thinking about Daniel Radcliffe nude in general more than him being nude in a HARRY POTTER movie!? Who gives a rip about what goes through an actor's mind when they "bare all." It's more troubling that a CHILDREN'S movie series has to have the lead take his freaking clothes off! How many 6,7,& 8 year olds are going to be sitting in the audience seeing "Harry" shed his cloak? Yeah, really classy, David Yates.

I have not read any of the book, I only no Harry through the movies (& pop culture), so to thoose wh have read the last book, is there a "nude Harry" scene? Do we also get a "nude Hermione" I hope?

It seems totally unnecessary to me too! I think my little nephews, 8 and 5, would be embarrassed by a nude scene. And it isn't because their parents are prudes - they're not - but they do teach their kids to keep nudity somewhat private, unlike when they were toddlers and could prance around the family naked. Heck - they're still young enough to be amused by potty humor, but they don't need to be exposed to nudity in a film when they are being taught about privacy. Sigh - you don't HAVE to "push the envelope" for art's sake every time.

There is a point in Deathly Hallows when Harry is nude... it's not gratuitous or anything. Hopefully it will be done tastefully in the movie. We don't need to see Harry's bits or anything. Ewww.

i'm a nudist and think everyone should go naked anytime they feel like it.
My hous is in the woods and the ups and fedex got over my being naked

First of all, the Harry Potter brand is marketed towards children so they better not be trying to figure out how to fit nudity into the fray! Second... someone PLEASE explain to me how or why a role could "demand it" - as in nudity? I've never felt myself questioning why a movie didn't contain any nudity or feel as if a movie was lacking because it didn't contain any nudity. Talk about poor logic and lame rationale!

in the scene in the book, he only stripped down in his underwear. thats probably how it will be in the movie.

I don't know what's with Daniel Radcliffe of late. I think the guy is an exhibitionist. I don;t think he is doing it for art's sake. The Equus role was bordering on pornography and just totally ruined the HP image. He could have at least waited till the series is over. He is growing, and he is no longer a boy, so there is a little bit of awkwardness and unease in seeing him with his hairy chest and pubic hair and his family jewels. The Harry Potter we know is pure and innocent and a boy, not a man. It's like he will be seducing the moms instead of making the little girls giggle.

You are absolutely right. The human body is beautiful, but that doesn't mean it needs to be shared with the world. It is to be held in high regard and not cheapened by exposing it. It's meant to be enjoyed with your spouse the way God intended. And saying something is done for the sake of "art" is just an excuse to get some shock value and attention to self.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion. I just wish everyone who is going to type theirs would learn to spell and use proper grammar. I don't see what is so difficult about to/too/two, there/their/they're and then/than.
