Kermit the Frog Talks Queen, Christmas

Kermit the Frog and his lovable gang of Muppets are popping up everywhere this holiday season. Starting this week, their cover of Queen's 'Bohemian Rhapsody' will be available on iTunes, and their special 'A Muppets Christmas: Letters to Santa' will air Dec. 19th on NBC. Our favorite amphibian took some time out of his busy schedule to chat with PopEater over email (for realzies!) about the Muppets viral YouTube video (watch it below!), his swampy plans for the holidays, and what to buy for the pig who has everything.

Whose idea was it for the Muppets to sing 'Bohemian Rhapsody'?
Well, y'see, we were having a video conference call and there was no hold music, so Gonzo started singing 'Bohemian Rhapsody'...and then some chickens joined in and it just kind of kept going from there. Since then, I've talked to members of the group Queen and surprisingly enough, that's pretty much how they came up with the song in the first place.

Do you ever surf YouTube?
Oh sure...a lot. It's amazing what you can find on those video sites. In fact, if I search my own name, it's kinda like watching my whole life pass before my eyes very slowly. I've got to stop using dial-up.

What are you giving Miss Piggy for Christmas?
Miss Piggy hasn't given me her list yet for this year, but that's okay, I'm still trying to finish up getting everything on her list from last year. I'll probably do what I usually do -- buy her breakfast....at Tiffany's. Ulp.

What do you want for Christmas?
I'm tough to shop for. You can't get me clothes 'cause I don't wear any. And earmuffs are no good, cause I don't have ears. But when you're a frog, you're pretty much happy with whatever you get -- as long as it's waterproof.

How does a frog stay warm over the Christmas season?
When you stand under mistletoe with Miss Piggy staying warm is the least of your problems.

Are you the star of 'A Muppets Christmas: Letters to Santa'?
Me? The star? Oh no. The special has so many great guest stars -- Whoopi Goldberg, Nathan Lane, Uma Thurman, Jane Krakowski, Madison Pettis, and Steve Schirripa and Tony Sirico from 'The Sopranos.' I'd never think of calling myself the star. It's an ensemble cast; that means, Miss Piggy and whoever else can squeeze into the shot.

Who is your favorite celebrity that you've worked with?
Oh, we've worked with so many big celebrities over the years, it wouldn't be fair to pick just one. What I've discovered is, when you take away the red carpet, the paparazzi, the bright lights and long limos, celebrities are just like you and me – only in my case they tend to be taller and slightly less green.

What are you doing for Christmas and New Years?
Well, sometimes I go back to the swamp for Christmas. But this year, the swamp is coming to me. Yup, I'll be entertaining 2,304 of my closest relatives over the holidays. They're really easy houseguests -- all I have to do is flood the basement and they're set. Then, we'll all get together -- the amphibious side of the family and my Muppet friends -- and go caroling, taking gifts to folks who might not get any...and of course playing that traditional seasonal game, 'Fruitcake, Fruitcake, Who Gets the Fruitcake'. That should be fun. As for the New Year, well the Muppets and I are supposed to go the Times Square in New York. It's crowded and bit scary (especially when you're only about 18 inches tall), but I love it. And it's a great place to meet and swap fruitcakes.

Which Muppet are you closest to?
Fozzie Bear. We're like brothers. (If bears and frogs can be brothers). He's always so upbeat and positive, even when he's getting heckled by those old guys in the balcony. He inspires me. And he makes me laugh -- even when his jokes aren't funny.

How are things between you and Miss Piggy?
Piggy and I are doing fine. You know how it is. Our relationship is the kind that changes from day to day. One day, we're happy and getting along, and the next, I'm in trouble for no apparent reason whatsoever. Does that ever happen to you?
