Twitter exploded in 2009 as celebrities invaded the social media blog to rant or babble mindlessly in 140 characters or less. Our favorite stars revealed way more personal information than we ever deemed necessary. Even so, Twitter made us feel like these stars were at our fingertips.
We witnessed Robert Pattinson's first tweet, saw Kanye West fall victim to a death hoax and even discovered Meghan McCain is BFFs with party girl Tila Tequila! It's been a crazy ride, so we're breaking down the year's biggest Twitter stories.
1. Just weeks after Kanye West stole the mic from Taylor Swift at the VMAs, 'RIP Kanye West' shot to Twitter's top trending topics. The elaborate hoax sent fans (and haters) into a spiral. But all rumors were put to rest though when his girlfriend Amber Rose reached out to fans on Twitter. "This 'RIP Kanye West' topic is not funny, and it's NOT TRUE! He has people like myself and his family that love him very much," she wrote.
2. Ashlee Simpson and Pete Wentz refused to sell their first picture of baby Bronx to any tabloid magazine. Instead, Simpson introduced the world to her first child via Twitter. "I present you my little man and his adorable cheeks!" she wrote. Adorable! (See the best TwitPics of 2009.)
3. Ashton Kutcher and Demi Moore might as well be called Mr. & Mrs. Twitter because they could have their own list of stories. Top moments: Ashton uploading a photo of Demi in her undies -- err, bathing suit. Or the fact that Moore used Twitter to save a woman from killing herself. Crazy stuff! But when Kutcher challenged CNN and its founder, Ted Turner to a contest to see who could attract 1 million followers on Twitter the fastest, everyone was watching. On April 17, Kutcher reached 1 million about 30 minutes before the news net passed the mark. Kutcher celebrated with a live webcast that included champagne, his wife Demi Moore and Kool & the Gang's hit 'Celebration.' Watch:
4. Courtney Love's Twitter had a mind of its own. The Hole rocker had strong opinions on everything from Madonna's mothering style to Victorian literature. But she got into a lot of trouble after she posted a series of defamatory tweets calling fashion designer Dawn Simorangkir a "nasty lying hosebag thief." The messages alleged that Simorangkir was a drug dealer, a racist, an unfit mother and a homophobe. It was shortly after that Love's account was deleted. We miss the craziness (and her absurd photos.)
5. "The wait is ova. Nov. 23 09." Without having to say much, Rihanna proved she was back, and fans could anticipate the release of her new album. Her scantily-clad album photos would follow shortly after. (Of course, we had a better time dissecting and mocking Adam Lambert's 'For Your Entertainment' and Chris Brown's 'Graffiti' covers.)
6. Actor Drew Carey is among many celebrities who used Twitter to give back -- in a big way! For every new follower Carey gets on Twitter, $1.00 will be donated to the LiveStrong Foundation, up to $1 million. Help the cause and follow @DrewFromTV.
7. Robert Pattinson wrote his first tweet on Peter Facinelli's Twitter. "Thanks a million. Here's Rob... Hi, it's Rob... My first and last tweet. My dad made me do it." Shortly after, Facinelli tweeted, "At least you know he doesn't have a Twitter account. Lol. Down with the posers."
9. Just when we thought we'd seen it all, we discovered Tila Tequila and Meghan McCain -- a racy, bisexual reality star and a former presidential candidate's daughter, respectively -- were BFFs. (Get the full story.) After exchanging a few messages on Twitter, the two scheduled a public meet up and the rest is history. Tila wrote on her Web page that McCain is "cool, smart" and is someone to "have intellectual convos" with. Tila even said that her political views often align with McCain's. Uh... ok.
10. A year of celebrity tweets lead us on quite a ride, and we even lost some good ones along the way. Celebrities like Chris Brown and Courtney Love have shut down their Twitters, but it was Miley Cyrus who seemed to start it all. She abruptly deleted her Twitter account in October stating she needed a break from cyberspace and said adios to her fans by rapping in a YouTube video. Watch:
