Miley Cyrus Is Not Your Mother

Miley Cyrus has been dogged by controversy for years, whether over a saucy Teen Choice Awards pole dance or an Annie Leibovitz photo shoot showing the young star clad in just a sheet. While Cyrus once told fans she was deeply embarrassed by the photos, a new interview in Harper's Bazaar shows that the 17-year-old singer/actress has stopped apologizing. The 'Hannah Montana' star tells an overcritical audience: "Your kids are going to make mistakes whether I do or not."

Cyrus suggests, "People like controversy because that's what sells. My job is to be a role model, and that's what I want to do, but my job isn't to be a parent. My job isn't to tell your kids how to act or how not to act, because I'm still figuring that out for myself. So to take that away from me is a bit selfish."

In 2008, after experiencing the backlash that followed Cyrus' undressed Vanity Fair cover, she issued a statement reading, "I took part in a photo shoot that was supposed to be 'artistic' and now, seeing the photographs and reading the story, I feel so embarrassed. I never intended for any of this to happen and I apologize to my fans who I care so deeply about."

In regard to that Leibovitz shoot, Cyrus now tells the magazine, "Here, my parents are thinking they're seeing a beautiful photograph by a major photographer, and the people of America want to see something dirty in that? It doesn't make sense to us because [my family] doesn't look for negativity ... No one wants to look at something like that and see the positive because it doesn't sell a magazine."

Cyrus spent the summer in Georgia, filming the Nicholas Sparks adaptation 'The Last Song,' and she says she relished the time spent away from the prying eyes of paparazzi. "It's so much easier to know who you are when there aren't a thousand people telling you who they think you are," she says. "I felt like I was really figuring myself out. Usually I have someone whispering in my ear, but I was on my own."

As for media attention on a 'Just Breathe' tattoo Cyrus recently adopted, the singer says the ink is a tribute to her two grandfathers who died of lung cancer and a close friend who passed away in 2007. "It reminds me not to take things for granted. I mean, breathing-that was something none of them could do, the most basic thing," she explains. "And I put it near my heart, because that is where they will always be."

She says, "I could never get a meaningless tattoo, but I think that if you're doing something that's important, that's significant in your life, it takes some of the pain away."

yeah im with you on that. i dont like miley but she should have a break u kno....shes a teen. teens wanna have fun like meeeee. this is why teen celebs have to watch out. one false move, your younger viewers will be drivin away by your parents saying their bad influences

What about Mickey Mouse, is he ok?, because let me tell you he has done some really wild stuff. anyway Hannah Montana is she ok? how do you feel about the kid who plays her brother he is like 30 years old in real life, is that ok? I for one would not be happy if my children decided that Donald Duck should be their role Model. Really if you are that lazy of a parent that you let the Disney Chanel raise your children, than Miley is the last thing you should worry about.

Hmmm, I wonder why then it was necessary for her to be partially bare in order to achieve a "beautiful picture." Other people's kids would certainly make mistakes if Cyrus didn't even exist, but the real point is, Cyrus makes hers in order to keep her name in the news, and she justifies and explains them with the senseless double-talk she is fed by her publicists, who rightly assume her audience consists of morons.

Actually, if you see a far-away shot of the the ensemble she was wearing for the photo shoot, she was wearing a pair of jeans and the "sheet" looked like a button-up shirt artistically draped at the top so it resembled a sheet in the photograph. She showed her shoulders, that's it.

My reply: Your post ONLY makes sense if it was the ONLY photo done for the magazine for the photoshoot. It wasn't, it was one of MANY done. That and perhaps they were going for a "beautiful picture" and her being "partially bare" is just incidental, ever consider that? You ASSUME that she was thinking "I must be partially bare to have a beautiful picture" and then act as if that assumption is the truth. Oh well, I guess it just proves your post doesn't make much sense after all.

Good for Miley!! I am the mother of two kids who grew up with Hannah Montana and they were aware she was an actress, playing a character, and that their life choices should not mirror hers! Parents, get a grip! If you actually took the time to raise your kids correctly, it wouldn't matter if their grandparents dropped drugs.....they will make good choices...and a few big mistakes along the way! I think Miley is a great kid, photos and all.....let her live her life!

i'd forgiven billy ray cyrus some years ago for 'achy breaky heart', but i will NEVER forgive him for spawning this no-talent brat, who doesn't possess an ounce of talent.

I couldnt agree more! It wreaks of jealousy. Miley is a teenager trying to grow up. And all the true white trash out there bashes her for being successful and still being "country". Maybe thats it? Maybe the jealousy stems from their failure to remain "country" and make anything useful of themselves.

Diana you go girl! Laricee, you may think she has no talent, and that's okay, but thankfully the rest of world has spoken and you are in the bottom 1%!
