Howard Stern: Artie Lange Suicide Attempt 'Was Too Much to Bear'

'Howard Stern Show' Artie Lange landed in the hospital after stabbing himself nine times in an apparent suicide attempt, sources told The Post. Though shock jock Stern vowed to keep quiet about Lange's condition during his Sirius Satellite Radio show Monday, he lifted the ban Thursday night.

"I would love to know who the scumbag is who releases that to the press, because this is a private matter," Stern said. "I don't know what to say. I work with Artie, I love Artie. Everyone has their demons, including myself, but he's wrestling with some serious stuff ... When I heard the news it was too much to bear."

Lange's frantic mom called 911 Saturday morning after she entered his Hoboken apartment and found the bloodied funnyman, a law enforcement source said. Lange sustained six "hesitation wounds" and three deep plunges. A source close to Lange's management team confirmed that Howard Stern's sidekick stabbed himself. Surgeons managed to save Lange.

After seeing extensive coverage of Lange's condition, Stern commented, "I thought we were out of the woods with that and it wouldn't come out. I was surprised and glad that Artie's situation had been kept quiet ... I'm angry about it, I'm sad about it. I don't know what to think. I'm all over the place emotionally."

He added, "I'm p-ed off the story got out there, p-ed off at the s--thead who got paid 10 bucks to talk to Page Six ...This is a family matter. I don't know what to do. I don't know what to say."

Lange has had a history of substance abuse issues, including when he checked himself into a rehab clinic in late 2008. In 2009, Lange was busted for DUI (prescription sleeping pills) after crashing his car into Toms River in July.

Regarding Lange's addictions, Stern said, "I've always tried to maintain my loyalty to Artie, and at times it's very trying, because Artie has had some tough times and people would even come to me and say, 'Its not fair, he's not showing up for work.' It's because of his great talent and my affection for him that I would [accept that] -- he had a real problem."

I'm amazed Howard has any feelings at all, he's the first to slam anyone who has a problem or castrate them on national radio/television when it benefits himself. How does it feel Howard(who has no respect for anyone elses privacy) when the shoe is on the other foot and it's someone you care about!

Wow, Howard Stern is finally getting a taste of his own medicine. How does it feel? He makes fun of and exploits other peoples personal tragedies all the time! even when deaths involved. It's sad for Arties family but I have no sympathy for Artie or Howard Stern.

Howard howard,, the only full grown 'man' that I have witnessed squirming in his chair, because a woman with out a shirt was on his radio show. I never watched him again. It was a pathetic display on his part. As if he was 14 years old. I wondered then, who watches this guy. That was many years ago. now here he is, and people still jump to hear him? I dont get it, I never got it, I never will get it. Howard is nothing more than a user of people. This Arite guy must have been hurting badly for years. now howard wants to get pi*** because the story 'leaked', howard probably leaked it himself for ratings. Howard has had many people listening to him for him to still be here. It seems lots of children like this guy, for what I will never understand. Hes nothing more than huge punk, that is very immature for his age. Enjoy him kids.

I know it's a small point given the enormity of this suicide attempt, but I wish that blogs like this would at least try to get facts straight.
I'm referring to the reference to Artie's car crash in 2009. Here's the sentence:
"In 2009, Lange was busted for DUI (prescription sleeping pills) after crashing his car into Toms River in July."

He crashed his car IN Tom's River (a city in NJ). And it was a fender bender. That's a big distinction than crashing into a river.
Please try and be a LITTLE responsible with your reporting. The guy's having enough problems as it is.
