Howard Stern: Artie Lange Suicide Attempt 'Was Too Much to Bear'

'Howard Stern Show' Artie Lange landed in the hospital after stabbing himself nine times in an apparent suicide attempt, sources told The Post. Though shock jock Stern vowed to keep quiet about Lange's condition during his Sirius Satellite Radio show Monday, he lifted the ban Thursday night.

"I would love to know who the scumbag is who releases that to the press, because this is a private matter," Stern said. "I don't know what to say. I work with Artie, I love Artie. Everyone has their demons, including myself, but he's wrestling with some serious stuff ... When I heard the news it was too much to bear."

Lange's frantic mom called 911 Saturday morning after she entered his Hoboken apartment and found the bloodied funnyman, a law enforcement source said. Lange sustained six "hesitation wounds" and three deep plunges. A source close to Lange's management team confirmed that Howard Stern's sidekick stabbed himself. Surgeons managed to save Lange.

After seeing extensive coverage of Lange's condition, Stern commented, "I thought we were out of the woods with that and it wouldn't come out. I was surprised and glad that Artie's situation had been kept quiet ... I'm angry about it, I'm sad about it. I don't know what to think. I'm all over the place emotionally."

He added, "I'm p-ed off the story got out there, p-ed off at the s--thead who got paid 10 bucks to talk to Page Six ...This is a family matter. I don't know what to do. I don't know what to say."

Lange has had a history of substance abuse issues, including when he checked himself into a rehab clinic in late 2008. In 2009, Lange was busted for DUI (prescription sleeping pills) after crashing his car into Toms River in July.

Regarding Lange's addictions, Stern said, "I've always tried to maintain my loyalty to Artie, and at times it's very trying, because Artie has had some tough times and people would even come to me and say, 'Its not fair, he's not showing up for work.' It's because of his great talent and my affection for him that I would [accept that] -- he had a real problem."

How tragic, after spending a weekend with Artie in August, we all thought he was recovering well.
It's now time for 24/7 care, and with the right kind of people.
Needless to say, I wish Artie and his family the very best.

Stern would have goofed on this if it was anyone besides his untalented friend. The show has not been funny for more then a decade becasue of a lack of effort and after all Stren's battles with the FSC - at the end of the day the FSC won because Howard is off the public airwaves and only broadcasting to a few fools stupid enough to pay for radio. They should all just dry up and blow away.

Idiots unite.
What you dont know is that Howard rags on the self-righteous and pompous celebs and the hippocrites like the religious right. He is a very giving guy, but does it in private.
I know Howard is devastated by Arties condition. Robin and Howard have numerous times begged Artie to get help to no avail. Unfortunately, Artie is self loathing and destructive. A shame for such a talent.

Yeah I'm not surprised that Howard is pissed about that of course that's Howard for you. If you ever listened to his show he's going to react to things honestly and of course he's actually going to give a sh*t about his friend and be upset about it.
I really hope Artie finds peace and this really affected me not just as a fan but as someone who knows what its like to only be happy when on a substance and hating yourself for it so much that you do look at a knife and think about stabbing yourself in the heart. Artie I'm sure you're not reading this but I feel ya man. And I'm glad you failed at this attempt because you would be missed and I hope that you find peace somehow. Who are the writers of these stories and who is the proofreaders ? Artie Lange's suicide attempt is a call for help. Howard Stern, you keep allowing him to get away with so much stuff, what kind of friend are you ? Why aren't you putting your foot down, giving him some tough love, and trying to get help for him. Now thats a true friend! Allowing his behavior is not being a true friend, helping him get help is a true friend. Artie obviously needs help more than he needs your friendship Howard. Step it up and show us how much you value him as a humanbeing. Get tough with him and maybe then you will be helping to save his life. Dope !~

It's so easy to criticize others, but at the same time, with all the hardships many of us are going through, it really is dificult to feel sorry for someone that has so much going for him, and is so unable to manage to control his mental state of health.
I would find it impossible to give a damn about Artie, and his "woe is me" spoiled attitude and willingness to throw it all away, if it wasn't for the fact that I see the same issues in a very close friend.
They are not the same happy person I used to know. They are not themselves anymore, not the real inner selves they used to be.
The loved ones around you feel helpless to help you. What is this poison that seeps into a person's soul, and robs us of the ones we love so much?
Mental illness sucks...
But hey, whatta ya gonna do?

How can Howard get upset about people revealing personal family matters about Artie when Howard, himself, revealed personal information about his first wife after she asked him not to? Howard must feel more for Artie than his own first wife. I stopped listening to Howard after he betrayed his first wife's wishes. Howard is a hypocrite.

I am a fan of Howard Stern, but he is being such a loser and a hypocrite about all of this. if it was anyone else in the world he would be laughing about it on the air and writing parody songs. Did Howard think that Letterman, Tiger, Bill Clinton, Rush, and their issues were all private matters? He was the s_head who was having a field day with it. Anyway, Lange is a fat drug addled racist and homophobe. I hope he gets well, but not back on the air anywhere.
