Howard Stern: Artie Lange Suicide Attempt 'Was Too Much to Bear'

'
Howard Stern Show'
Artie Lange landed in the hospital after stabbing himself nine times in an apparent suicide attempt, sources told
The Post. Though shock jock Stern vowed to keep quiet about Lange's condition during his Sirius Satellite Radio show Monday, he lifted the ban Thursday night.
"I would love to know who the scumbag is who releases that to the press, because this is a private matter," Stern said. "I don't know what to say. I work with Artie, I love Artie. Everyone has their demons, including myself, but he's wrestling with some serious stuff ... When I heard the news it was too much to bear."
Lange's frantic mom called 911 Saturday morning after she entered his Hoboken apartment and found the bloodied funnyman, a law enforcement source said. Lange sustained six "hesitation wounds" and three deep plunges. A source close to Lange's management team confirmed that Howard Stern's sidekick stabbed himself. Surgeons managed to save Lange.
After seeing extensive coverage of Lange's condition, Stern commented, "I thought we were out of the woods with that and it wouldn't come out. I was surprised and glad that Artie's situation had been kept quiet ... I'm angry about it, I'm sad about it. I don't know what to think. I'm all over the place emotionally."
He added, "I'm p-ed off the story got out there, p-ed off at the s--thead who got paid 10 bucks to talk to Page Six ...This is a family matter. I don't know what to do. I don't know what to say."
Lange has had a history of substance abuse issues, including when he checked himself into a rehab clinic in late 2008. In 2009, Lange was busted for DUI (prescription sleeping pills) after crashing his car into Toms River in July.
Regarding Lange's addictions, Stern said, "I've always tried to maintain my loyalty to Artie, and at times it's very trying, because Artie has had some tough times and people would even come to me and say, 'Its not fair, he's not showing up for work.' It's because of his great talent and my affection for him that I would [accept that] -- he had a real problem."

I'm very proud of your loyalty Howard. I really didn't know you were capable of such depth, and I'm sorry I judged you without even knowing you. Like you said we all have our demons to fight and Artie Lange is lucky to have you by his side. May both of you have good luck now and in the future. And with friends like you Artie will make it, he just has to believe that himself.

So Howard was named after the front of a boat? Or is it the rear, I'm not sure?

The Bow is the front of the ship.
The Stern is the back of the ship.

I seriously don't think anyone would find this funny...not howard...not anyone...be serious....it was very tragic.

What a hypocrite! If it were someone else in the media he'd be ALL over it! And, the sad thing is, he'd be MAKING LIGHT OF IT! I wouldn't be surprised at ALL if 'Howie' was the one that leaked it to the media. I'm just sayin....

Having listened to Howard Stern back in the day, I don't think the Howard Stern Show is where Artie Lange should be working. To me it's not an environment that would support someone like Artie who probably suffers from long time depression and is in need of professional support. Being someone who suffers from depresssion, my heart goes out to Artie cause I can understand the pain he must have experienced to feel that suicide was his only option. God Bless you Artie.

I've listened since the "WNNNNBC" days and there's no doubt that Howard's a hypocrite. However, he'd admit it, saying "Yeah, so what?" if called on it. That doesn't make it OK, but it might account for how Howard manages to keep ahead of some of his detractors and retain his audience. Truthfully, he has always been "funny as long as someone else is his target." It's surprising that it's taken nearly 30 years for this to happen to someone in the Stern crew. The guy has mocked and ridiculed illnesses, addictions and deaths of others - with no limits or lines he would not cross - for decades. There is no reasonable defense for the contradiction between his resentment toward others either reporting or trashing Artie and his treatment of others over the years. Looking at the way Artie has lived his life and let it be public (including the way Howard has enjoyed the turmoil as long as it was "good radio"), it's a wonder he didn't do this - successfully - sooner. It could be that Artie's mother - being the one good and unselfish influence in his life - gave him enough real love and concern to keep him going this long. If he wants a shot at life, he'll have to get away from Howard and earn it peacefully and quietly.
Anyway, the show took a dive when Howard embarrassed Billy West enough to get West to quit. It was never as good after West left, and Howard has said enough over the years since then to indicate he knows it (including references to possible reconciliation with West).Good luck to Artie - at the end of the day, he has to do the haed work to straighten his life out. The enabling and using influences upon which he has been leaning are obstacles he has to get out of the way if he is to have any chance.

How can you crash your car into Toms River??? Toms River is a city. I love how stories are rushed to print that a large number of "writers" post with typos. It's terrible. Thank you and all of the others for making half-arsed work acceptable. Way to teach the kids.
