It's amazing . I approached adoption agencies about adopting from China I'm married age 52 and married to a Chinese born man. I was told that you couldn't adopt, due to my age anyone over 50 only special needs. MMMMM
Does money talk?

Exactly, BD! I, too, was told NO-ONE over 50 would even be considered for ANY overseas adoptions, in ANY country in the world... Yet Jean Smart, at nearly 60, gets to??? Hmmmm.... I'm actually very glad for her, but I do think that it was HER MONEY that did all the talking, because they sure turn down everyone else that old, and a lot younger, too! My friend is only 49, but because the process usually takes SO long, usually months, if not years, they turned her down in 6 countries, saying that she'd be over 50 when it was all said and done, and they will NOT do adoptions with the over-50 crowd... But Jean Smart, at nearly 60, gets to? Again, I really DO think it's all about whoever has the money, they can do whatever they want... (And I'm not talking about the under-50's who have adopted from foreign countries -- one of my best friends adopted 2 from Korea over the course of 3 years, and 1 from Texas, which took 8 years)... MONEY TALKS if you're over the age limit, apparently. Also, where's the outrage? A couple of years ago, everyone gave that woman from England SO much crap for having a child at age 61, but Jean Smart is only 2.5 years younger, yet SHE has an infant now? Where's the outrage now? Oh that's right, she's rich, so she gets whatever she wants, with no grief thrown her way... I am happy for her, I just wish people wouldn't be so mean to "average" people who do the very same thing...
Thank God she did not adopt one of those fility little American babies, there is no style points for that. This is so very cool and she can be cool and get headlines and then hire a Mexican nanny to raise the child for her. Thank God America has this woman and Madonna and Angelina to adopt babies from around the world to show the world that entertainers are just way beyond being an American. Now which dummy will line up to pay into their multi millionaire lifestyle with their next media project? I can't wait I think I will send them money now.

WOW you are so right! I am sick and tired of Celebs in the news adopting babies around the world. SO many kids right here need a good home. Everyday you hear about a poor child abused or hungry. I say Buy American!
I am in my 50's and my parents adopted me and two other children. I have two biological children and an adopted daughter. When I went to adopt I was told that the waiting to adopt an american baby would be years - blame legalized abortion if you must. I adopted my daughter from Korea and she is now the mother of a beautiful daughter herself. When a person has the need to add to their family, they must go the route that is available. Don't judge until you have all the facts. Thank you.
Wow Tom! It is so great that you know EVERYTHING there is to know about adoption! What gives you this amazing insight? Go deal with your own life and stop begrudging others who happen to have money and adopt babies from other countries. You have NO CLUE what went into this decision for this family. Go puke out your hate on pedophiles or people who abandon their babies...NOT PEOPLE WHO ADOPT. Fool!
Exactly where do you find these "American babies"? We had our name on lists for years and ended up getting two babies through Korea. It's easy to make statements you know nothing about.
Amen
The other posters are right - it is extremely difficult, if at all possible, to adopt an infant or small child domestically. THAT is why so many adopt internationally, or turn to 3rd party (donor egg/sperm, surrogates, etc) reproduction. How about a New Year's resolution of not being so judgemental, especially when you obviously have no idea what it's like to want a child and not be able to have/adopt one.
Thank you for telling it like it is! One thing you forgot to add: There are plenty American children for adoption if you are willing to adopt an older child and not a baby. Also there are plenty of children available that aren't blond and blue-eyed. It is always so curious to me that these celebs will adopt Chinese,Korean,African and Indonisian babies from other countries, but GOD FORBID they would adopt a child of color from the good old USA!
All these post about how hard it is to get American babies and yet I know 2 young families who adoped infant boys right here in the USA.
I understand why you think that, but a child is a child. Have you ever seen an orphanage in China!? MUCH worse than the US. I'm not saying that people shouldn't look to children here first. It costs much more to adopt a baby from overseas, so I think if someone who has the money can they should. She saved a child's life, shouldn't that be celebrated instead of judged because she didn't do it the way you would have!?
Not sure Tom, but I think it may have something to do with liberal US judges tearing adopted children from the arms of adoptive parents after years of living with them, because an 18 year old biological mom lied about the father. Also, a majority of potential US adopotees are minorities and the minority parents (who don't want to adopt the kids themselves) resent those minority kids being raised by "whites." Who cares who she adopted - she gave a homeless child a home which is more than you can say. Get a life.

you know why it's so hard to adopt in the u.s.?... because in the u.s. the birth parents can petition go get the baby back if they have a change of heart.. they can drag the adoptive parents thru the court system for years and end up with the baby back and hearts broken. people are gun-shy of adopting here because of the very real chance of losing the baby. or because the adoption process pushes for open adoptions... in many cases the birth parents are unfit to BE parents. .and yet they can still push for an open adoption so they are still in the babie's lfe. by going overseas, the adoptive parents pretty much have the peace of mind that they will get to keep the baby and not have the birth parents breathing down their necks.
Your ignorance is showing!! It is obvious that you have never thought of adopting or you would know that there are few "American" babies available. Since abortion and unwed mothers have been made acceptable there are fewer and fewer babies out there. There are kids in foster care, BUT the courts don't cut parental rights and allow them to be adopted as they think that the families need to be kept intact. I know as we tried for years and then chose to adopt an Asian child. I would suggest that before you spew your poison you try to adopt as "American" baby and find out. No, on second thought, you would not be a good adoptive parent with your attitude and I doubt that you would last thru the first round of approvals that are needed.
Unfortunately, the US goes out of its way to make it difficult and expensive to adopt here. We have 2 children from Russia, which came as a result of 2 botched adoptions here. One child was refused to us from the birth mother after she had the child. We paid for all of her medical care (decided in our agreement), but when she had the baby, she changed her mind. According to US law, the mother does not have to reimburse if she changes her mind. Our second attempt informed us that if we wanted to adopt a teenager, we could get the child immediately, but a baby (without special needs) would take years and cost double what it would cost for international adoption. As materialistic as it sounds, we just wanted children, but we are middle-class, working parents, and we couldn't afford to adopt an American child. I think this should bring to light the trouble of adoptions within the United States. Yes, we have many needy children, but it's almost as if we go out of our way (as a country) to keep it that way. Congratulations to Ms. Smart and her husband...I find it difficult to be critical of any act of kindness. I'm sure Bonnie won't care that the Gillilands adopted internationally!
Wow, it just goes tos how you what money can do. China is very strict on it's age limits, which is 50 years old max and has been lowered in recent years. She obviously pulled some strings. I was going to adopt a few years ago as a single woman, but China stopped adopting to single women and I was SOL.I guess if I'd had the right bank account, it wouldn't have mattered.

Wondered about this myself - thought the age limit was much lower than theirs.
China did not stop letting single people adopt babies. I have a friend who is single and is on her way next week to adopt a little girl. She ran into all kinds of roadblocks here in the U.S. (being single) and opted to go to China instead. It's taken 4 years, but her baby girl will be here in a couple of weeks.
