George Clooney at Podium: 'I Am Like Mariah Carey [Messed] Up Right Now'

In one evening, George Clooney made the case for being Hollywood's best star to both present and give acceptance speeches. While setting up an award for his 'Fantastic Mr. Fox' director Wes Anderson at the New York Film Critics Circle Awards on Monday, Clooney opened up with a topical doozy. "I am like Mariah Carey f----d up right now," referring to the singer's tipsy behavior at an awards in Florida last week.

Later, when he accepted an award for best actor for 'Mr. Fox,' Clooney made a vow to New York Observer critic Rex Reed, who has a tendency to dislike the actor's work: "I want you to know, Rex: I will not sleep, I will not rest, I will not sleep at my home, or at my villa in Italy -- Lake Como, Italy. I will not sleep in my villa in Lake Como, Italy until you're happy."

He then got serious and spoke to directly to the journalists in the crowd. "I'm the son of a newsman. My father wrote for a paper for 20 years. It's a very difficult, tricky time for most of you in this room right now, as you well know, not because of the economy necessarily but because of all the other issues. I still like to read the newspaper. I wish you all the best of luck. I'm a fan of what you do, and I hope you continue to get to do it. And I thank you very much."

Clooney is up for a Golden Globe award this Sunday, for his leading role in 'Up in the Air.' Here's hoping he gets to make a speech that night.

An honorable observation! i have family in the newpaper business for 55 years they are barely surviving .. this has a full cycle issue because the papers need to raise prices to stay in business and joe public cannot afford it .. unintended consequences ..

George Clooney is a toolbar. He loves to make fun of other people and could he mention his Italian Villa just one more time? I will say this tho. He has Hollywood eating out of his hand. He should go into politics. He has all the right moves and knows exactly when to play the humility card. I can't believe so many people buy into it.
