Does Jay Leno Deserve All This Late-Night Backlash?
By Mike Ryan Posted Jan 13th 2010 04:20PM
PopEater certainly got a fair share of opinionated comments and emails when we threw our weight behind Team Conan O'Brien in this whole NBC debacle. Because we're fair and always willing to lend an ear to what our readers think, we decided to view things from Jay Leno's perspective. Does he really deserve all this backlash he's currently getting, ours included? In the current late-night TV power struggle, it's a pretty easy task to defend O'Brien -- and rightfully so. There's no question that Conan's getting royally screwed. But, for a moment, clear your head of the anger and sympathy you're feeling toward O'Brien. Remember, in his statement yesterday addressed to the people of Earth (that includes you!), he specifically said, "No one should waste a second feeling sorry for me." So with that, let's step into Leno's shoes and explore why maybe he shouldn't be getting the brunt of the backlash ... after the jump.

Picture this: You're sitting in your office at work, and you're feeling on top of the world. Your production is bringing in by far the most money for the company, hands down. Sure, you're not winning any awards for business creativity, but what's an award mean anyway when you're winning the bottom line? In other words: You're the alpha dog and everyone knows it. One day your boss walks in your office. He tells you he appreciates the job you're doing -- no question, you bring in the most money and eyeballs -- but, sadly, he has to let you go because there's a younger guy that wants your job, and they're afraid to lose him. The younger guy is great at what he does but has no proven track record doing your job. Regardless, you're told that in five years he's getting your position and to not let the door hit you in the a** on the way out. This is what it was like to be Jay Leno in 2004.
Now, instead of sulking, or, even more impressive, not just outright tanking the job, therefore sabotaging the position for his younger, more hip replacement ... Leno excels. He brings in around 5.7 million viewers a night (compared with his eventual replacement O'Brien's roughly 2.9 million viewers). The five years go quickly but, it was agreed upon, even though his rating are the best, he's still losing his job. How is that at all fair to Leno? All he did was host the highest-rated late night talk show and, for his efforts, he was let go. And he hands the show over while still on top. But wait! The NBC executives woke up at the last minute. What if Leno goes to another network and dominates there, too? So, they offer him a 10 p.m. variety show in order to avoid that scenario. This is like, paraphrasing our previous scenario, a top dog sausage employee being given a new job, but instead of in bratwurst-craving Milwaukee, the new position makes him relocate to San Francisco -- one of the healthiest cities in America. There is no way he can match his prior production thanks to different demand. Not only that, his lack of production directly affects his replacement back in Milwaukee, which is bringing the entire company down. It was a no-win situation for everyone involved. Yes, it's the Kobayashi Maru -- and Leno is no James T. Kirk.
From most accounts (i.e. people not named Conan O'Brien or David Letterman) Jay Leno is a pretty nice guy. And, yes, the man completely dumbed down his comedy for the sake of ratings -- no question. But can you look at yourself in the mirror and honestly say that you've never compromised -- even a little bit -- for the sake of your job? Even Letterman and Conan dumbed down their respective shows when they moved to an earlier time slot, just not to the extent that Leno did. In the end, who got the highest ratings? Leno.
There are a lot of rumblings that Leno is behind the scenes of this NBC debacle, pulling the strings like a master puppeteer in order to get his old job back; fair enough, he's done this before in the early 1990s. But, really, that was his former manager Helen Kushnick's doing, who he fired shortly after that debacle. It's hard not to think Leno learned his lesson from that experience. And now we're hearing that Leno might leave NBC, too. Is this posturing? Maybe. But let's assume for a second that he is behind the scenes pulling the strings. Well, what would you be doing right now? That was your show and you loved it. You never wanted to leave, you had the highest ratings and you were forced out by a guy that is now losing to a competitor (Letterman) that you used to mop the floor with. And now YOU'RE the one taking a beating in the press? How is this fair? In your mind, that show is still rightfully yours. You wouldn't at least put up a little bit of a fight for it? Really, it's hard to blame him for having an eff you, I told you so attitude.
No one is ever going to confuse Leno's brand of comedy with anything even bordering on highbrow and he's never going to be the media darling, but, it's undeniable that he pulled in the ratings and, when at 'The Tonight Show,' kept the affiliates happy -- something Conan was not doing and Letterman, when at NBC, didn't care about. He dumbed his show down to reach the wider audience; which, ironically, as the ratings proved, was the smart move. Leno played the game. Leno was winning the game. Who can really blame him for wanting to collect his prize?

I definitely see both sides and I feel bad for both of these guys. It seems they both got screwed, in plain English. What to do about it, I just don't know. They will do what they want anyway.

I also feel for both of them and feel they both got the shaft from the network, one 5 years ago and one now, and neither deserve it or deserve to be pitted against a friend.
I feel for both of them as well. I wish both would simply leave NBC--it doesn't deserve them.
Why would Jay deserve any of this? He didn't want to leave the Tonight Show in the First Place- NBC had already sold the show out from under him for Conan- not Conanwants to play all noble about not wanting to damage the morst important franchise in TV history- well he's as much at fault as anyone.

What was Conan supposed to do? Say "no, I don't want it"?
You are so right. Jay got screwed by NBC. If Conan threatened to leave they should have let him go. He simply isn't right for the Tonight Show, he and his jokes are so immature it just isn't funny. He belongs in the later time slot to amuse the college kids.
Johnny Carson I'm sure is rolling in his grave seeing what his happening to the show he nurtured for 30 years. Frankly Conan isn't the only one who should leave NBC...
The so called know it alls in high places should all join the unemployment line. Face it they are the ones who decide what is on NBC, they are the ones who caved to Conan, in short they are the ones to blame for the fall of the network, not Jay.
How is Conan at fault?
Jay Leno's Mom is so black...her glow in the dark panties burn out after 3 days. Seriously...
It's not Jays fault. I'm not a fan, but leave the damn guy alone.
It's the network people, they are just as stupid as radio people.

With jokes like that you must be a Leno fan. FAIL!
Jay's show was canceled like all the others they choose to cancel, so why should they save him. They don't care about any of the other good shows they cancel that people enjoy watching just because they choose too. Conan should keep the tonight show, why should he pay for the networks bad judgement

As much as I like Conan, he is the most to blame for his current situation. He was the one who initially threatened to bolt NBC if he wasn't "awarded" the Tonight Show helm. Is it Jay Leno's fault that Conan just wasn't up to the job? Put Jay back where he belongs and show Conan the door!

right on... I quit watching the tonight show when the "dork" took over
To be honest without being rude, I haven't watched Conan'a late night, I try and watch Jay's show when I remember and I am beginning to remember now @10:00pm and watch Anderson 360 and Larry @ 11:00pm & 12:00 am. Unfortunately Conan is like the court jester I love Jay Leno
I agree with you, why should Jay be taking all the heat, when
he preformed his job and brought in the ratings. Conan made the threat and he couldn't bring in the results, in real life that is when you get fired. As for Dave Letterman, when is he going to move on and get over his anger over Jay getting the tonight show? He looks like a poor sport and a loser.
You are so right! How does a network make a deal 5 years ago with a guy (Conan) who walks in the door & demands Jay's job in 5 years? What nerve! Turns out Conan never had the ratings to even merit consideration.
I just want somebody who doesn't look like a walking corpse! I can't even stand to look at Conan's pasty white Irish skin!!!
You are absolutely right!!! It was Conan O'Brien who said he was going to walk if he didn't get what he wanted and at the time he wanted the Tonight Show. So to keep him they gave it to him and told Jay he was out. Jay worked without showing any bitterness for 5 years and graciously handed over his show to Conan. It is NBC's fault for promising a hit show to a guy who had no track record for such and it is absolutely not Jay Leno's fault if Conan couldn't keep the audience Jay had. I have never seen what people see in Conan, but watched the show for a few nights after he took over. Haven't watched it since. Didn't like the direction the show took - and DONT think he is funny at all.
It's not all Conan's fault. If he threatened the executives with
quitting if he didn't get the show, then guess what? They could have
said, "No."
What do you mean he wasn't up to the job? I think he was plenty up
for the job. I just think he has a different sense of humor than Jay
does.
Hey Chuck,
Conan was just going to leave after his contract was up. NBC wanted him to stay and promised him the Tonight Show. They could have let him leave and kept Leno on the Tonight Show. THEY wanted Conan to do it. The easiest and noblest thing to do would be to cut Leno and let him do other things. They both can but HE agreed to "retire" from Tonight. He agreed! Read up on it.
Yeah, but Bill Carter's book The Late Shift talked about how Leno's people pressured Johnny Carson to retire so Leno could get Tonight. So, I'm OK with the same thing happening to Leno.
