Late-Night Hosts Gang Up to Pummel NBC
If NBC was hoping to brush the whole Conan/Leno debacle under the table, they should get ready for a long, hard ride if last night's late-night assault on the Peacock network was any indication. Conan reamed NBC for essentially pushing him out, Jay alluded to it but mostly avoided Conan's situation, and other network hosts chimed in as well.
After the jump, a breakdown of all the 'Tonight'-gate commentary on Tuesday.
Conan's Colossal Day
Hours after releasing a statement saying that he had no interest in manning 'The Tonight Show' if it was bumped to 12:05 am -- marking perhaps the biggest middle-finger letter from employer to boss we've ever seen -- Conan didn't hold back during his Tuesday monologue. He joked: "I've been giving the situation a lot of thought. When I was a little boy, I remember watching 'The Tonight Show' with Johnny Carson and thinking 'One day, I'm going to host that show for seven months.'"
Perhaps the biggest NBC barb was when Conan said of the current situation: "NBC said they were planning on having the late-night situation figured out before the Olympics start. And let me tell you something, when NBC says something, you can take that to the bank."
As the one that many are considering the person who was the most royally screwed during this whole ordeal, Conan fans had reason to celebrate. He ripped the network that is pushing him out while still showing a good deal of tact and classiness for not totally freaking out.
Jay Jokes, But Ignores Conan
Aside from a joke or two about the overall hairiness of the situation he's at the epicenter of, Leno stopped short of directly addressing Conan's statement released earlier on Tuesday. Instead, he focused on smaller barbs towards NBC, saying: "The folks here at NBC, they don't handle these things well. They don't have a lot of tact. After they canceled the show, they told me if I gained 10 pounds I could join 'The Biggest Loser.'"
Perhaps in job preservation mode at this point (PopEater's Rob Shuter
reports Leno may be out at NBC as well), Leno avoided any him-versus-Conan taunts.
Dave Doesn't Hold Back
David Letterman has never been one to bite his tongue. By far the most ornery late-night host, the NBC mess is a dream come true for Letterman, who still has an axe to grind with his former network and Leno himself.
"You know what this means -- that's right, I knocked off another competitor," he joked in his monologue, referring to Conan O'Brien's decision Tuesday to leave NBC if they move 'The Tonight Show' to 12:05 a.m. Letterman repeatedly referred to his old and soon-to-be current foe as Jay "Big Jaw" Leno and mocked the "geniuses" at NBC programming who devised his move to prime-time.
Kimmel Gets in Leno's Shoes ... Literally
Over at ABC, consummate prankster and impersonator Jimmy Kimmel used the 'Tonight' firestorm to bust out his fantastic Jay Leno impersonation, complete with prop chin (naturally).
Kimmel, as Leno, said in his monologue: "Hello, hello, my name is Jay Leno and let it here by be known that I'm taking over all the shows in late-night," he quipped, referring to the recent dustup at NBC. He went on to joke that "It's great to be here on ABC," he adds. "You know what ABC stands for? Always Bump Conan."
Another shot was lobbed directly at Leno with the joke: "Conan O'Brien, today, announced that he is leaving NBC. He released a statement today saying 'I won't participate in the destruction of 'The Tonight Show.'" Fortunately, though, I will," Kimmell says.
Fallon Forgets to Talk About It
A somber looking Jimmy Fallon dodged getting involved in 'Tonight'-gate entirely, as his place at NBC following all of this drama is still unknown. His first two jokes were about Sarah Palin and 'Jersey Shore,' skating around the 800 pound elephant in the NBC offices.
With Conan likely out, there's no word where Fallon -- whose current show begins at 12:35 a.m. after Conan's 'Tonight show' -- will land. Whether it was a conscious decision by Fallon to stay out of it or network executives told him to back off is unknown, but one thing is for sure -- there was certainly some strange energy going on.

If I had there money, I burn mine. There not amusing enough to earn that kind of money. I don't enjoy watching any of them. Starting with Lettermen, let them all go.

Everyone if forgetting that Conan started this yeas ago when her Cried to NBC that he would better then Jay and would pull in a larger younger viewership Jay Leno, even though Jay was #1 in his time slot. And the only he would stay with NBC is if they fired Jay and put him in his place. So what did the NBC do? The gave jay 5 years to leave and did what Conan wanted, because they where afraid he was right.
WELL CONAN YOU WERE WRONG. Not only did you not bring in bigger ratings, but you cut the viewership in 1/2.
Conan has back stabbed friends, coworkers, and has made several enemies with his self absorbed behavior and deserves everything that happens to him. I hope he goes to Fox and flops.
Before all this happened I was a fan of Conan's and would still be if he had any class at all.

Conan is by far the best and funniest! Doesn't even need guests he is so funny! (but he does talk over the guest sometimes) Best house band too! (oops, nevermind, forgot Jimmy had THE ROOTS!) Jay is OK but a distant second. His skits and street interviews are the best! Dave is rude and was never really funny. Gets the best political guests but screws it up everytime! Jimmy Kimmel is an a** and definitely not funny, although he does get the best bands to play! Craig has just simply the most stupid and infantile jokes and humor, guess it's for all the visiting europeans. Jimmy Fallon just needs to go back to SNL. Hasn't quite caught on yet. Like a little-kid brown-noser! Carson Daly...who can tell WHAT kind of show that is...ok...just MY opinion...give John Stewart a shot at the Tonight Show!

I'm watching Craig ferguson as I type this. i record his show every night. he is absolutely the best. If you haven't watched him....watch him you'll be shocked at how good he is. He really deserves 11:30 and he's probably the one guy who could actually make a 10 o clock work. Of course they will have to pixilate some of what he says...lol

What's Letterman joking about, he is the lamest of the three, and his politics suck too.....

If I wanted to watch a show I wouldn't care who came before or after, to blame Jay Leno because the people are turning to Letterman is a reflection on Conan not Leno. Jay Leno should quit and lrt OBrien keep his 11:35 spot and when the people still stay away and the news still have less viewers maybe they will have to blame NBC for not standing up to OBrien when he threatned to quit if he didn't get the Tonight show.

What's going on at the top is a mystery. Instead of letting Leno and Conan go, they should can that jackass Letterman -- the epitome of a brainless nothing.

I wish Jay had never left his show, but he did. Conan uprooted his family and moved to take over the show that Jay left. Conan should be treated better than that. As far as David Letterman is concerned, don't like him, don't trust him and I never watch his show. He's not funny at all.Plus he's a dirty old man.I don't watch Jimmy Kimmel either.David Letterman and Jimmy Kimmel should put a sock in it and sit down and shut up!!

This issue is getting more attention then any of these guys shows. No network would allow their own guys bash them the way NBC is allowing these guys...I think it's just a stunt to boost ratings

Letterman of course is the jerk he always was. Man doesnt have a classy bone in his body. Leno was wiping the floor with "Ole Dave" until the boneheads at NBC performed their magic.

Jay has had his time with the Tonight Show. He left to be his "own" show at 10:00pm, which is failing miserably. It is Conan's time, and Jay should just ride off into the Sunset, as others have don before him! NBC, and all the fans, should not bow down to Jay Leno. It is a good time to go, and if Jay Leno doesn't realize this, then he is a fool... I always liked Jay Leno at 11:35, and 10:00, although I wasn't expecting a "different" show... However, it's time for him to leave. Go now, while he still has some class and respect left...

Leno is okay, but Conan is way better. Leno is just a HUGE rich ass who gets his money from making fun of people! I don't see how NBC has to make the switch, anyway. i thought Leno did a decent job at hosting his show and Conan did really well at hosting the Tonight Show. These old hosts like Leno and Letterman are getting boring and it's time for the younger guys like Conan and Falon to take their place!

I will follow Conan to whichever network he ends up.

Why is everyone going after Leno. He did not tell NBC to boot Conan for him. He is not happy about it either.
I think NBC has ruined the Tonight Show no matter what.
I don't like David Letterman so i wont be watching him. I guess I will go back to my books. Good night late night T.V.

What is "it's Conan's time?? " ...he is behind Nightline...Business is business. NBC should lose money because "It's Conan's time?" His time is up...bring back Jay who by NBC's stupidity was forced out while he brought in the ratings and was number 1.

Hey, I just want to say it's soooo nice to actually see so many intelligent responses up in here instead of that crap LOUD TYPING and "I'm going to rant about how much I hate what you like". Such a relief, thank you.
...And Conan rocks
I'm out

What NBC should do is keep Conan, get rid of Jay and Jimmy, and replace them with Ferguson.
That. My kiddies, would be amazing.

What about the George Lopez Show?! He seems to be the late night talk show host sitting in the best position of all, far far away from the whole mess and still putting out a great show.

WE LOVE CONAN!!!!! He is the nicest, and funniest. If he leaves, I can get to bed earlier, because I won't be watching anymore late night talk shows.
