When Celebs Renew Vows, Does It Save Marriages?
By Amber James Posted Jan 13th 2010 09:51AM
Over the weekend, Josh Duhamel and Fergie renewed their wedding vows -- only one year after they'd originally tied the knot. But don't pop the bubbly just yet. Although Duhamel set up the surprise ceremony, the enduring gesture comes only months after a stripper alleged that she and Duhamel had an affair, a claim both Fergie and Duhamel have denied. Will the renewals be enough to heal their marriage? Experts tell PopEater that the next year will determine the strength of their relationship.

After a Hollywood couple ties the knot, hurls the bouquet and sets off for years (or weeks) of wedded bliss, some decide to relive those wedding day butterflies and renew their vows. But how soon is too soon?
DeAnna Lorraine, a professional dating coach and matchmaker, believes both famous and non-famous couples should wait at least three years before renewing wedding vows.
"When Josh and Fergie renewed their vows, it seemed like a Band-aid and a little phony. It was like they put on this temporary glitz and glamour just so they could have those newlywed feelings again. It is only a temporary fix," Lorraine tells PopEater.
"Renewing vows is a great way to strengthen a relationship, reinstate passion and see each other in a fresh, new light... but I don't think they gave it enough time to really enjoy the feelings from the original wedding."
Fergie and Duhamel join the laundry list of other Hollywood couples who've rushed back to the altar. In May 2009, Heidi Klum and Seal renewed their vows in a "trashy wedding" ceremony filled with mullets and cornrows. Even Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony renewed their vows after four years of marriage at 3:15 a.m. at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas.
Lori Gorshow, a dating relationship coach and President of Dating Made Simple, believes high-profile couples "can use renewals as a way to say, 'Here are the lessons we've learned in the past. And here is what we're going to work on in the next year.' The renewal can be a statement of commitment in a loving way. It's a good start."
But even an elaborate renewal ceremony cannot keep a failing marriage alive. Reality stars Jon and Kate Gosselin renewed their vows in August of 2008 in Maui, Hawaii with all eight of their kids. Their marriage began to fall apart and were divorce by December 2009. When times got tough for Madonna and Guy Ritchie, they allegedly planned to renew their vows. But after seven and a half years of marriage, they wound up in divorce court instead.
While we'll never know what goes on behind closed doors, Duhamel and Fergie made a public statement to show the world they are working on their relationship. Perhaps now is the time for them to draw a line and keep some parts of their relationship private.
The next 365 day are key to working through their issues, Gorshow says. "Marriages take work, but what makes them strong is what they do to prepare for that. Josh and Fergie need communication and must be very clear about what their expectations are and make time to meet the emotional and physical needs of the relationship."

Everybody makes mistakes....so what? The point is did you learn from your mistakes. Couples that have been married for 20 or more years. Have made mistakes and have do or said some thingsin they marriage. Renew your vows to each other and this time take they seriously. OR YOU WILL LOSE EVERYTHING. GOD BLESS!

Marriage takes work, period. You have to WANT to make it work, and in doing so, means "forgoing all others". I like the hollywood couples that have remembered their vows, and keep them. Especially the marriage between Patrick Swayze and his wife Lisa. They were married before he was ever famous and during the height of his career he could have had anyone he wanted, but he stayed true blue to his wife. Even renewing their vows a few short months before his death. That's how marriage should be, not these empty vow taking celebs who remember the words they say at the alter for maybe a week, then go see who they can pick up. That's terrible.

Seriously, they're only trying to convince themselves. This only prove that no matter how successful, beautiful, kind and giving your are, men are going to cheat.

While I see your point I totally disagree that all men cheat, and I'm a man.
Thanks,
