Kelis Takes on PETA in Scathing MySpace Letter

When not crooning about milkshakes and bossiness, you can regularly find Kelis at the center of a high profile scandal -- be it her much publicized custody battle with estranged husband, Nas, or now a scuffle with PETA that's sure to ruffle a few feathers.
Some background on the situation: Kelis was photographed earlier this week wearing a very fur-centric ensemble which caught the attention of animal activist group PETA leading the singer to make a public rebuttal via her MySpace blog. Kelis not only dismisses PETA President Ingrid Newkirk as "nuts" but the organization as a whole as causing "the death of high fashion."
"I eat meat and in fact my mouth salivates as I type the word, " Kelis writes.
In her over 600 word rant, Kelis states that she would never wear the fur of endangered species, but chinchilla and mink are fair game. "Quite honestly [they] are rodents, and if it weren't in the form of a coat, I would demand they be put to death anyway."
Kelis is obviously not above writing such potentially shocking statements and proceeds with a hypothetical scenario where she "would eat pterodactyl if you found some and told me it was meaty and delicious."
Instead of focusing on the plight of the animal kingdom, the singer suggests people should focus on more worthwhile causes such as poverty in underdeveloped countries and women's basic rights in the Middle East.
"Everyone has the right to an opinion, and that's mine on that," ends Kelis. If you want to read the entire letter, click

PETA funds eco-terrorists through shady practices, and actually puts away more animals than they save through their shelters. They're shady as hell and their president is a whack-job. Their VP is a hypocrite, too--decrying the use of animal experimentation in labs, but using insulin shots and animal-derived medications to battle diabetes. I guess when your own human life is on the line, one's strong opinion about saving animal lives is but a small concern. If you want to save animals, that's cool. Just don't support PETA.

Exactly Dave...most folks have no idea what PeTA's true agenda is.

I have absolutely no use for the useless zealots at PETA. They do nothing but engage in attention seeking questionable publicity. I love animals, but much prefer the SPCA which really does something for abused animals. I despised PETA before but became nauseous when I saw their idiot president trying to defend their really insulting picture of the naked model with the crucifix. No point to that at all except to get attention for PETA.

OK this is just stupid. Im not a huge fan of PETA, as I think they get a bit on the fanatic side, although I do work with Rescue Ink, a national animal rescue organizaton. I dont see the need to wear fur. We dont eat minks, and we dont eat chinchillas, so I see no justification in it.
We eat cows, so I dont really have an issue with wearing leather.
Im not a fan of rats either, hell, Im not very fond of hamsters for that matter. But would I go on a killing spree and wear their pelts? Uh, no. Not in this lifetime.
Honestly, if most of you animal haters saw how they treated the animals they killed in the name of fashion, you would think twice about wearing their fur. Then again, maybe you wouldnt because you think the planet belongs to humans exclusively. What you dont understand is we NEED these animals or our entire eco-system goes to hell. So, if you insist on being morally selfish, keep that mind.
Ignorance can be cured by education. Stupidity is terminal.
Which one are you?

Nonsense. Watching PeTA type films on the internet from third world countries is not the true picture. Fur bearing animals will die after a short life, why not use their fur for warmth and fashion as the natives have done for eons?
Dave, the fashion industry isnt sitting around waiting for animals to die so they can skin them. They are bred for that very purpose. The natives, as you state ATE what they killed. They used every part of the animal, they didnt just farm up a bunch of minks, electrocute them, skin them and then dump their skinless bodies somewhere, so they could parade around in high fashion. They wore skin because they had to keep warm and survive. This is entirely different.
Nice try Dave. While I'm not a fan of PETA's extremeism, don't try and dismiss the films by saying they were in "third world" countries, unless you mean that Texas, California, Maine and Nebraska somehow slipped south of Mexico.
