Brittany Murphy Not on Drugs, Says Her Mom

For the first time since her daughter's sudden death, Brittany Murphy's mother Sharon is speaking out, along with Murphy's husband Simon Monjack.

The pair told PEOPLE they believe the 32-year-old actress died of a congenital heart defect that was diagnosed in her teens -- not from a drug overdose.

"She had a little bit of a cold. You could never in a billion years imagine this happening," her mother said.

Of rumors that his wife suffered from a mental illness or an eating disorder, Monjack told PEOPLE, "Do you not think anybody would have picked up on this anorexic, mentally deranged person? It's ludicrous."

"She never even drank. Maybe a glass of champagne at New Years. But everyone used to say she was wasted, she was this, she was that. It was hard for anyone to imagine that somebody was so high on life," Sharon added.

A mother always believes that her child or children do not do the things, they here. But if she did not take any drugs, what were the medications for????

First of all she was diabetic and second she was on meds for her cold. You know how the media loves to beef up the story by saying drugs were found in the home. These were prescription that she actually needed to regulate her blood sugar. I DO NOT believe she was on was a drinker or taking recreational drugs. I believe she was a person who was high on life and just an all around happy person. I wish everyone was like her, she had a great energy about her and people loved to be around her. My heart goes out to her Mother. Not only has she lost her daughter she has to fight for the rumors of what caused her death. People have to stop and think how they would feel it this were their daughter!!!

What a loss! I loved her movies. She always could make me smile. If you havent watched "The Ramen Girl" you should. She was UNIQUE! Adorable, full of life. What a shame!

Unless you lived in her home, and were beside her 24/7, you do NOT know that and should not be saying such awful things about her. You better hope to never find yourself in the position of having people saying these things about you and/or yours!

Some people are just Happy to be Alive...and they Show it! I have also been accused of being drunk or high by my OWN CHILDREN when I am happy about something. I believe she WAS suffering from an eating disorder and died of the same thing Karen Carpenter did. She looked 50 lbs under weight to me.
