Dave Letterman teed off on Jay Leno earlier this week in relation to the NBC 'Tonight' mess, and now Leno is fighting back directly at his nemesis -- only this time, it's personal instead of business. While Letterman generally kept his Leno insults showbiz-related, Leno fired off a marriage joke on Wednesday night that will surely hit close to home -- literally -- for Letterman, who last year admitted to having extramarital affairs. Did Jay go too far? What He Said After the Jump!During his monologue, Leno admitted that "Letterman has been hammering me every night," addressing the attacks to his crowd and band leader Kevin Eubanks. Leno continued, asking Eubanks: "Hey Kev, you know the best way to get Letterman to ignore you? Marry him. He will not bother you. He won't look you in the eye."
Leno, of course, was referencing Letterman's infidelity, which he announced on his show in 2009 in order to stave off an alleged extortionist. Letterman admitted that he had sexual affairs with members of his staff while he was married.
Letterman reamed Leno earlier this week, calling his current actions -- which many view as muscling Conan O'Brien out of NBC and the 'Tonight Show' chair -- "vintage Jay." "So last night, Jay gave his state of the network speech, and he said that we should not blame Conan for what's going on. And I said to myself, 'No one is blaming Conan,'" Letterman told his crowd.
The feud between Letterman and Leno goes back decades, thanks to the two dueling for the 'Tonight Show' throne in anticipation of Johnny Carson stepping down.

This whole late night thing is disturbing. Cartoon Network should bring back Merry Melodies and Hanna Barbera and we can all enjoy something together.

NO Letterman crosses the line every night Letterman is a BORING HATEFUL OLD MAN !!!
Rock On Jay Leno!!!
Leno knows how the Hollywood Casting Couch works and bends over it frequetly for NBC Producers.
Merry melodies; and Hanna barbera??? Too old-fashioned;
don't you think???
Anything after 11 pm is a cartoon at this point. I will admit I would tune in to Leno on the Tonight Show. Now, never, as I can't stand Conan and never did, never will. Letterman is an old man that I don't find funny. And, the fact that he had affairs with staff is disgusting and is open to anyone wanting to reference it. Just because he admitted his indiscretions doesn't mean he gets away with it. I am up till 1 or 2 am but NOT watching any of those jokers currently on late at night. I am watching my dvd of GLEE or Monk or Northern Exposure, etc.
I agree, Atragon! Enough already! 1st of all, it was JOHNNY CARSON who chose Leno over Letterman -- neither Leno nor Letterman had any say in THAT decision, so while it was sad for Letterman, he should never have been angry at Leno for that! And then, Conan, who was great at the later night time slot, starting flexing his muscles and made demands on NBC, saying he would jump ship & go to a rival network, if NBC didn't give him The Tonight Show by 2009, so stupid NBC kow-towed to Conan's threats & FORCED Leno to retire, when Leno didn't even want to retire! So for Letterman to keep jabbing at Jay is beyond the pale, but he's scared to going back to getting beaten in the ratings again, cuz Leno was the ratings King & thimped Letterman for YEARS... Letterman has only been better in the rankings for the last half a year, cuz Conan is tanking in the ratings slot that Leno was KING in! & NBC wants those ratings back, so putting Leno back to where he never wanted to retire from in the first place is how they'll do that -- again, that is NOT Leno's fault! It was Leno's doing to be a ratings King, it was NOT Leno's doing to be FORCED to retire, it was NOT Leno's doing that Conan threatened NBC in the first place, which made NBC jump to force the retirement, it was NOT Leno's doing that Conan tanked in the ratings, and it was NOT Leno's doing that NBC now wants to right the ship, and put Leno back to where he never wanted to retire from in the first place! Letterman is just pissed off, because his short-lived stay at the top of the ratings heap will end once Leno is back... But NONE of this is Leno's fault, so blaming him seems beyond rude and childish!
First of all, Johnny Carson did not choose Jay Leno. He chose David Letterman, but it wasn't his choice. (He even wrote topical jokes for Letterman throughout his retirement.) Secondly, Jay Leno stated that he was leaving because he thought it was time to move on, because The Tonight Show is something you hold for a while and then pass on to the next person. But then a couple months ago he went back on his word and said in an interview that he'd be happy to take The Tonight Show back if NBC gave it to him, which was probably the leverage they used to push Conan O'Brien around. If Jay doesn't dishonor the agreement, none of this mess happens. NBC relents, dumps Jay's awful primetime show, and probably lines up something awful for him in the future. Or he could've waited a year and gone to another network. If Leno had a decent bone in his body, that's the way things would have gone. And, no, he won't be back on top because he and NBC have managed to destroy his public image. There are actually rallies where people hate Jay Leno en masse, and they're loaded with people from the key demographics. I'd be surprised if he hasn't been burned in effigy yet. Sure, he'll probably win back the viewers he had before, but they'll all be dead in a few years, at which point we'll have to tolerate promos of "The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, featuring the Masturbating Bear."
JAY LENO SUCKS AND HIS EGO NEEDS SOME SERIOUS DEFLATING
I'm with team Leno. Conan gets 33 million while his staff gets 60,000. each. Doesn't Conan feel just a bit greedy?
Carson picked Letterman over leno... it was the network that ultimately made the decision to give it to leno. And Carson wasn't happy about that.
Maybe CBS should give Conan Letterman's time slot and move him back an hour.

No then we would lose Craig....a very funny man.
EXACTLY what I said. Wouldn't that be a hoot!
they should force Leno into retirement. he ego is way too big, he needs to go. and remember, these people are only as funny as their writers make them
Letterman is a piece of trash. Wish he'd go away. Hey Letterman, if you can't take it, quit dishing it.

ebicious, an apparent dumbass said,
"Hey Letterman, if you can't take it, quit dishing it."
Did you read the artical or just make up facts in your tiny little brain? Where did it say anything regarding a response from Dave?? He can take it. Apparently you cant and thats why you made your whiney, moronic comment.
Aol reported what Leno said, nobody said Letterman could not take it.That's your take on the situation. It's not even inferred in the article that Letterman cares at all.
Gap-tooth pervert Letterman is a piece of trash in my book, but, I wish Jay would take a higher road in all this foolishness. Leno knows he'll be back on top in the late night ratings soon, so just leave it at that. Jay doesn't need to sink to the level of Letterman.

Letterman trash? Based on what? Based on the fact that he's much more intelligent than most of the late night talk show hosts (and far more intelligent than you?) Based on the fact that he had an affair with one of his employees (which is none of your damn business anyway?) Based on the fact that he is most definitely scathing in his attacks, but in reality, more definitely accurate? Yes, brilliant response, trash.
