Now It's Personal: Jay Leno Jokes About Dave Letterman's Marriage

Dave Letterman teed off on Jay Leno earlier this week in relation to the NBC 'Tonight' mess, and now Leno is fighting back directly at his nemesis -- only this time, it's personal instead of business. While Letterman generally kept his Leno insults showbiz-related, Leno fired off a marriage joke on Wednesday night that will surely hit close to home -- literally -- for Letterman, who last year admitted to having extramarital affairs. During his monologue, Leno admitted that "Letterman has been hammering me every night," addressing the attacks to his crowd and band leader Kevin Eubanks. Leno continued, asking Eubanks: "Hey Kev, you know the best way to get Letterman to ignore you? Marry him. He will not bother you. He won't look you in the eye."

Leno, of course, was referencing Letterman's infidelity, which he announced on his show in 2009 in order to stave off an alleged extortionist. Letterman admitted that he had sexual affairs with members of his staff while he was married.

Letterman reamed Leno earlier this week, calling his current actions -- which many view as muscling Conan O'Brien out of NBC and the 'Tonight Show' chair -- "vintage Jay." "So last night, Jay gave his state of the network speech, and he said that we should not blame Conan for what's going on. And I said to myself, 'No one is blaming Conan,'" Letterman told his crowd.

The feud between Letterman and Leno goes back decades, thanks to the two dueling for the 'Tonight Show' throne in anticipation of Johnny Carson stepping down.

Hey, Letterman started it when he could have stayed out of it. I don't care for any of them (Letterman, Leno, Obrian) personally, but if you can't stand the heat, stay out of the kitchen. Letterman is getting payback ... and it's not personal when Lettermans antics are public knowlege.

IMO Letterman has always sucked and I refuse to watch him. I even skipped out on the episode with Keifer Sutherland whom I like very much. And I was never ever a fan of O'Brian. I don't find him funny or entertaining at all. I have always liked Leno, didn't watch the Tonight Show on a regular basis, but preferred it over Letterman. I just wish Leno had not sunk to Letterman's level and just ignored him. Leno is better than that. Letterman seems to me to not be able to get past losing the Tonight Show gig to Leno. Grow up Letterman, you lost, get over it and move on.

No matter what you think of Leno or Letterman, Leno definitely crossed the line by bringing Letterman's personal life into this. It has nothing to do with the NBC mess and Leno has no class.

I couldn't agree more. Jay is a classless ass. How would he have felt if Johnny Carson had done that to him. Carson turned the reins over and then left Jay alone. Jay did not do well at first and it took time for people to warm up to him. I will never watch Leno again!!

Letterman is jealous of Leno due to the fact that Leno got the Tonight Show way back when instead of Letterman. He just can't keep his mouth shut about this fiasco. He's wallowing in it. I find him to be a bad person and also should not be so mouthy about politics, which he knows nothing about. He is a bad person, all around.

Leno definitely crossed the line -- the only reason he never had an affair -- good grief--who would want to! He's a no talent, vicious little man. One can guarantee if Dave has a new bit on his show, within a week, Leno's copying it -- so no talent, no creativity--yup, keep him on tv--what a waste of time.

Letterman brought his personal life into his show by disclosing his staff-romance-affair on air, so Jay is poking at professional material. His wife and kids are off limits until they are brought in by Letterman, which I do believe he knows.

Oh, let 'em have at it. That is what they do. As long as Wanda Sykes does not get into the mess I am okay with it. I would like to watch the Leno Show with a strip of tape over Kevin Eubanks mouth, however. Kevin doesn't get the jokes and his baldhead and his weak jokes about pot smoking aren't funny.

Paul Schaeffer makes Kevin look like a genius. All Paul ever does is stupidly mumble while Dave does his bits, and usually Dave just ignores him.
