'Twilight' Saga Stars Get Creative to Dodge Photogs, Says Head Wolf Chaske Spencer

The explosive popularity of the 'Twilight' franchise is a mixed blessing for its stars - the movies have launched the careers of its primary players, along with a handful of standout supporting cast. But the microscope trained on the lives of these young actors has been the subject of numerous interviews, with 19-year-old Kristen Stewart telling
Interview magazine, "I don't leave my hotel room - literally ... The only way for me not to have somebody know where I went the night before is if I didn't go out at all."
PopEater spoke exclusively to
Chaske Spencer, the up-and-coming actor who portrays wolf pack leader Sam Uley in 'New Moon.' Spencer explains the pros and cons of sudden fame, staying under the radar and gives a few (very few) hints on the upcoming 'Breaking Dawn' adaptation.
Having seen the media blitz surrounding Stewart, Rob Pattinson and Taylor Lauter, Spencer says, "It was a cautionary tale. I'm a pretty private person. I know it's part of the gig, having your picture taken and walking the red carpet. I definitely have boundaries and I try to keep those boundaries, because I think it can be very unhealthy. At the end of the day, I'm an actor. I just like playing other people."
"Vancouver was very intense," he admits. "During 'New Moon,' we were still under the radar - we had paparazzi chasing us, but it wasn't as bad as in 'Eclipse.' That was something else. I know how to avoid [photographers] - there are routes that you can take and things you can do. I did a lot of that during 'Eclipse.' I like to venture out on my own and explore things. Sometimes I just don't want my picture taken. I'm not going to be rude about it, but I'm doing my own thing."
He adds, "In New York, I can blend in very well. I might get a look from time to time, but if people recognize me, I don't notice it. You know, it's a wonder what a baseball cap and hoodie can do."
Spencer, who appeared in the 2002 film 'Skins,' is enjoying his first blockbuster experience but acknowledges that he's getting it easy. "I will gladly take pictures with people and the paparazzi have been pretty nice so far," he explains. "I haven't had a bad experience with them, but I take it with a grain of salt. I feel sorry for these guys - Taylor, Rob and Kristen - 'cause they can't go anywhere. The heat is on them, and they're great people. Taylor is a great and generous man, Kristen is a sweetheart and Rob is a gentleman. The paparazzi and the fans can be a little too harsh on them; they think [the stars] don't want this, but it's a lot for them."

"You have to think about their age," Spencer adds, "they're very young and they're doing the best they can with this. I think people should cut them some slack - at the end of the day, they're just normal people. They're really good people. And I wouldn't want that type of heat."
Despite the focus on their personal lives, Spencer is grateful for the opportunities the films afford. "This whole phenomenon will die off at some point, and hopefully all of us will get careers out of it and move on to different things. Hopefully the fans will follow us. For me personally, I'm glad that it's helping my career ... It's just mind-blowing how big this phenomenon is. For an actor, it's such a gift."
As far as upcoming movies go, Spencer is tight-lipped but says fans of the books already know what to expect. "They stick very close to the literature," he explains. "I was really impressed with 'New Moon,' they were pretty faithful. [In 'Eclipse'], you get to see more of my character and learn more of the back story ... I think the fans will be very satisfied with the outcome."
Fans of the series are clamoring for details of 'Breaking Dawn,' the final chapter of the 'Twilight' saga. "I do not know a thing," Spencer laughs. "I want to know! I've heard it's going to be two movies, and I've heard the rumor that it's going to be one big movie. I really don't know."
But will it be as faithful to the source material as the first three installments? Definitely, says Spencer. "Stephenie's on set and it's her work, it's her baby. I highly doubt we're going to change anything. And the fans would die - they'd probably revolt. We try to keep true to the fans as much as possible."

I am such a big fan of the Twilight-new moon saga. But I feel bad for
Kristen and Rob and the rest of the actors. They didn't ask to be stalked and hunted like prey by the paparazzi! I hope someday a law
will be enforced to pertect actors from these intrusive people.

there is a law: no stalking, it's illegal in all 50 states...i think it applies to celebs as well as the rest of us
