Denise Richards tells Oprah: Sheen's Situation Is 'Sad'

While Denise Richards feels "sad" for Charlie Sheen's current personal plight, at least there is some solace that their former battle has reached a place a peace.

"Charlie and I are in a great place right now," Richards told Oprah Winfrey in a wide-ranging interview on Tuesday. The actress later went into detail about the process the couple went through to move away from being exes battling it out in the tabloids to being able to spend a New Year's Eve dinner together as a family.

"All of this has been a work in progress," Richards said, pointing out that the two also worked with a mediator.

Sheen has had other personal difficulties including a Christmas eve arrest for allegedly threatening his current wife Brooke Mueller. Richards related how she received a surprise phone call from her jailed husband as her children played around the Christmas tree.

"I thought it was odd that he was calling collect," Richards told Oprah. "And he said: 'Yeah, they won't let me use my cell phone here. I'm in jail.'

"He told me that he and Brooke had gotten into a fight and she called the cops."

Richards explained that Sheen had called to wish their daughters -- Sam, 5, and Lola, 4 -- holiday greetings.

"I didn't want the day to go by without saying Merry Christmas to the girls," Richards recalled Sheen saying.

As for Sheen's relationship with Mueller, Richards called it a "sad situation" but said she only wishes the two well. "(Mueller) was going to be, and is, my daughter's step mom. So I want that to be a healthy marriage," she said. "That helps everyone."

Richards also addressed her infamous relationship with rocker Richie Sambora, which caused a fallout with Sambora's ex Heather Lockear, formerly a friend of Richards.

"Richie was single, I was single. We were both going through a divorce," Richards explained. "We leaned on each other...we both had parents who had died during that time." Further Richards says she and Locklear, who was divorcing Sambora at the time, were no longer friends. "If we were friends, I never would have crossed that line with Richie," she says.

Denise Richards is a pathetic example of motherhood... "sad" doesn't even BEGIN to describe the choices SHE has made. Thank goodness Charlie is rid of HER.

Reply to Stormy..Denise Richards is far from pathetic. She is not the one being arrested for Domestic Violence. She has not had previous problems from drugs or alcohol that have caused her to be in the tabloids. Denise is smart to have dropped Charlie. Let's see if Brooke is as smart as her. Denise has been spending her time in positive ways such as having her father Irv live with her and the girls, buying a different house in upscale neighborhood and spending her time out of the tabloids and focusing on her children. Denise is financially secure and independent and does not need to settle for someone like Charlie just because he fathered her kids.

Hey Stormy, You are a Pathetic Moron !!! Denise Richards is a Fine Young Lady. I grew up next door to her Aunt and Uncle in Downers Grove,Illinois and they are Great and Reputable people that are Proud of Denise's acting career. Charlie is Charlie !!! Don't blame Denise for his problems Retard !!

At least Denise didn't bash Charlie anymore than he's already been kicked by the media during this situation. I also think that if Charlie loses his show - everyone's meal ticket will be gone. Mybe that's why she's taking the high road and playing nice since she's basically not making much money these days. Shouldn't Denise also be concerned that the step-mother of her girls was drunk at 8:30 in the morning Christmas day??? That wold disturb me. We know Charlie's history with substance abuse but now the current wife is just as bad. I don't think I'd let my kids go visit until she also goes through alcohol treatment.

Denise might not be making much money right now but does that matter? There are several actos and actresses that are not working all of the time and are doing just fine. You should be doing as well as her! Houses are no cheap in Hidden Hills and living at the Miramar in Santa Monica Cali is not cheap so I don't think you need to worry about her financial situation. Let's be real here instead of a hater! As far as being worried about step-mom being drunk in the early morning. Did she ever indicate she was not worried? Both Charlie and Brooke had been drinking the night before. I am sure Denise does not like that fact Charlie was drunk either. However, she has no control over them and nothing can be done other than what is already in the works. A court date for Sheen and Child Services Investigating. After he is found guilty or Child Services feels there is a threat to the children, then something can be done for possibly monitored visitation. Until then, you are jumping the gun and just being a hater! Get your facts straight.

Uhh...Cindy, did I ever say I was a hater. No indication of that in my blog. You are jumping the gun here. Also, Denise did not say anything about Brooke's drinking one way or the other. Regarding where and how she lives - well child support may cover a lot of that. Denise is a very pretty girl but since she was a Bond girl she isn't known for making quality movies. I'm wondering if you are a relative or friend or someone in the business. I have been in the business on and off for many years. It's not an easy way to earn a living. Looks are deceiving. Haven't you heard about Nic Cage's money problems. Appearances are everything in Hollywood and that's why it's a shock when stars suddenly claim they are broke. Saw a recent interview with Heidi Montag who admitted after all her plastic surgery - she's broke.

Evidentally, Sheen calling her house from jail appeared to be something the viewers might be interested in hearing about since we did not know that previously. Guests get booked based on what is going on in the present. The present is again, Charlie's continuous bad choices in life. He made the headlines and possible jail time. Believe me, Oprah knows what she is doing and knows who should be booked and why.

Reply to Larry...What a women is not supposed to be on a women's talk show? Would it have been better for you if she was on a male talk show? Does that really make a difference? Denise did not even point fingers at Charlie. She doesn't have to, he did it to himself. It has nothing to do with her sex but to you I guess that is how you can justify Charlie's recent bad choices. Nobody said anybody was perfect but I do think Charlie is far from perfect IF he pinned Brooke to bed, put a knife to her throat, threatened to kill her or hire an ex-cop to take care of it. Even if Brooke was not easy to live with, it does not justify that behavior. Just remember Larry, nobody is perfect but however some are closer than others based on the choices they make in life. The road they choose to go down. Charlie just keeps choosing the wrong roads. Therefore, he is further from perfect than others.
