Talk of the Town Minus Tom: Solo Katie Holmes Is All Smiles at Sundance

Move over, Amy Adams, America's former girl-next-door is back in action. A newly refreshed Katie Holmes was spotted at the Sundance Film Festival looking healthy and happy while attending a private party for her film, 'The Extra Man'. Husband Tom Cruise was nowhere to be seen at her party.

Mrs. Tom Cruise is working double duty at the festival. In addition to 'Extra,' she's been receiving much-needed buzz her role in 'The Romantics'.

That film, directed by indie producer Galt Niederhoffer, stars Holmes as a young woman who finds herself in a state of emotional turmoil while attending the wedding of a former flame. It doesn't seem as though life is imitating art, though -- at the party for The Extra Man, insiders reported to Hollywood Life that a glowing Holmes shed her Stepford-wife image for the evening, gushing to guests about her husband and children and even sipping cocktails.

Hollywood Life editor Bonnie Fuller says of the actress, "It's great for Katie to step out of the very long shadow of her husband. Professionally, it allows both Hollywood directors AND her fans, to see that she's a talented, professional woman that they can relate to. Too often she's portrayed as a zombie, Scientologist wife, when in reality we hear from multiple sources that she's a very warm, friendly and outgoing woman, who loves her career, her family - including her stepchildren, and Tom!" Buzz on Holmes' performance has been strong. The LA Times writes: Most of the time, Holmes seems to be taking on parts that don't bring out her best and in which she doesn't even seem particularly engaged ... But (her) character in "Romantics" ... is a perfect vehicle for her skills, and actually gives the actress a chance to showcase much of what distinguished her on "Dawson's Creek."

I must say I have to agree. I never, ever understand why she is always called "beautiful" by the press. She is not UGLY but she sure is plain as plain can be. You would not give her a first gland, never mind a second.

that's got to one of the few times i've seen katie smile since marrying tom. she's way to young to have to try and be the sophisticated person he wants her to be. she used to be so bubbly and outgoing and seemed happy. if he wanted a more mature and reserved woman he should have married A FULLY GROWN AND MATURE WOMAN!!!!

Katie looks beautiful and happy. I'm sure she loves Tom dearly, but he is controlling and demanding. I'll bet he thought he could mold the young woman into some sort of statue of a goddess or something. Or make her into a robot (Stepford Wife). She's always alone, it seems. It's the only time she looks happy when she's with Suri, when they can do what they want together and have a good time without Tom's interference.

We met Katie doing a wish for Make A Wish, on the Dawsons Creek set in Willmington,NC. You have never met a sweeter, nicer together young woman. Her family was very important to her and she and the cast of Dawsons Creek were wonderful with our wish teenager and our group. I do not see the Katie you all see in her recent pictures. I can still see the warmth and friendliness in her very special face. Go Katie!

Katie needs to get her life back or step up to Mr. Cruise the strong women she is. That includes anything to do with Scientology. Get going on her career again and then she will learn that yes she can have her cake and eat it too.
