Mackenzie Phillips is now claiming that the incestuous relationship she had with her father, The Mamas & The Papas singer John Phillips, was not consensual. During Tuesday's taping of HLN's 'Joy Behar Show,' Phillips rescinds her previous claims. "I'd like to reframe my word consensual," Phillips said. "As I was writing the book, I thought, this word, it kept sitting wrong with me. But I used it for lack of a better word. Since then, I've been schooled by thousands of incest survivors all across the world that there really is no such thing as consensual incest due to the inherent power a parent has over a child." Mackenzie Phillips: Relationship With My Father Was Not Consensual

Since then, I've been schooled by thousands of incest survivors all across the world that there really is no such thing as consensual incest due to the inherent power a parent has over a child." "I wouldn't necessarily call it a consensual relationship at this time," she adds. Dr. Drew also appeared during her interview, and he agreed that incest cannot be consensual.
"The child is trying to make sense of this situation she feels as though the only she can survive it is by saying, 'I'm creating it, I have some power in this, I'm consenting to it,'" Dr. Drew said. "When the fact is, the kind of relationship a parent has with a child makes consent actually impossible."
The 'One Day at a Time' star wrote in her book that she had sex with her father the night before she was to marry Jeff Sessler, a member of the Rolling Stones entourage, in 1979.
"On the eve of my wedding, my father showed up, determined to stop it," wrote Phillips, who was 19 at the time and a heavy drug user. "I had tons of pills, and Dad had tons of everything too. Eventually I passed out on Dad's bed."

When did it start, it does not matter if she is 50 years old and her father trys to have sex with her it is wrong, and it will take a strong person to say no.
There are too many case where the father took advange of the daughter and had some kind of sex with her. It is never consensual. To worry about humiliating the family, some one in the family most likly knew long ago that this happened. They did not want to admit it.
Yes I believe her. There are some fathers who can't control them selves. But the most of the fathers in this country are good men and take care of their families and daughters, and would kill any one who abused them.
Just a few rotten eggs.

I think she knew what she was doing, just a drugged out piece of crap...all that group were screwed up losers.

I read her book and had very little sympathy for her.
She has many many issues with her dad. He was a horrible father yet she is still obsessed with him (even though he's been dead for many years).
According to her, she had a ten year sexual relationship with her dad.
At first she calls it rape. If that's the case, she was "raped" quite a few times before she acknowledges it became consensual. The first time she was "raped", she gained consciousness during the act and blacked out at the beginning and end of it. The next time she was "raped", she woke up in her father's bed with her pants around her ankles ... that happened more than once. Why did she let herself get into that situation in the first place?!
In her healing, I can understand why she would write this book. But why publish it and hurt so many in her family? Plus her dad isn't around anymore to defend himself.

People - you really shouldn't blame the victim. And you shouldn't cast stones. This woman is screwed up for sure but who could blame her with this past. 19 years. old does not automatically make you a sane, clear thinking adult. While everyone is stuck on her age - people - victims are GROOMED, sometimes for many years and they don't even realize it. Not to mention she was hooked on drugs by her father's hand. How can you think she had the capacity to to think clearly and make sound decisions? This is her story and you don't know who she may be helping by putting this out there. Who knows what I will say when my father is dead? Too bad the other adults in her life couldn't have protected her like every child deserves.

Her Mother? Most of us from the 60's never knew who her Mother was. She wasn't in the picture in any public way. After a teen Michelle Phillips humiliated her by having such a public affair with her husband John and then was made part of the band The Mama's and the Papa's, she just faded into the background. I do remember a book about Michelle that told how they took a very young Mackenzie with them to an island and left her on her own. Even at night, There was lots of drugs and odd things going on even then. It appears that John Phillips was a total loser. No matter what, Mackenzie is a victim of all of the adults in her early life. However, the past is gone and she can still take hold of her own life. Not under the infulence of Drugs, though. Good Luck Mackenzie, it'll be worth it and what could possibily be worse than what you've just faced up to?
