Label Defends Taylor Swift as 'Voice of a Generation'

Taylor Swift was more than a little pitchy at the Grammys on Sunday, but the onslaught of criticism from viewers, fans and the media has ticked off the head of her record label. Scott Borchetta, CEO of Big Machine Records, went on a media offensive this week to respond to all the backlash over Swift's multi-song performance, which included a cringe-worthy duet with Stevie Nicks, the young singer's idol. But in defending Swift, did the label boss exacerbate the situation?
"Maybe she's not the best technical singer," he began in comments to
The Tennessean, "but she's probably the best emotional singer because everybody else who gets up there and is technically perfect, people don't seem to want more of it."
Borchetta slammed critics, which included the New York Times and the Washington Post among others, but also may have overreached in his description of the pop-country singer.
"I think (the critics) are missing the whole voice of a generation that is happening right in front of them," he told the paper.
Voice of a generation? Borchetta used the same phrase in an interview with the Associated Press on Wednesday, and added that Swift "speaks directly to (her fans), and they speak directly back to her."
"This is not 'American Idol.' This is not a competition of getting up and seeing who can sing the highest note. This is about a true artist and writer and communicator. It's not about that technically perfect performance."
Borchetta appears to be trying to lower expectations for Swift's vocal abilities while at the same time raise her profile as the Bob Dylan or Kurt Cobain of Generation Y. (In a twisted way, it makes perfect sense: Dylan and Cobain are known more for their iconic songwriting than their actual vocals.)
Talk of Swift's sub-par performance nearly overshadowed the fact that she beat album of the year favorites Beyonce and Lady Gaga.
PopEater readers, who by and large are huge Swift-backers, agreed it wasn't her best night. "Horrible ... embarrassing" wrote one commenter about Swift's live voice.
"It's that classic thing that critics do of building something up and then wanting to tear it down," Borchetta told the AP.
The label boss blamed a technical issue for throwing Swift off on Grammy night when singing 'Rhiannon' with Nicks, though The Recording Academy hasn't revealed any such problem.
"We had a volume problem in the ear. So, she was concerned that she wasn't able to hear everything in the mix," Borchetta said. "That's just part of live TV. ... So you're going to have difficulties on occasion. Unfortunately, on one of the biggest stages, we did have a technical issue. She couldn't hear herself like she had in rehearsal."
Swift's 'Fearless' has sold over 5 million copies and was the top selling album of 2009. She is the youngest artist to ever win the Grammys' top prize of album of the year.

Taylor is the voice of the new generation, because they are all off key. Truthfully, TS can't sing and it goes to prove that marketing is more important than talent. I felt sorry for Stevie Nicks as she seemed a little embarrassed by TS's singing ability, but she handled it with grace. Record companies are losing money because they're focused on getting the public to buy crap instead getting quality talent. I miss the 70's.

Taylor Swift and so many of her musical counterparts are just plain lazy and rely on their looks and personality to get them on the charts. It's cool to sing off-key and to sing-talk because it reflects the attitude of that generation.
PS...Loved you in Johnny Guitar and Wagon Train!!
In all honesty, I have never heard any of her songs except for little clips and I must say I hate what I hear. Nowadays, good music is in short supply and I personally consider it an insult that she is compared to Cobain or Dylan, probably two of the best songwriters ever. Her lyrics are lame and so is her voice. Just because you sell the most albums it doesn't mean you are the voice of a generation!
Beyonce isn't much better. She can sing but her music is dreadful, showing not even an inkling of depth or improvement. It is safe to say that our generation was doomed from the beginning.
It is my belief that music runs in a cycle. Hopefully some real talent will return and the next decade will be the new 60s. Maybe it is time for music to start again.
I am so totally with you! The singers and the bands back in the '70's and early '80s didn't need all that fancy "TECHNICAL" stuff to sing a song. They could actually sing on key! Today, no matter if it's pop, hip-hop or country they can't sing a note on key if they tried.
Have you ever heard Kenye West on SNL? SAD!!!
I am a bit too young for the seventies myself, but I miss that music and real country music. I am just happy that I don't feel like the only one anymore that thinks TS cannot deliver. I am certain I couldn't do any better, but I was also told by a chorus teacher if you can't you shouldn't and she was right. Not only can TS not, she can't horribly. Her live shows are absurd and every performance that I have watched of hers on TV has been awful. She is always a "bit pitchy", "off key", "out of tune" the last one always in duets except with the nasaly sounding Kelli Pickler.
Man! Who are you tellin'!!!!
To everyone saying that there is no real music and they hope it goes back to the 70s and 80s - if you want real music you're not going to find it on the radio. Or on a Billboard chart. I've never heard a Taylor Swift song in my life and in all honesty, if it weren't for Kanye West I still wouldn't know who the hell she is.
Thanks Kanye.
Amen, Brother Ward, Amen!
I agree! I miss the 70's!!! I have seen Taylor Swift, she does have a mass appeal, but unfortunately I don't believe she is a great singer. I hate when the difference between recordings and live performances are so different. She definately has given voice to many tweens and teens but I am waiting for her to grow as a songwriter you can only sing so many songs about HS heartbreak. It would be sad for someone with her songwriting talent to get stuck writing the same type of song, hopefully as she gets more life experience her songs will reflect that. As for her performance with Ms. Nicks OMgosh! I couldn't watch it!
You have to blame the industry for promoting this girl and not letting her mature into someone who could pull off a liver performance and back up her sales record. She is their gravy train and naturally her label boss is going to defend her. After all he's probably buying a new home as we speak.
beyonce isn't much better. that's a nutty opinion. beyonce is one of the best combinations of talent and pop sensibility ever. great dancer (without relying on excessive slutty moves 24/7). soulful singer, uhhh check. chill persona, check? writes her own songs (at least for the last album) great songs at that. check! i think you need to check yaself before you wreck yaself
I full heartedly agree, she sings off key! Amazing that someone like her gets all these awards. We certainly have more talented performers than her. All this hoopla about her is simply pathetic!
Ward, I couldn't have said it better. There very little real talent and you can count one hand the people who can really sing.
You are so right. The first thing American Idol does is look at someone before they start listening to them. The hell with how they look. If a person can't sing, they should not be producing albums. It is the voice I love, not how they look. And, by the way, just because you can hit those high notes, doesn't mean you should. It hurts my ears and my senses.
Me too!!!!!
I couldn't agree more, Ward Bond. The performance was AWFUL the other night and you couldn't blame Stevie Nicks. She has what? One note? But at least she sings it well. he he he
As for Taylor Swift, I think it's shameful what the record industry has done here. She's 19. She was dressed like a 30 yr old in an age-inappropriate gown. She performed poorly. She doesn't sing well. She reminds me of that chipmonk-brat Miley Cyrus, in the way she has been elevated to a position that she truly has not earned.
She seems like a nice enough kid but....the music sux, the performance sux, the genre sux - and hmm...I think the record label CEO Borchetta sux most of all.
The only reason her CDs are on key is due to studio sound mixing. Taylor has never performed live on TV when she wasn't flat.
I can't begin to count the number of times I've watched one of these awards shows and a multitude of the performers sound off-key or pitchy. I don't think Taylor Swift is alone in this debacle. In addition, being a teen of the 70s...I can't help but think we weren't exacly listening to pitch perfect performances back then either...for example Ted Nugent and the Rolling Stones quickly come to mind among many others.
I can't stand today's music, but if I had a choice, I'd take Ms. Swift over Ms. Knowles. At least Ms. Swift puts some effort into writing and singing songs and doesn't recycle the same garbage over and over again like Beyonce does.

What radio have you been listening to? All of Swift's songs are a rehash of the last. Same old, same old...a snooze-fest of lame lyrics and music.
