Lindsay Lohan: Celebrity Hoarder or Just a Young, Rich Celebrity?
By Amber James Posted Feb 4th 2010 04:44PM
Lindsay Lohan's latest interview with The Insider has been circulating the Web claiming that she's a "secret celebrity hoarder." Cameras pan through her home revealing her piles (and piles) of designer fashion, shoes and probably every free item she's ever been handed. The interview clip hints that she's filling the emotional void with tangible junk and placing much of the blame on her father Michael Lohan. While we aren't disregarding any daddy issues, was America supposed to feel sorry for her or had the media managed to turn her lavish lifestyle into a problem? PopEater decided to call up a few psychologists and hoarder experts to find the truth about Lohan's cluttered lifestyle.

In a new video leaked by The Insider, Lohan walks through the piles of clothing she has obtained, which she just can't seem to part with. "I just need to get rid of stuff," says Lindsay. "That's personal stuff that I have to, you know, work on." The video insinuates that Lohan has been keeping this secret behind closed doors. But is it all just clever editing? Watch:
Clinical psychologist Suzanne Chabaud, who is a veteran interventionist on A&E's 'Hoarders', tells PopEater that Lohan's hoarding has nothing to do with her celebrity status. More likely, Lohan is filling an emotional void and channeling her search to find perfectionism, Chabaud says.
"Celebrity or not, hoarders will hoard. In Lindsay's case, she is showing an over attachment to objects rather than intimate relationships -- which may be lacking in her life. Typically hoarders place a high emotional value on items that may represent a high point in their life or even cover up emotional pain like not feeling loved as a child," Chabaud adds.
Before this turns into a Lifetime movie, let's not forget Lohan is a 23-year-old woman with millions of dollars to blow. Let's face it, women love shopping, whether it's for hot new pumps or a new Gucci purse -- even if it is out of one's price range. Imagine being able to buy whatever your heart desires -- trust me, that credit card would be smoking. And on top of that, Lohan is also receiving free swag from top fashion designers. (Hey, being a celebrity does have its perks.) Who wouldn't want to keep it all?
We are on Team Lohan but can't understand why the media is only focusing on her possessions. What about Paris Hilton or Mariah Carey -- have you seen their closets? Are we over-analyzing Lohan's rich lifestyle or is there really a deeper issue?
It's no secret that Lohan has a lot on her plate: her (seemingly) dysfunctional family can't stay out of the media and her movie career has been a roller coaster since her DUI arrests and stints in rehab. Plus, she hasn't been lucky in love, having just ended her tumultuous romance with Samantha Ronson last year. "When there is an accumulative amount of stress, the hoarding symptoms start showing," Chabaud says.
If Lohan really is a hoarder (and not just a rich, pack rat), psychologists believe Lohan may have to undergo years of "intense" therapy sessions to "regain her self confidence and start trusting herself to make the right decisions." Within a few sessions, psychologists would make the hoarder let go of particular objects and reveal the real emotional connection these items. "As hoarders let the items go, they are forced to deal with emotions they are truly hiding, like a family loss or anger toward their mother for instance."
Could this be an impact from all of Hollywood's Lohan bashing? Perhaps. But we don't buy it -- just yet. There is a reason her mother Dina Lohan started Lohan House, an auction Web site where you can buy everything from Lindsay's Marc Jacob's boots to a $1,800 Salvatore Ferragamo leather bag. While we're not denying that Lohan has a lot of issues to work though, we think the "celebrity hoarder" title is misguided and deceiving.

I'm sure that Lindsay can afford a personal assistant to help her organize her closet/stuff...or buy a bigger house or rent a storage unit for heavens sake! A furniture store associate or interior decorator could easily fix up her place after that.....Problem solved!

Packrats of a certain stripe can have psychological motivations, such as borderline personality disorder (speaking from experience) or they can steal (i.e. Wynona) items. It is embarassing, because it's not about the *things* at all - it's the _lack_ of what they are replacing that is so embarassing and emotionally greivous. Lindsay is not obsessed with fashion as much as she is obsessed with quantifying her emptiness (and I don't say that as an insult).
