Kelly Clarkson to Taylor Swift's Label: 'Idol' Hits High Notes ... And Right Notes
By PopEater Staff Posted Feb 5th 2010 06:34AM
Kelly Clarkson is fired up about Taylor Swift's "pitch-challenged" performance at the Grammy Awards and weighing in about the recent comments made by Big Machine Records's Scott Borchetta who called Swift "the voice of this generation." In the same statement, he added, "This is not American Idol. This is not a competition of getting up and seeing who can sing the highest note. This is about a true artist and writer and communicator." Clarkson posted a letter on her blog (via PEOPLE) that she found it "upsetting" that he attacked the reality singing show. "We not only hit the high notes, you forgot to mention we generally hit the 'right' notes as well," the 'American Idol' winner wrote.

"Thank you for that 'Captain Obvious' sense of humor," Clarkson adds.
While Clarkson admitted that she has had "shaky" performances in the past, she didn't think he handled the situation well. "Every artist has a bad performance or two and that is understandable, but throwing blame will not make the situation at hand any better... instead of lashing out at other artists (that in your 'humble' opinion lack true artistry), you should simply take a breath and realize that sometimes things won't go according to plan or work out and that's okay."
Clarkson then signed her letter with "Sincerely, One of those contestants from American Idol who only made it because of her high notes," and added a winking smiley face.

Another Black Season
Hitting the right notes when I can. :)
I've heard Taylor Swift sing many times,,and i have to admit, she didn't sound good. So what do her manager has to say about that??
I agree! Kelly has a much better singing voice than Taylor. Every time (and I do mean every single time) I hear Taylor sing, she is pitchy and seem slightly tone deaf. Personally, I wonder who she blew to get where she is. Kelly is an obvious winner in all catagories of her singing. and yes, at least Idol makes sure their winners can do more than "hit high notes". Instead of Taylors label making excuses, maybe they should apply at least some of that energy into singing lessons for this new "diva in the raw".
LOL I was going to say the same exact thing!!!
kelly sings much better than taylor.......You just know there's more than talent behind swift's rise to fame. I just don't see her as a fast rising star.
clarkson is a great singer and a people person. Swift should write only maybe.

Actually, Taylor was/is a fast-rising star. I just think she's already hit her peak and we won't be hearing much more from or about her as the years go on. She's really limited in her range both singing, and lyrics.
Kelly sounds good when her mouth isn't full. Pull that chicken leg out yo mouth and sing.
They both suck and sound like Disney Channel singers that my 4 year old watches.
Kelly Clarkson really doesnt have talent. She just won some reality show. Taylor Swift writes good lyrics but she sounds like she's straight off of a Kidz Bop CD.

E-Dogg, As a professional singer and vocal instructor, I have to say that you may not like Kelly Clarkson's style, but she is an extraordinary singer and saying she has no talent is just your uninformed opinion. Sorry, that is my informed opinion.
I tend to agree with you! Neither one of them can really sing well but Kel is the better of the two live. Studio recordings can make anyone sound good!
The difference is that Kelly Clarkson can sing.. Taylor Swiftless can not.. She is a manufactured singer who sounds awlful live.. I know this because I have seen her live.

i totally agree, she is totally manufactured in a studio, and the fact she writes her own songs just proves she is totally untalented
Well Mare - I'm not a professional talent scout or voice coach like you seem to be...but I took my daughter to see Taylor Swift twice in Atlanta and I thought she put on a great show and sounded just fine. Could she be an opera singer? NO! Does she have a classic amazing voice like Aretha, Christina Aguilera or Mariah Carey? No! She has her own voice, writes her own songs and plays her own instruments which is better than 95% of what is considered popular these days. Give her a break, she is 19 years old and a good person who is about as good a role model as ther is for young girls in the music business today!
Taylor Swift is just another packaged deal. Whether she came through American Idol or some other way. The kids like her and she has a sweet way about her but she certainly has no "voice" of the century. I believe that the talent reveals itself one way or the other, Jennifer Hudson has won every award and is a phenom. Taylor just can't keep up with that talent. Carrie Underwood is another one. I like Taylor and I don't want to take away from her success but greatness does not and will never apply to her whereas it does to several of the American Idol contestants.

When I first heard Taylor Swift live on a tv show, I thought she sounded awful. Now I know her sound is produced in the studio and it's all a big shame - but that's true for most of the so-called "singers" today. Except for several Idol alumni like Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, Jennifer Hudson, Daughtry, David Archuleta and Clay Aiken - yes, Clay Aiken -- the man who has a fabulous voice and was practically boycotted on radio when he put out his first cd. There was alot of discrimination against Idol and I guess there still is!

Could not agree with you more. Clay Aiken, Jennifer Hudson, Carrie Underwood (still not sure about her) all have wonderful voices, Taylor is a lucky girl, at the right place, with the right management at the right time. Voice wise she appeals to her young fans, because she writes about high school, boys, etc.
She does not have the vocals those above have, no way no how.

I know this isn't very original, but why don't they just sing, or manage, or do makeup, or whatever they do. There is no entertainment value in this.

I'm gonna quote Billy Idol from an interview he did on MTV back in the 80's: "Everyone thinks you have to be bloody Mick Jagger or bloody Robert Plant to be able to sing. What a load of sh**! Mick Jagger can't sing and Robert Plant can. But do I listen to Robert Plant? No. I listen to Mick Jagger, because he can't sing and he sounds great!"
I like Kelly and Taylor, but I'll choose Taylor any day, because it's not about having a perfect voice. It's about singing from the heart and touching someone else's!
