Andrew Garcia, a father hoping to make a better life for his child, took the stage on the first night of the infamous Hollywood Week on 'American Idol' and sang a rendition of 'Straight Up.'It was a risky choice, considering Paula Abdul, who made the tune famous, had left the show. But Garcia, with guitar in hand, nailed his toned-down version.

Can some one explain what the heck Ellen Degeneress is doing on that panel.It made more sense to get Adam Lambert or Clay Akins if they were looking to expand their gay fan base at American Idol.

You got that right! Ellen who? Geez! You've got to be kidding me. As for the new version of Straight Up I think it's pretty good. Also, the version here on AOL is a remix, not the original. Still sounds pretty good, and damn! Paula is still a babe 25 years on. Good for her!
Ellen loves music...She watched American Idol religiously, always discussed the latest show and kept us all current on what was happening.
She always invited the latest castoff to her show to talk and perform. She often had the Idol Judges on and seems to be very good friends with Ryan Seacrest. She likes Simon too because of his support for humane society causes.
Ellen is a music lover in general inviting the top bands onto her show. She always took time to talk to them and dance with them. I suspect Ellen was hired to provide some humor but also for her impression of the talent.
I suspect she is going to be a fun addition.
Somebody please give Andrew the message to sing Jameriqui musics. This is without a doubt is style of music
If they wanted a gay they should have gotten a gay singer not Ellen.

My days of watching American Idol are finally over. Ellen DeGeneres is a joke, and if Howard Stern joins the panel American Idol goes down the drain. Are we so desperate that we can't find good judges of musical talent any more, and we have to resort to a person like DeGeneres? Oh, well, it was a good run. Bye American Idol.

I really do miss Paula. The show now is so predictable. Paula brought energy and spontaneity. You never knew what to expect when Paula was on. Ellen is funny and witty but she nor Karla bring the soul and heart that made America Idol a success and fun to watch. Please bring Paula back.

Sexual preference of a judge has nothing to do with it! A judge of a singing contest should be picked on their knowledge or expertise in the singing business. Ellen has expertise in the singing business? No. So why was she picked?

I think its great that Ellen is a judge, she is brilliant, astute, savvy and right on target, it doesnt take a professional musician to have an eye for talent. She has a natural rhythm within her, she knows how to use it. As for the new rendition of Straight Up, I loved it, I never understood the words of this song when Paula did it- Garcia seems to really have it going on- only i wish the gang tatoo on his neck wasnt so visible, its a bit daunting. blessings to all....

Well now with the addtion of ellen maybe Digarmo needs to pop a few pills and have a martini or two and we can almost have Paula back! I mean she was obriviated most of the time anyway. ok, i miss paula too. but ellen did a great job. we can't do anything about paula leaving. it's not ellen's fault. if you don't want to watch it anymore then don't. as for ellen....open your minds and try to enjoy and if it isn't your cup of tea then hey it's ok. my husband was dead against ellen replacing paula and he actually enjoyed the show last night.
