Ellen DeGeneres Hits High Notes on 'Idol' Debut
By Amber James Posted Feb 10th 2010 09:53AM
Ellen DeGeneres finally made her 'American Idol' debut on Tuesday night, sitting along side Simon Cowell, Randy Jackson and Kara DioGuardi at the judges' table. It was Hollywood week on 'Idol,' and DeGeneres proved from the get go that she was there to work and not overshadow the contestants. DeGeneres seems to be fitting in nicely, and she's been getting nothing but raves from critics. See what critics (and fans) are saying after the jump. >>

With DeGeneres now a part of the dysfunctional 'Idol' family, critics seem to be welcoming her with open arms. "Even if 'American Idol' ends this week, there will officially be an Ellen Era: in just one episode, new judge Ellen DeGeneres displayed why it's no stretch at all for her to step into Paula Abdul's chair. She was witty both in her embraces and her take-downs," The NY Times wrote.
Even critics who had doubts realized DeGeneres filled gaps that were clearly lacking at the 'Idol' judging table. "Although I initially thought she was a terrible choice (based on her spotlight-hogging star power, her conflict of interest and one astoundingly painful guest judge appearance on 'So You Think You Can Dance'), I can now say that Ellen DeGeneres is exactly what's been missing from the judge's table since the fourth season: Passion... Unlike Randy, Kara or Simon, Ellen treated her new gig as a job worth taking seriously," said MTV's Jim Cantiello.
DeGeneres acknowledged at the beginning of the episode that even though she wasn't a singer, she understood the pressure it takes to perform and entertain large audiences. The sincere remark made some forget about Paula Abdul completely. "She got to work being honest, but not brutally honest, lightening the mood when tension threatened to take over the room," Rolling Stone writes.
Of course, DeGeneres' humor still made its way into the room, which was probably a sigh of relief to some contestants stressed about making a great first impression during auditions. The Wall Street Journal liked DeGeneres' humor: "It is clear, at least from these scenes, that Ellen is taking her role seriously. With the last four contestants from day one on stage, Ellen asked one to step forward. Another stepped forward -- no, wait, back. The contestants are on edge. 'You, step a little to the left.' Ahhhhh, a joke! They were all through. Simon smirked, 'You sadist.' Joke rating: 8 out of 10."
Even fans sang their praises about her role. "Better then I thought she would be. Level headed, great judge so far," a PopEater Facebook fan wrote. Another fan agreed, "Ellen did a great job. I love her humor."
Surprisingly, many critics used DeGeneres' reviews to point out what the other judges lacked. "Breathe easy, America. She did fine. She's got a brain. She's got ears. She says funny things sometimes. Considering the caliber of 'American Idol' judges (other than Simon) that makes her Mozart. And now that there finally is someone on the panel who has something to offer. Kara really disappears into the woodwork; confirming what we all knew -- she's as useless as cufflinks on pants," Huffington Post's Ken Levine wrote.

You surely should watch an orthography/spelling book in your spare time
GOOD! WE have more than enough viewers without you!
I thought Ellen was Brilliant! I now see how dull the other Judges seem to be.. We could actually get rid of Randy and Kara and it would be just fine. LOVED Ellen!!!

Ellen did fine...she's a delightfully honest and caring person. I do think the show is very overrated and is on it's way out, especially if Simon leaves. I HAVE NEVER liked Kara and I see by the polls that many others don't either. She's such a "me" person and thinks she's so hot...WHICH SHE IS NOT!!

I had already decided that I was going to hate Ellen being on my favorite show. BUT, I was pleasently surprised. I thought she did a great job...honest, funny, professional and I think respected by the contestants. It may work.....

I couldn't have said it better! My feelings exactly.
Ellen was fantastic, but what else could you expect from a great caring, fun lovinf person than her. more people in this world should be as kind and generous

Ellen as Idol judge is a class act-honest, thoughtful, amusing and she has the ability to say no without tearing someone's heart to pieces. Of course, that's because she herself is a class act.

Its about Ellens eyes. Gorgeous!

are you drinking everclear!
I also thought Ellen was a horrible idea but was very pleasantly surprised last night. She did well - not overpowering anyone else. She seemed to be genuine in her praise and not nasty in her critiques. I kind of think she's better than Kara, even though Kara had the credentials in the music industry. I can only think that Ellen will get better and perhaps she and Simon can pump it up a bit. It's been very dull on the judging panel for the last few years because Simon seemed to have lost interest ( now we know why).

1st) Ellen wasn't put on AI to replace Paula. That was Kara being brought on last year.
2nd) Ellen is there to replace Simon.
3rd) You will see a 3rd person introduced by the end of the season or beginning of next season to replace Randy.

I thought Ellen did a terrific job. She truly shows why she's America's favorite. She is funny and can ease anyone's pain after Simon leashes his fury on them. I know FOX picked a real winner, since Ellen, I have begun watching American Idol again Thank you so much it's worth watching now.

Oh BOB, you're such an imbecile. Grow up.

Isn't that sweet! We now have a clipped haired, scouling lesbian to look at... What happened to the once beautiful Ellen? What a shame! Political correctness will be the death of America.

Chet, so the downfall of America is going to be short haired lesbians? You're a wingnut.
Clipped hair is all you've got? LOL. Wow. Maybe she can grow it out and borrow your curling iron....
At last! A class-act on the Judges Table that not leaving blood all over the floor. Sincere, quality choice Judge. Bravo.
