John Mayer Chokes Up at Show Over Playboy Scandal

His Twitter mea culpa behind him, John Mayer asked a crowd of actual people on Wednesday to forgive him for those race-tinged, hyper-sexual and wholly inappropriate comments made in a newly published Playboy interview. The blues-rock singer teared up as he spoke to fans in Nashville about descending into a "wormhole of selfishness" with his "quest to be clever" in the media. He said he's "done" acting foolish and just wants to "play my guitar."

Mayer's interview went awry in so many ways, including a casual use of the N-word, graphic thoughts on his sex life with ex-girlfriend Jessica Simpson and, perhaps most bizarrely, that his sexual member was a "white supremacist" and prevents him from having intimate relationships with black women.

At the concert Wednesday night, Mayer said he had lost sight of what's important to him: "the people that I love and the people that love me."

"I went as I've begun to do, into a wormhole of selfishness and greed and arrogance," he said, adding he'd begun "thinking that if I just continued to be witty and pull together the most fast phrases that I could, that I could be clever enough to buy myself another day without thinking that anybody had finally pinned me down and said, 'you're a creep.'"

Mayer said he "feels absolutely terrible" for hurting people with his comments. "It feels worse than any headline I thought I could get my way out of."

He then changed the focus of his speech to his band, which includes many African-American musicians and singers, in an apparent attempt to defuse the scandal boiled up by his N-word use. His voice wavering with emotion, he said:

"I think it's important to know that everybody on this stage is here not because they condone what I say in any given interview -- and certainly not the interview that's arisen today. They're on this stage because they support myself as a possible future grown-up.

Maybe they see something that I haven't looked at in a while. So maybe I need to take a break from trying to be clever and just spend a little time looking at what they see. Because they've done an unbelievable thing tonight just being on the stage."

Mayer then made clear his game plan going forward: "I quit the media game. I'm out. I'm done," he said. "I just want to play my guitar to whoever's around."

The "game" as he calls it is one he plays often, both on Twitter and in numerous interviews that tend to teeter on ridiculousness.

Just last week, the singer was quoted by the New York Post as saying, "When I get married that's gonna be my vows, 'Do you, John Mayer, take this woman to have and to hold, to wear her ass like headgear?' Yes, I do -- you're the one whose ass I wanna wear like a hat for the rest of my life."

In an interview with Rolling Stone in January, Mayer introduced his views on the kind of woman he'd settle down with. "You need to have them be able to go toe-to-toe with you intellectually. But don't they also have to have a vagina you could pitch a tent on and just camp out on for, like, a weekend? The Joshua Tree of vaginas?"

And the worst part, he can't even sing! Or play his guitar! Pleases get over yourself, your 15 minutes of fame is gone. There is only one King of Music who is now gone; John Mayer get yourself another occupation and leave us all alone.

Ugh! I read John Mayer's Rolling Stone interview and was so turned off that I don't think I could ever listen to or watch John Mayer ever again. (Not that I ever found him all that enjoyable). But, out of fairness, I asked my husband to read it, just in case I was being overly sensitive. My husband confirmed my belief that Mr. Mayer is deeply disturbed. I do not believe for one minute that Mr. Mayer is sorry for his behavior or words. He says he's trying to be "clever"?? What is Clever about his mysogynistic views of women, his sophmoric attempts at sexual bragging or his stunted emotional attitudes? Now add racist to the mix. He has all the ingredients that make for a big bowl of human crap. I'll pass.

He didn't need to wait for someone to realize he's a creep. I've been saying it for years.

John better thank his God that I am not Jessica Simpsons father. His butt would be smeared all ovr the streets of his next gig.
Didn't his parents ever tell him that only a low life, low mentality, trash takes advantage of a girl and then tells anyone about it, not to speak of telling the entire world about it. How insecure he must feel and how uncertain he must feel of his career to think he has to stoop so low to get attention. Saying you are sorry will never erase the shame and humiliation this girl must be feeling.Why would any sane person want to hurt someone like that. Is he so stupid and immature that he thought that would make him look good?
Even though Romo split with her, I would wager Mayer don't want to meet with Romo on a dark ally . I believe Romo would tear him apart out of respect for his ex girlfriend.
I never cared for his singing or playing and don't know any men that really do. Now that he has insulted every woman (Black and White) in the world, lets see how many fans he has left.
I hope Jessica sues his ass and I hope she breaks him.

I think most stars are full of themselves, when they make movies and songs that go number one, they tend to think their gods sorta like congress and the rest of those idiots on capital hill.
This guy I will never buy another song of his I will not support his ego,,and the only reason women like him is because he sings and make records, why dont he date a real nice girl working at Walmart or cracker barrel, these stars seem to think the have to stick with their own kind, and what kind is that? better then us....screw them

Incredible lack of control and respectable public decorum by this incredibly attention seeking faux 'musician'. He reminds me of a guy in High School, who schmoozed and circulated with all the 'popular' clique kids, pretending to be everybodys "friend", but who'd sell off his grandmother- if it meant something was in it for him. This guy is nothing more than a male gossip prostitute. What an embarrassing dolt.

This is what happens when you allow entertainers to do anything but entertain. You don't do this with any other service like a plumber or your dentist or your trashman. We pay entertainers to serve us when they are done they should just walk away quietly and shut up. This includes the podium when they win an award. I don't give a rats a** what Meryl Streep or Sean Penn think about anything just entertain me I will pay you and then vanish.
