Nicole Richie and Joel Madden Reveal Their Engagement

After three years and two children together, Nicole Richie and Joel Madden finally let the world know something their friends and loved ones have been privy to for awhile: they're getting hitched!

Richie was the first to pop the cork on the news, confirming the news during her Monday taped-appearance on 'The Late Show with David Letterman.'

Shortly after, Good Charlotte front man Madden had his say, taking to his Twitter page to add his own twist on the announcement. He revealed that the two have actually secretly been engaged for some time.

"Yep. I'm engaged. Very happy," Madden wrote. "Yeah we've been engaged for a while so you're all kind of late on that. But thanks for the hooplah all the same."

Taking a knock at the tabloids who have long-speculated over the couple's possible breakups, make-ups and secret weddings, Madden added a note highlighting their discreet inner circle.

"P.S. that's why I love my family and friends. None of them are sources. All good tight lipped people who let us enjoy it! Thanks everybody."

Awww, what a sweet turn of events. In my simple-minded way (I love weddings!) I'll be sure to track down the church, stand outside in happy tears, and have rose petals and rice to toss at the happy, happy couple! Should we all pitch in and send them a blender or a toaster? Maybe a gift certificate for Walmart? I hope Jerry Springer's babymamas searching for their babydaddys get a clue now. They can be bridesmaids and Maury Povitch can be best man!

Congrats to these two!! I, for one, am happy for them. And to Micheal K, there's alot of people in the world that "squeeze out bastards and then get married". So basically, you're calling everyone that does this a loser. It's not just typical in Hollywood.

The chances of unmarried couples who live together and have children together are at a high risk for divorce. There are stats that prove this because if Madden walked out on Richie she doesnt get anything except child support and because they started out as domestic partners that can be detrimental to the woman because she entered this arrangement knowing what came with it and having two OOW children is a reflection of how she values herself as a woman.

I do believe Michael K wasn't using the term as a slang. He is correct. Innocent or not, those children are bastards. Born out of wedlock. Those parents should be ashamed that they made that label for their offspring.

Sorry Melissa Stephens, but it does make your child a bastard. You can take it for whatever you want. It is only a word, just because it has a negative connotation doesn't mean you have to take it that way. My nephew is a bastard child, along with many of my friends children. It does not make them any less special. Its the hypocritical so-called christians that make it negative.

It took two kids and shacking up for them to know they wanted to marry...how sad. Both should have known the first year or two years they wanted to marry. Because they lived together the chances of them divorcing is greater as well and there are statistics that prove it.

When you provide the definition of Bastard as being an illegitimate child...you should provide the definition of illegitimate as well.

An unmarried father cannot be named on a childs birth certificate (in many other states as well) unless he signs an acknowledgement of paternity(hence claiming paternity of the child).

"Bastard" is an outdated term, and it's generally used to describe nasty people. I believe that babies are not illegitimate -- their parents are! Nowadays 70% of households in America are single mothers -- no husband around. That is a damn shame.
