Akon owns a South African diamond mine, but it was Lady Gaga who cemented his fortune, The Huffington Post reports.
"She's pretty much retired me," the singer said of Gaga, who is signed to his KonLive imprint at Interscope Records. "She was definitely a blessing. She came at the right moment. I'm glad I believed in her, boy. That goes to show you, if you believe in something strong enough, it will pay off."
Akon goes on to call Gaga a "super megastar" -- she's scored four consecutive top 10 singles, three consecutive #1 songs, and her breakout hit, 'Just Dance,' was the second-highest selling single of the last decade.
Akon's ability to retire and actually calling it quits are two different stories, however; his new album, 'Stadium Music,' is slated for release this year, with Gaga making a guest appearance. In December, Akon told New York Magazine he would have performed at GQ's Gentlemen's Ball for free if he'd been asked. Yet Akon commands $75,000 for a college performance, The Smoking Section reported yesterday. Akon also tells The Huffington Post that plans to promote his new record are ambitious: "We're going to do straight stadium tours overseas with this record," he says, adding that he plans to spearhead a feature film.
