Olympic Men's Figure Skating Fashion: The Good, The Bad and The Weir

For his short program at the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver on Tuesday, ice skater Johnny Weir busted out what can only be described as a men's corset. The black and pink number, so quintessentially Johnny, left us hungry for more Weir-ified outfits once the long program came around.
And it wasn't just Johnny's costume during his first skate that made our hearts flutter in anticipation. Italy's Samuel Contesti wore overalls, for cripes' sake. And Evan Lysacek -- who, coincidentally would win gold, as if that really matters -- plastered his body suit with feathers. If that doesn't get you going, what would?
Unfortunately, Johnny's second outfit left us underwhelmed. But it got worse from there.
Watching the men's free skate, it became bitterly apparent we were coming down from the high of day one. Gone were the overalls and skeleton outfits -- thank you, Kevin van der Perren -- and out came more subdued fashions.
There was one that looked like it came straight from the golf course (Czech Republic's Michal Brezina) and Jeremy Abbott simply donned what looked like pants and a shirt! Where was the glitter? Where was the whimsy? Clearly missing from the ice in Vancouver that night.
And don't get us started with Lysacek. We don't care if he's the Olympic champion, Olympic champions should know better. You can't wear the same outfit twice! (He didn't, but that's what it looked like -- see above.)
Apologies to silver medal winner, Evgeni Plushenko, who surely does not deserve our censure -- although his outfit, as one of our friends pointed out, looked like it was designed by a third grader. His Lite-Brite inspired attire gets mad props from us, even if his quad jump didn't from the judges. (Side note: Evan totally deserved the gold. His program looked prettier and he landed his jumps nicely. This is, of course, our expert opinion.)
Oh well. There's always Sochi in four years. Please don't let us down, men of the ice. We're counting on you.

I do think the male skaters should get back to more masculine outfits. A little glitz is okay, but feathers and fluff?? Some of the women's custumes are over the top, too - as are the pairs and ice dancing. To me, it detracts from the skating and I really hate seeing men dressed like women!! I don't like Evan's plastered down, greasy hair, either. And, he looks like he spends too much time in a tanning bed!? He is a wonderful skater, so why detract from that with the look of sleeze??

At first I thought Weir was Just weird but now I admire him after he stood up to PETA. I think he should have got a higher score yesterday . His performance was flawless. He dresses a little too femenine, but I guess he just wants to be different.

How much lower can you get than to make fun of a child (with down syndrome at that!). I understand that everyone should have a sense of humor- but!, the fact remains Tripp isn't even old enough to defend himself! Family Guy... you've hit an all time low! Pathetic.

OMG! Will I need to straighten ALL of your butts out? Is this forum always this nuts? Help, I've fallen in PopEater and I can't get out!!!!!
OK, Missy, here's the story you somehow missed. Nobody was making fun. The Downes Syndrome child (VOICE) was played by a REAL CHILD WHO HAS DOWNES SYNDROME and the child and family sanctioned the episode, otherwise they would not have had the child partake in it.
Yes, Evan wore a similar costume both times, but have you ~noticed~ the body that boy has on him? The all black look works on all that long strong gorgeousness.

Johnny Weir's costumes are really ugly! And if he designed them...then he ought to give up trying to be a fashion designer because his taste is really bad!! These skaters ought to employ the designers from "Dancing With The Stars". Those costumes are gorgeous!!

They are both amazing and Olympians now!
LINDA, I'm certain that with a little help your vision problems (... or is it LACK OF VISION?) might be helped by an opthamologist (that's an eye doctor.) :-)
On the other hand, if your eyesight is healthier than your INSIGHT, then you're obviously an idiot.
Those of us who travel within the FASHION CAPITALS OF THE WORLD (NYC, Paris, Milan, etc.) don't need help from some [LOLLLLL] "Dancing with lollll the Stars-watching simpleton. (Yikes, lolll, dancing with the stars, loll) But THANKS for the... ahem... ummmm... awwwe, just STFU,B!!!
p.s. Linda, our gay and bi spies have issued their reports; and, based on the photos therein, WE THINK THAT YOU'RE "UGLY."
I thought Evan and Johnny were awesome in every way! Love their skating and costumes!
