How Beyonce & Jay-Z Stay Off Celebrity Weeklies

Every week, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie peer back at us while we're busy loading our groceries. The celebrity weeklies constantly claim new, alleged breakups and makeups. Even Jon and Kate Gosselin's mugs were splashed on magazine covers almost every week last year after infidelity rumors surfaced in their relationship. But one power couple seems to be missing: Jay-Z and Beyonce. Why haven't they crossed over into the tabloid fodder just like every other famous celebrity couple?
Magazine editors weigh in on how the couple manages to keep a low profile on their private life and disclose the one move that could turn them into the next Brangelina.
Jay-Z and Beyonce's music transcends most mediums. A weekend night without hearing 'Run This Town' or 'Single Ladies' is almost unheard of. While everyone from Vogue and SELF have featured Sasha Fierce on their covers, the weeklies have left them alone. The pair even sit atop Forbes' list of Hollywood's Top-earning Couples for the second year in a row. The magazine calculates that between June 2008 and June 2009, the duo earned a combined $122 million. But aside from touring, selling albums and giving to charities close to their hearts, these two are off the tabloid radar.
There is no question that the pair is interesting, but they've managed to keep drama and even exclusive events (like their wedding) out of the public eye and are seemingly immune to weekly coverage. So what makes Jay-Z and Beyonce any different than Brangelina?
"Brad and Angelina live a very dramatic life, and the readers love to follow the soap opera of that drama. In comparison, Jay-Z and Beyonce live a much lower-key lifestyle. They don't have six kids, they don't visit war zones, they don't have high-profile ex-lovers, dark secrets or controversial scandals in their past," Dan Wakeford, editor-in-chief of
Life & Style Weekly tells PopEater.
Music's power couple have less appeal, only because they aren't stirring up drama and selling exclusive photos to the weekies like Brangelina have. "Brad and Angelina got together in a way that was scandalous -- on a movie set while he was still with Jennifer Aniston. There is something new every week, and people can't let it go. On the other hand, Beyonce and Jay-Z keep a very low profile and really don't have drama,"
Hollywood Life's Editor-in-Chief Bonnie Fuller tells
PopEater.
The issue of race was brought up in 2008 when Beyonce and Jay-Z tied the knot and little coverage was made in the media. According to a report by
NY Daily News, "a top tabloid editor tells me that Jay-Z and Beyoncé's wedding was played down by the weeklies because "African-Americans don't sell covers.'" And recently, PopEater's Rob Shuter noticed Tiger Woods got dumped from tabloid covers -- because his face allegedly wasn't selling magazines. "Only PEOPLE, whose cover featured a sad looking Mrs. Woods, sold well," he wrote (via
Huffington Post.)
But Wakeford said the magazine covers have more to with the stories themselves and not the people involved. "It's not always a case of whether a celebrity is big enough. Sometimes it's about the story being bigger than the star. With someone like Jon Gosselin, there was a lot of drama and a lot of story to tell. But there's less drama now and he's not making covers anymore."
"Beyonce and Jay-Z are music artists which traditionally have never excelled in sales for weekly magazines. Their stage personas are usually very different to that of a movie or TV star -- far less relatable," he adds.
Jay-Z and Beyonce have managed to avoid confrontation and stay out of the limelight, so perhaps there's not a big story to tell. But celebrity weeklies are standing by for a Beyonce and Jay-Z baby. "If and when Beyonce gets pregnant, that will heighten the interest in her," Fuller adds.

The answer is real simple: It IS race. Black faces don't sell magazines because black people don't read tabloid rags as much as white people do. Case closed.
Reply
you must be white because that's not true about us if you even go to baltimore md ther will be no more talboids left( i doubt it though) exactly soo shut it up about it !!! now case closed!!!
Exactly. AND black celebrities don't have has much stupid tabloid drama as white celebrities either.
who cares about race. JayZ is just too freakin ugly to put on any cover. Simple as that.
I 100% agree. Breanna, why so defensive, it was not a hit against your race; it's not like reading tabloids and worshiping celbs is a positive trait.
THATS CRAP!!!!!!!!!!!!
You have got to be kidding me it's about race?! Are you nuts?! First off black people look at as many " rags " as white people do but the point has been made why B & J aren't on the covers much; musicians rarely make rag covers, these two artists did not start their relationship in the midst of a bunch of drama and my own personal opinions are 1. because they know how to behave in public! You never see either of them stalking off in a huff after an argument ( never see them argue ) or red eyed and chatting about how the director of his last video got him high ( Brad's claim re Quentin Tarrentino during Inglorious Basterds filming ) and 2. Jay-Z can carry one scary looking " mean mug " when he's not smiling and given his money and power, I don't think any rag-mag is dumb enough to print some made up story insulting Miss B for fear of painful repercussions! Now stop trying to be a little racist and grow up! Next thing you'll be saying us white folks are the only ones who watch soap operas too, huh?
there just may be something to the race thing. you just DON'T see black celebrities with so much drama on those type of magazines.
@Breanna...i wouldn't be so quick to proclaim loudly and proudly that you read the rags just as much. just saying.
Devil's advocate -- maybe it is because black people who get their kids all the way to stardom teach them to stay out of the tabloids....just playing devil's advocate.
...You do realize that you use the word "race" wrong? It's the human race, not race by colors - color is variation. Race indicates that we can all interbreed. Dogs are a race - yet there are different variations of dogs. Cats are a race - yet there are different variations of cats. Why is it any different about humans?
Ugh, it annoys me that soooo many people have to link everything to "race!" Well, wake up and smell the flowers - we're all brothers and sisters, believe it or not! Why does everything have to depend on "race" in this world? It's the people who use the word "race" in the first place, be it "good" or "bad" that are more racist!
If I had my way, everything would be based on intelligence and quality of work, NOT looks, NOT stupidity, and certainly not "race."
Good for Beyonce and Jay-Z. They are two very talented people who have a real romantic relationship, and focus more on being artists than being celebrities. In this fame addicted society of reality star attention whores, it's nice to know that there are some good, down to earth people out in Hollywood.

Get your head out if your ass. These two are PHONY! therefore BORING! You must be a part of their camp. Otherwise, you're delusional.
Are u kidding? "Good"? people. Please, do some research about these two but be careful at what u might find. They are not being talked about in the press because they have the backing of those "in charge". Let them decide to go against that and see how fast the tabloids will trash them.
there are not any down to earth people in hollywood get your head out you a**
mintrubble71, I'm assuming you are needing some attention. The simple fact is they are NOT actors. They are relatable in the same way as seeing someone on the big screen. Also, I can't get away from Beyonce on the tv. Over exposure much? Product endorsement much? Go away! Please.

Can someone please tell me when we started saying things were different to other things instead of different from? Was there a memo I missed?

Kim pleeeeeeeeeeeeeez mama run don't walk to the nearest bookstore and buy yourself a dictionary. Or use spell check. It's horrifying to read a post so full of obviously misspelled words not just typos. It's clear you can't spell. Please lets not perpetuate the ignorant stereotype that blacks are not educated. I beg of you. It does a disservice to yourself and honestly Beyonce and Jay-Z as well. You know how quickly racist's want to slam labels on people of color. Lift yourself above the laziness. Take care.
Nicco PLEASE! Why you jammin' Miss Kim in Jersey? Does punctuation count as well? "Racists"(plural), not "racist's"(possessive). Quit throwing stones! You make racists of all colors appear ignorant!
To Nico,
Last I checked, pleeeeeeeeeeeeeez wasn't a word. So leave Kim alone. It's just the internet, relax.
