Johnny Depp Pleads For Justice in Murder Trial

You may expect
Johnny Depp to be busy promoting his foray into 'Wonderland,' but the A-list actor has a bigger cause to champion: justice. Depp will appear on CBS's '48 Hours Mystery' on Saturday to advocate the release of the "West Memphis Three," young men convicted in 1994 of murdering three boys during a satanic ritual.
Depp is not alone in his belief that the men were convicted on flimsy or fabricated evidence. He joins stars like Eddie Vedder, Winona Ryder, the Dixie Chicks and Disney teen star Demi Lovato in insisting the men were actually found guilty for their fascination with heavy-metal music, Stephen King and the occult.
"I firmly believe Damien Echols, Jason Baldwin and Jessie Misskelley are totally innocent. It was a need for swift justice to placate the community," Depp says on Saturday's show. "Damien Echols is on death row to be killed by lethal injection."
The appearance of the 'Alice in Wonderland' star shocked CBS staffers, who told
the NY Post: "Johnny Depp on '48 Hours' -- are you joking?"
The segment will highlight DNA and forensic evidence that many hope will finally clear Echols, Baldwin and Misskelley of the crimes. The show also suggests that juror misconduct contributed to the guilty verdict, the NY Post reports.
The West Memphis Three were tried and convicted of the murders of three eight-year-old boys in the Robin Hood Hills area of West Memphis, Arkansas in 1993. Claims that police bungled the gathering of evidence, compromised the crime scene, ignored possible suspects and misplaced DNA samples are behind the controversy that has spanned nearly two decades.
Damien Echols was sentenced to death. Jessie Misskelley, Jr., was sentenced to life in prison plus 40 years and Jason Baldwin was sentenced to life imprisonment. All three were teenagers at the time of their arrests. Two documentaries aired on HBO, 'Paradise Lost: The Child Murders at Robin Hood Hills' and 'Paradise Lost 2: Revelations', explored evidence suggesting that the three men were wrongly convicted.
Depp's appearance is not the first star-powered effort to free the trio. In 2002, Henry Rollins produced the album 'Rise Above: 24 Black Flag Songs to Benefit the West Memphis Three,' a collection of cover songs originally performed by Rollins' band Black Flag. Rollins donated profits from the record and the supporting tour to the suspects' defense funds.

In 2003, Winona Ryder hosted a benefit exhibition at a Los Angeles art gallery, featuring artwork by Raymond Pettibon, Shepard Fairey and Marilyn Manson. Though Ryder herself was convicted of grand theft and vandalism in a 2002 trial, she was unconcerned with the public's reaction to her support.
"I'm sure there's going to be a lot of jokes," Ryder told
USA TODAY at the time. "To me, [my case] has nothing to do with the other. It is incomparable. I am not in prison. I am not on death row. I did not in any way experience what these guys have experienced. They are in my hearts every day, and I will never give up until they're out."
During the gallery opening ceremony, Ryder announced her belief that the verdicts of the West Memphis Three were based on "rumors, prejudices and superstitions," and called for DNA testing and new trials.
Last month, 'Sonny With a Chance' star Lovato tweeted her support of the ongoing cause. She wrote, "Can everyone just take a second to read this please.
www.wm3.org A truly worthwhile cause. Show your support!!!"
Minutes later, she added, "FREE THE WEST MEMPHIS THREE!!!"
Depp's appearance on '48 Hours Mystery' airs Saturday, Feb. 27 at 10 p.m.

interesting phenomenon, how movie star, singer, non-lawyer outsiders
decide guilt or innocence? based on what? the say-so of the defendants and their lawyers? think I'd rather trust trial and appeal system overall. are ways to present new evidence claims, etc. and the notion that law enforcement often just grabs somebody to placate the public is just pretty archaic thinking.

Actually Bob, the story states, if you read it, that they have DNA evidence that could clear them. DNA results have been clearing people that have been in prison for decades recently and it is a good thing if DNA can prove these people innocent.
Actually, an in depth investigative report (MSNBC, I believe) showed that the prosecution's case rested primarily on the "confession" forced out of a mentally handicapped teen with an IQ of 64. The videotaped interviews don't at all mask that the kid was led in his testimony. There was not a shred of physical or forensic evidence linking these boys to the crime scene (a wooded area by a dry creek bed). Their only crime was a fascination with Death Metal music and the occult. A stark contrast to the ultra Fundamentalist Christian society which surrounded them in West Memphis, Arkansas. I applaud that someone with means to be heard has taken up their cause, because the non-profits have made no headway all these years.
Yes, how do these people get this information that is better than the justice system? Do they hire investigators, psychics, or what? And what makes them so sure they are right and know anything at all about the topic? Yet they're so quick to butt in.
Actually Bob, it's always amazing to me how quick we are to kill another human being (but I'm sure the UNborn are your priority) when there may be serious doubt as to their guilt. Just because someone has been convicted does not necessarily mean the jury heard all the evidence, the prosecutors didn't withhold exculpatory evidence from the defense and that other influences didn't sway a jury from the truth. I would rather err on the side of caution than to send innocent people to their death. What does it hurt to be certain? If DNA evidence proves their guilty then what harm has been done? If it proves them innocent, it has saved three humans from being sacrificed by an inperfect judicial system that has a long history of condemning innocent people.
Actually if you took the time you'd see all the info, trial info, evidence, etc is posted on the web. IF you took the time to familiarize yourself with the information BEFORE passing judgment you'd see you are VERY VERY wrong....
I have been following this case for years, I am outraged the legal system in Arkansas is able to get away with what they are doing.
If they have evidence to clear them let the evidence clear them. I believe it is arrogant for a movie star to think just because they speak out that they speak the truth. And I would absolutely not want the dixie chicks speaking for me.
The right to persue happiness ! Johnny is very intelligent ;and nodoubt has investigated this cause and found it to be noble and worthy of his effort, which he enjoys bestowing . Personally I think it is very cool that volunteerism is a part of Mr Depps life,it reflects his good nature .To those of you who throw a stone at Depp or any person doing a kind deed for another humane,it is a reflection of your soul
To lawdawg - that's the point, they can't get the judicial system to give them a re-trial with the DNA evidence. I don't find it arrogant at all of Johnny Depp, if he was a nobody, we wouldn't even be reading this story. The whole point is to make people aware of what is being done to these three. And I think if you were innocent and sitting on death row since you were a teenager, now awaiting lethal injection, you would want anyone and everyone to try and help you - even the Dixie Chicks.
Hey Bob-Oh Buddy Boy, guess what, the "Justice" systems screws up ALL the time. Can you say EVIDENCE? It must be kinda nice living in your perfect, happy world. But out here in the real world we know mistakes can and do happen. And sometimes the innocently convicted do get the justice they deserve. Most of the time they don't. And they "whine" all the way down death roll. Hope your lil' ol' prefect shiny happy bubble world never bursts ...and finds you on the wrong side of justice Bob-Oh!
Ok,Ok,Ok... Celebs aside... if the boy's/men are guilty... what is it going to hurt to introduce the DNA evidence??
I'm just sayin'.
Right you are! Aren't these some of the same people that are fighting for rapist Roman Polanski?
yeah i know..they always seem to find these weirdo cases that are a 'cause' based on rather vaporous ideas and nebulous fact.
Actually Bob thats how it does work in most large cities. If you are robbed or mugged the police take you back to the station to look thru a mug shot book and ask you to pick them out, if they see you are haveing trouble they will point to one and ask you several times if this is the one? As soon as you say I think so they close the book and go get that one. Whether he did that particular crime or not he's in that book for a reason and now they can get that one of the street. That's life, get used to it..
Bob, you sound like you might be the typical prosecutor, always clinging desperately to a previous conviction, never willing to admit there might be a mistake, even in spite of new evidence which might tend to exonerate the convicted. It goes on all the time in this country, and appears likely it may be ocurring with the Memphis Three. Sometimes, Prosecutor Bob, even movie stars, singers, and non-lawyer types can smell a rotten fish when it's laid before them.
I would agree if the judicial system wasn't so flawed. LOL
Mission Statement that is set by the district attorneys office usually says convict all guilty. So that they don't miss any guilty people the tone set is charge everyone and get a conviction. Even when charges are dropped or no supporting evidence " Get a conviction" is the theme of the day. This produces revenue and justifies budget for the following year keeping them all employed wether they do a thorough job or not LOL
Lawdawg: "If they have evidence to clear them let the evidence clear them. I believe it is arrogant for a movie star to think just because they speak out that they speak the truth. And I would absolutely not want the dixie chicks speaking for me."
Boy you said it. I can't stand those arrogant entertainers who think they're opinion is right just because they're celebrities. You know, like Rush Limbaugh and Glenn Beck. Those douche-bags should keep their idiotic opinions to themselves. Seriously, though, since when are actors not allowed to have opinions? Since most of them are liberal, I guess. But there are plenty of conservative actors. I have a feeling that when the conservative ones express their opinions, your reaction is very different. But that's because you're a small-minded hypocritical dumbass. Not that any of us are surprised.
First of all, it sounds like to me you might have a little bit of anomosity because someone is willing to help these young men. Does it really make a difference who it is that is willing to help these young men. Sometimes it takes a person whith some clout to get things done around this country. There are plenty of people who have been wrongly convicted and found innocent due to the new technology with forensics. If I were in there shoes and I knew that I was innocent I would thank God that there are people out there willing to help no matter who they are. Don't HATE! What people need to do is quit passing judgement.
Have you seen "Paradise Lost" or "Paradise Lost 2"? I have seen both, and I am also convinced these young men are innocent. I'm glad someone with some clout has taken an interest, because otherwise they would have been forgotten.
And you'd trust a lawyer because.....?
