John Mayer has been losing friends right and left this month, following a controversial (and arguably racist) interview in Playboy wherein the singer graphically discusses Jessica Simpson, Jennifer Aniston and his "white supremacist" private parts. What better way to regain fans' love than with the help of an 11-year-old boy?
New Jersey sixth-grader Austin Christy attended John's Sunday night concert in Philadelphia with a sign reading "Can I play 'Belief' with you?" -- and when Mayer spotted Christy in the crowd, he invited the youngster onstage to do just that, reports CourierPostOnline.com.
Christy played for a crowd of roughly 25,000 fans and left with a guitar signed by the rocker himself, reading: "To Austin, You rock. Keep playing. See you at your show."
"I was really excited. I was thinking that it wasn't real," Christy said after the show, adding that he's a fan of Mayer because "his music is different than all the other artists. A lot of them are R&B and hip-hop. He's like a combination of pop and blues."
The duet received thunderous applause, and Mayer told the audience, "That's my man," indicating Christy.
"I said I was a big fan, and he said back to me he could tell," Christy said in the interview. "I thought it was pretty cool because a lot of other artists wanted to play with him and he picked an 11-year-old out of a lot of better artists."
Christy's mother wrote a note to John's management team, which read: "John made an 11-year-old's dream come true. John gave him the guitar after the show and we needed security to get out of the stadium."
"Everyone wanted a picture with [my son]. If you get a chance, watch some of the videos on You Tube, it is touching. As John said, 'The kid pulled through.' I just wanted to thank JM for pulling through for Austin."
Mayer, who has been uncharacteristically absent from Twitter since his Playboy debacle, posted a new message after the show: "8 out of 8 band members agree, Philly is always an awesome show. XO J."

Green Day does this at all of their shows, or at least the 4 that I have been to. They invite 3 audience members on stage to play bass, drums, and guitar for one song.
Let's see, he says something uncalled for in an interview, pisses off many many people and all of a sudden does something wonderful and everyone believes it and he's a great guy. As long as people continue to be gullible, they will believe stories like this. This was obviously staged. I bet the kid and his family got paid a lot of money. John is more of a jerk then before.
definitely sounds rigged..have always been a fan of his music ..as a person not so much.. looks like he needs to shower..this was an obvious ploy to gain back the public's respect for him..what a douche..
It takes a child to break through all the garbage and let John know that he does have fans that still love him - do not agree with him, but still love him. That's what fans to! People are extremely critical and attack in packs like wolves, whenever a person says or does things that may not be appropriate or even ethical. Unfortunately, we are all human and will continue to do and say stupid things. Go, John!
He's darling, Austin's darling...it's age, wisdom, experience...and all arrive at different times for different people. Ease off, and say a prayer instead of criticizing!!!
From sex-crazed,arrogant,bordering on racist, loudest mouth in the country,to friend of the children, trying to create warm and fuzzy moments. This was obviously staged and I dislike him even more now for trying to patronize the intellectual public. I could care less how much talent the guy has- he washed it all away with his ego.
Why don't all you critical stiff-necks give it a break. He's had a lot of success and fame and yes, some of it has gone to hid head. Everyone wants to interview him and he said some dumb stuff, so what? Haven't you ever said something wrong on the spur of the moment and then wished you hadn't? Why be so hard on the guy? His music is wonderful; he's very talented and I'm willing to give him a break and hope he gets himself back together and continues producing the great music. Quit trying to destroy him just for something he said.
