John Mayer has been losing friends right and left this month, following a controversial (and arguably racist) interview in Playboy wherein the singer graphically discusses Jessica Simpson, Jennifer Aniston and his "white supremacist" private parts. What better way to regain fans' love than with the help of an 11-year-old boy?
New Jersey sixth-grader Austin Christy attended John's Sunday night concert in Philadelphia with a sign reading "Can I play 'Belief' with you?" -- and when Mayer spotted Christy in the crowd, he invited the youngster onstage to do just that, reports CourierPostOnline.com.
Christy played for a crowd of roughly 25,000 fans and left with a guitar signed by the rocker himself, reading: "To Austin, You rock. Keep playing. See you at your show."
"I was really excited. I was thinking that it wasn't real," Christy said after the show, adding that he's a fan of Mayer because "his music is different than all the other artists. A lot of them are R&B and hip-hop. He's like a combination of pop and blues."
The duet received thunderous applause, and Mayer told the audience, "That's my man," indicating Christy.
"I said I was a big fan, and he said back to me he could tell," Christy said in the interview. "I thought it was pretty cool because a lot of other artists wanted to play with him and he picked an 11-year-old out of a lot of better artists."
Christy's mother wrote a note to John's management team, which read: "John made an 11-year-old's dream come true. John gave him the guitar after the show and we needed security to get out of the stadium."
"Everyone wanted a picture with [my son]. If you get a chance, watch some of the videos on You Tube, it is touching. As John said, 'The kid pulled through.' I just wanted to thank JM for pulling through for Austin."
Mayer, who has been uncharacteristically absent from Twitter since his Playboy debacle, posted a new message after the show: "8 out of 8 band members agree, Philly is always an awesome show. XO J."

I recently met Mayer before all this mess happened. He spent about 20 minutes after a show talking to fans and taking pictures. He didn't have to do that as it was a big show and most artists do not do that. He was nice to everyone. Three days later the media frenzy exploded. I will always think highly of John and his music. As a fan, I am sure this experience in his life will bring us some more great music.
What a shame I couldn't have whispered in that boy's ear and asked him to request that Mayer keep his mouth shut except for singing, eating, and talking to friends--off the record.
John is a sad man. Its bad enough us women had to endure fools like him back in high school. Hes a jackazz that deserves no women and one day ( i have a feeling) hes going to actually be grateful and sad about the few good ones he had. My advice to him is "hush your mouth" truely only the desperate fools wanna hear your secrets. I once loved his music however i have tossed what i've bought and will not purchase or listen again. Just bc the way he treats women. My 3 daughters are discusted by him, his remarks and the way hes conducted himself. Maybe one day he'll realize everyone gets older, loves honesty , and maybe he should of took a lesson from an older women on how to do that. Shame on him and shame on anyone that gives him the time of the day until he grows up.
Unfortunately, us as people need to get a life and look inward to ourselves before we criticizing people. Usually one who criticizing the most is one who has a lot to think about himself or herself.
John Mayer has talent and does not appear to carry a gun. So to all you self rightous judgemental people, as you go to church for easter (one of your twice a year visits) make sure you check out what god says about judging others. Everything he said was a lot less in the long run than what those women he dates have to say. Do you know him or what?
His music is booring and he's a Tool . He probably has'nt got laid since that interview and needed to redo his image to get the girls to line up again . You people who defend his behavior need to watch " Tool Academy " on VH1 and take notes ...
John Mayer should be Black Balled in the Entertainment world just as you did all the African American Entertainers and athletes who has done something un justifiable ... equality is something everyone should stand by he is with out a doubt a Pig and Racist screw you John Mayer and I will use my influence to Black Ball you Pig.....
The Playboy interview was deplorable. John Mayer appears to be too in love with himself and his psyche to ever show interest in another human being, lol. Nobody could give him the love the way he gives it to himself. I've had the ill experience of meeting John Mayer in Atlanta before he "made it big" and he was a jerk then and an ever bigger d**k now! He screwed his duo mate back in the day to make a deal with the devil and now it's his turn to pay the piper. If you read the article closely he is apparently above everyone else on earth. And, not once did he mention playing music because it was in his soul or an extension of his being. No ... it was all about monetary, or primal gain. That is not the make a true musician and neither is he! I hope his ego has finally swallowed his brain and he has stuck his foot so far to the back of his throat that we will never have to hear from him or is 'tweet' beat again!
what in the hell is everyone so mad at him for? lol I mean seriously...did he really say a word you never in your life utter? Or..maybe perhaps..you're just two faced and you won't admit it, I say the latter...
This was very cool, my son plays I would love for someone like John Mayer to do something like for him!
awww man it must suck to be him right about now. He will never live this down...EVER. gee, I wonder how it feels to know that a WHOLE RACE hates you? what a tool
u are really dumb if you think for one second that this wasn't a pub. stunt.....wow. and it wasn't a very good stunt cuz tha kid should have been black.

I love that you would take the time to pay attention to a young fan that loves music.
