Jon Voight: 'I've Been Waiting So Long To Hug My Grandchildren'

After a years-long estrangement from his daughter, Jon Voight spent a weekend in Venice with Angelina Jolie's family -- and the veteran actor says the family outing was just what he was hoping for. "It was just wonderful to spend time with Angelina and Brad and the children," Voight tells RadarOnline.com. "I've been waiting so long to hug my grandchildren and it was amazing, they are the most beautiful, loving kids you could imagine and I'm not just saying that because I'm their grandfather, they really are something special."

"Angelina and Brad are so happy together and they are the most amazing, loving parents I've ever seen. It truly moved me to see how Angie is as a mom, I am so proud of her -- she has so much love to give and to share with the children and with Brad."

Jolie and her father parted ways in 2001 when Voight made a television appearance stating that his daughter needed help for "her serious mental problems."

In 2002, Jolie stated, "My father and I don't speak. I don't hold any anger toward him. I don't believe that somebody's family becomes their blood. Because my son's adopted, and families are earned."

Though their reconciliation has shocked some, Voight says it's been a work-in-progress for months. "Angie and I have been in contact on the phone and by e-mail for some time now. We've been working towards a full reconciliation for a while. Angie had to feel it was the right time to bring me into the lives of her and the kids and after some work she decided the moment had arrived."

Voight admits that Jolie is in the driver's seat when it comes to his exposure to her children, but he's optimistic. "I hope I get to see them again soon," Voight says. "I want to spend as much time with them as possible."

Jon is back pedaling now,wanting to stay in his daughters good graces.But,If I had a kid that wore someone elses blood around their neck and displayed other odd behaviors I would be a little concerned myself.I think it went alot deeper than just telling the press she had mental problems.Maybe from him leaving their mother ??????????????

I had the privilege of meeting Mr Voight at a Blockbuster Convention in 1999. He didn't just sign your picture and move on to the next fan like others I met, we actually chatted for about 5 minutes and that left a lifelong impression that not all film people are the same.

Remember, Jon is an old man now and no matter how great looking you are when you are young, we all lose a lot with age. He was a hunk in his Midnight Cowboy days and many females and a few males were creaming their jeans over him then. Good luck to them.

Every parent makes mistakes. The difference here is that they are both trying to rebuild a relationship, not just for themselves, but for the grandchildren. That makes the difference between just worring about"ME", and trying to worry about "WE" as a family. Good luck to them all.
