Jon Voight: 'I've Been Waiting So Long To Hug My Grandchildren'

After a years-long estrangement from his daughter, Jon Voight spent a weekend in Venice with Angelina Jolie's family -- and the veteran actor says the family outing was just what he was hoping for. "It was just wonderful to spend time with Angelina and Brad and the children," Voight tells RadarOnline.com. "I've been waiting so long to hug my grandchildren and it was amazing, they are the most beautiful, loving kids you could imagine and I'm not just saying that because I'm their grandfather, they really are something special."

"Angelina and Brad are so happy together and they are the most amazing, loving parents I've ever seen. It truly moved me to see how Angie is as a mom, I am so proud of her -- she has so much love to give and to share with the children and with Brad."

Jolie and her father parted ways in 2001 when Voight made a television appearance stating that his daughter needed help for "her serious mental problems."

In 2002, Jolie stated, "My father and I don't speak. I don't hold any anger toward him. I don't believe that somebody's family becomes their blood. Because my son's adopted, and families are earned."

Though their reconciliation has shocked some, Voight says it's been a work-in-progress for months. "Angie and I have been in contact on the phone and by e-mail for some time now. We've been working towards a full reconciliation for a while. Angie had to feel it was the right time to bring me into the lives of her and the kids and after some work she decided the moment had arrived."

Voight admits that Jolie is in the driver's seat when it comes to his exposure to her children, but he's optimistic. "I hope I get to see them again soon," Voight says. "I want to spend as much time with them as possible."

Why is he in the media with this? Why is he backing down from his original position? She is weird and I wouldn't deal with her even to get to see my grandchildren...and I love my grandchildren! I do not think that by allowing her dictatorship to run his life that he is helping her. Being a Grandparent I cannot imagine not being able to see my g'kids. It would break my heart. I am not perfect but older & wiser & maybe that's what Jolie finally realized.

This is how I see it... Angie is setting herself up before the separation. She's pulling her father back in on her side, He(Jon) has always wanted to reconcile with Angie that he runs to her when she calls. Angie knows he'll start talking again when the split occurs. She needs her dad to talk to the media about how wonderful a mom she is(he's already talking). She definately cant be having him tell the media, after the split, that she's still crazy and still needs help. The inevitable split will occur and Angie is preparing for that. And Brad is proudly thinking right now that he was responsible for their reunion. Well he is kinda under her plan. Let's see what happens. Brad will be looking really dumb.
