The word on the street is that Betty White will, at least partially, be on 'Saturday Night Live' ... though not in the hosting role that many had hoped. With a major Facebook push to thank, the concept of Betty White hosting 'SNL' is a great one on paper, but the logistics of it actually happening are a little more complicated. While we're confident she's enough of a consummate pro to pull off a full show -- and she's certainly funny/cool/hip enough, as well -- it's just better off that she isn't hosting a full episode. Our explanation after the jump. The concept of teaming White with Tina Fey, Molly Shannon and Amy Poehler is a good one, though, some obviously don't agree. See, it's fun, as in this case, to champion a grassroots, Internet movement to have the now 88-year-old White host 'SNL.' But that doesn't always mean it's 100 percent thought out. Hosting 'SNL' is not just a 90 minutes show. It's an intense, week-long marathon of pitches, rehearsals, last-minute changes and lightning-quick costume changes.
There are time-consuming pitch meetings on Monday and Tuesday -- followed by an all-night writing session (the host is spared from the all-nighter). On Wednesday, read-throughs begin, which includes a meeting with the host on what sketches will make it and which will be cut. Rehearsals start on Thursday, as well as filming a series of promotional commercials. Friday is met with more rehearsing along with costuming. And, keep in mind, 'SNL' cast members don't memorize their lines. It's all read off cue-cards because of all the last-second changes. There is a special skill to doing this. It's what makes Alec Baldwin and Jon Hamm great hosts and what makes Robert De Niro -- a magnificent actor -- a lesser 'SNL' host.
Then, on Saturday, more rehearsing and a full 90-minute dress rehearsal -- filmed in front of a live studio audience -- and then, finally(!), the live show Saturday night.
Look, I'm a huge fan of 'Saturday Night Live.' I've read every book on the market and have interviewed several cast members. I had no idea how intense a live episode actually was until I witnessed it with my own eyes.
It was early 2009 and I had just done a piece on, at the time, first-year featured player Bobby Moynihan. Bobby -- honestly, one of the nicest guys you will ever meet in entertainment -- invited me backstage for a taping of an episode that featured Tracy Morgan as the host. I knew it was a hectic scene, but I could have never imagined the intensity on display. What you see on screen, the set, is the most serene aspect of the studio. The surprisingly small hallways are littered with, well ... just about everything and everyone you can think of: Costumes, props, make-up technicians, random celebrities (Bill Paxton?) and people like me, who just totally get in the way.
At one point, halfway through the show, I passed host Tracy Morgan on the stairwell that connects the two floors that make up the 'SNL' studio and dressing rooms. Or, I should say, I had to clear the way as two assistants were almost carrying him to his next costume change. Morgan -- a (at the time) 40 year-old man that might be described as a "human dynamo" -- appeared exhausted. And remember, this is just the crescendo of a week that involved six full days of preparation. Would that be too much for an 88-year-old White? Perhaps. At least 'SNL' producers fear that it might be -- there is precedent.
If White does wind up co-hosting, she would set a record as the oldest host by 8 years. Two 80-year-olds have hosted the show: Miskel Spillman hosted 'SNL' on December 17, 1977, as part of its 'Anybody Can Host' contest, and earlier that year, Ruth Gordon -- from 'Every Which Way But Loose' -- also hosted. So, while it can be done, it's debatable whether either of those episodes would be classified as memorable.
As much as the world loves Betty White -- and we are included! -- the idea of her hosting 'Saturday Night Live' by herself only sets her up to fail. Having her host with Fey, Shannon and Poehler, however, sets her up to succeed -- and leave us all wanting more.

I think she should co-hosts because her co-hosts are better writers than anyone SNL has on roster. With them working with White, she would get the caliber show she deserves.

I'm 90 and I think Betty is HOT!!!. She definitely can hold her own. As for you Mike, even if you did have some help in writing articles you still could not hold your own. You should be fired for such horrible writing.
writers for AOL are washed up bozo's who can't get a real jouralism job...so what the HELL do they know other than the enquirer is GOSPEL

Is this a dumb story or what? What's with AOL and Betty White anyway?

I know, it's like they have a boner for her...in related news, Boner is dead. They tried to revive him with Viagara but it just didn't work this time!
I agree. This story is so moronic; I stopped reading after two paragraphs. What is wrong with AOL? Half the stories and 'news' articles are just so vapid.
I hate the fact that everything is READ!! That is why I lost interest in the show. Betty White would be great if she could memorize her lines...she would suck at reading the lines!
Betty White is awsome.....and this post is for fans of hers that care.....she's 88 years old, and we want as much of her as we can get, but we don't want her wearing herself thin trying to make us all happy. If she hosts SNL, partially or the whole taping....it will be an instant classic. That much wit and humor from all theses talented women together......hard not to want her the whole show.
I think she should host. Mike, I think you are discriminating against her because of her age (ageism). She has been an actor ( and a professional) for many years and probably would not sign on for the job unless she felt she was prepared for it.

I firmly agree, her age, though past what many may consider, is far fetched for sucess probably isn't a factor for a wonderful show. She has proven time and time again that being older than the normal trends is not a surpresing factor. If she feels she's up to it and the producers work with the logistics of her abilities adn talents it WILL be a great SNL. I am one who has fallen from the 'every' Saturday night viewer because it's not the same as it's quality years....But I WILL be watching when Betty is there!!
I agree...Betty White is very capable of doing SNL as host. Please don't let her age keep her from the show. She is a fabulous actor and can hold her own with all those "young things"
SNL has been so lame in the past few years that they need all the help that they can get. Many years ago when the show first came on I would rarely miss a show now I rarely watch a show because the writers are so "out to lunch". Occasionally they will try to revive some old jokes but even that does not work. I realize that Betty White is probably a lot older than the average viewer but she continues to have a phenomenal sense of humor.

You are so right, I couldn't say it much better. The show has more or less sucked for a long time, since I've been watching it for over 25 years, much less the last 15. Dear god, add an actual actress as a host that can pull off real humor? While I was out last night I did see washed up J-lo's fat ass, ummm talent!!!!
shs is too frickin old..............

Betty White isn't too old....for ANYTHING! The lady is phenominal. Everything she does is funny and classy. And like a previous writer said, SNL hasn't exactly been the greatest show the last several years, except for Tina Fey, Alec Baldwin and Amy Poller, who are great. I'll bet the ratings would skyrocket if Betty White was to host.
And you are too frickin' stupid. So what's your point?
And you, mistkahl, are too frickin' stupid.
And you'll REALLY apreciate it when you reach that age and someone says that about YOU!
This is most polite, considerate, and thoughtful example of agism that I might ever see. The waste of my time was a bonus.
