CBS Eyeing Anderson Cooper for Katie Couric's Job?
By PopEater Staff Posted Mar 1st 2010 10:01AM
In mid-2011, Katie Couric's five-year contract at CBS News will expire, and network executives appear to be exploring a "Plan B" if she departs after her oft-rocky tenure in the anchor's chair. According to the New York Times, that backup plan could very well be CNN host Anderson Cooper, who reportedly met with CBS execs months ago about anchor opportunities at the network.

However, a spokesperson for CNN denies a meeting ever occurred and claim in a statement to EW that Cooper "is not engaged in any additional conversations with them beyond those necessary for his continuing role on 60 Minutes."
Whether Cooper's reported meeting with CBS execs means he is being courted for Couric's job is unclear; he was previously pursued to host the network's 'Early Show,' which has struggled in the ratings. A switch to CBS full-time would be an easy one for Cooper, who is a regular contributor to '60 Minutes.'
Cooper joined CNN in 2001 and has hosted his own show, 'Anderson Cooper 360,' since 2003. He specializes in covering tragedies, including Hurricane Katrina and the recent the earthquake in Haiti.
'360' has not exactly been a ratings boon for CNN and generally ranks third in the 10 PM hour behind FOX's Greta Van Susterein and HLN's Nancy Grace. Often, repeats of MSNBC's Keith Olbermann will edge Cooper out as well. His focus on delivering the news -- and not opinion -- has been cited by industry analysts for his viewership.
Couric's ratings have not changed much either, and she currently ranks behind NBC's Brian Williams and ABC's Diane Sawyer in the evening news race. As we noted in an earlier piece, CBS may be looking to bring down costs in the newsroom due to the economic downturn.
Couric reportedly makes $15 million a year.
NBC's Brian Williams -- who almost permanently holds the top spot among the nightly network news broadcasts -- makes $10 million a year and pulls in, on average, over 3 million more viewers, averaging around 10 million viewers to Couric's 6.5-7 million.
CBS had no comment when asked by the Times, but it is not uncommon for TV stars to take meetings with other networks in the run-up to contract negotiations.

Live and let live is my motto!
I "like" Anderson, and nothing against Couric. except she doesn't fit in as a news anchor.Should have stayed where she was.

lets see, replace a leftist with dismal ratings with a leftist with dismal ratings,...yeah, that ought to fix the problem. I guess CBS has to pick from the bottom of the barrel since the cream of the crop went to FOX News, that must be why late night rebroadcasts on FOX still bury Cooper in the ratings.
So, one old queen replaces another! Big Deal!
aNDERSON COOPER WOULD BE GREAT AND WOULD WIPE OUT ALL OTHER NEWS PROGRAMS
you are right she have stayed in the morning program,it was to watch the energy she put into it.but it's her choice and we have to let happen the way it must.
WELL, I AM SURE SOME ONE WILL FIND A SPOT FOR THIS "FRUIT FLY" TO PLY HIS TRADE.

Now there is a person I would switch channels for. Love Anderson Cooper, now I switch between Diane and Brian.

Personally, I'd love to see Cooper replace the truculent, phonier-than-thou Couric. I might even start watching CBS news again.

I agree with you that Anderson is much better than Couric. She's not credible and I don't like watching her.
Truculent? You don't even know the meaning of the word.l
I totally agree. I would watch Anderson any time.
LOVE LOVE Anderson Cooper. Katie has great interview talents and belongs back on TODAY. I am devoted to Brian and Brokaw when they let him out! BUT......I'd go with Anderson at least 50% of the time!!!
Oh Tom, Tom, Tom...stand down. She is truculent and you sir are an impotent turd of a little man.
We don't need gay boy on there.
Yes,Yes to Anderson Cooper. He is smart, handsome and would be a big plus to the evening news

LOVE Anderson. (Especially when he subs for Regis and is on with Kelly.)He is so sweet and kind of goofy,in a good way.
He is too much of an Newsman to sit behind the desk at his young age. But I would watch him every night if he took over the desk.

"At his young age"? How old do you think he is? It is stretching the imagination to think he is "young". To me, "young" means under 30.
I dont watch the nightly propaganda shows at all . I have had a glimpse of Couric . She seems fine for the job . I hope she gets a big cash settlement if they drop her .
I never cared much for her as a celebrity .

As much as I have always admired Couric's interviewing skills, if CBS and Couric decide to go in another direction, I'd love to see Cooper in the job. He'd be the first openly gay man anchor of a major network. Hey! They made Katie the first sole woman anchor, why not now expand their horizons for a a gay man?! Right on, CBS!

She has NO skills.....she HAS to be controversial so that she can get some attention. She does not have the skills, that let's say Kronkite, Rather, Gibson, or even Williams has. She is a news READER and during interviews a 'prepared' questions asker from someone else......certainly NOT her own thoughts!
