Katy Perry Not Feeling Blue About New Smurf Role

Singer Katy Perry will be featured in a film based on the 'Smurfs.' Perry is in negotiations to voice the role of Smurfette, one of those huggably blue creatures created by Belgian cartoonist Pierre Culliford in 1958, reports Variety. Others attached to the project include Neil Patrick Harris from 'How I Met Your Mother' and British actor Alan Cumming.

The movie will combine live-action footage with animation and is set to be released in 2011. Raja Gosnell, who worked as an editor on 'Pretty Woman,' 'Mrs. Doubtfire' and 'Home Alone,' is set to direct. He also previously directed both 'Scooby-Doo' films and 'Big Momma's House' starring Martin Lawrence.

Katy Perry, 25, has recorded the mega-hits 'Hot N Cold,' 'Waking Up in Vegas' and 'I Kissed a Girl.' She is currently engaged to British comedian and provocateur Russell Brand.

The Smurf phenomenon grew out of a popular TV series from the 1980s. The characters were known for their blue skin, white hats and mushroom houses. They have recently marched back to prominence in combination with the sci-fi blockbuster 'Avatar.' One online critic called the highest-grossing movie of all time 'Dancing with Smurfs.'
