Party Plans Ruined by the Cablevision-ABC Feud, One Oscar Fan Comes Up with Plan B
PopEater and Moviefone reached out to Cablevision customers left out in the cold after ABC was taken off the air during a contract dispute. Just what happened to their Oscar party plans? One frustrated movie fan shares his story. And no, that's not Art to the left, but probably what he felt like earlier today. Note: ABC returned to the air shortly after the beginning of the awards.
Spring is in the air and the seemingly-unending New York winter finally begins to thaw. But even as people move outdoors, one event draws friends and family to the comfort of living rooms all across America:
The Academy Awards. Every year, my friends and I gather at my place to watch the drama of the year's best awards show of the year unfold.
Friends usually arrive hours before the show begins with food in hand for our annual potlock. This year, however, is different. As a Cablevision subscriber, news of a possible blackout left me reeling. I was completely disinterested in the politics of the whole situation; I just wanted to know what I was going to do about the party. Plans had been made months in advance for this event. When the ABC blackout became official, Plan A was officially thrown out the window. As someone who prides themselves in quick thinking and problem-solving, I had to come up with a plan B fast.
I quickly picked up the phone and called friends and family who subscribed to some other cable or satellite service, wondering if they would be willing to host the party. Unfortunately the idea of a hosting a last minute Oscars party was not appealing to them. I found no takers. After a few hours of pondering, the proverbial light bulb illuminated in my head; what about visiting a local, low key, watering hole?
After calling around to a few local establishments, I was able to reserve two tables at a local bar that promised me that the focus of the evening would be on the awards show. So all is well with the world. A group of 8 friends and I will be visiting a local bar equipped with multiple 60-inch plasma TVs to watch the Academy Awards. Plan B for the show may even be better than the original. Now we can have someone else prepare food and drinks and can focus on the awards show.
Furthermore, others at the bar will invariably be focusing on the Oscars as well. This gives us a chance to discuss winners and losers with others who might share a different perspective than our group of friends. It's never a bad thing to gain new perspectives and share in an event that brings people together. The moral of the story: When Cablevision gives you lemons, make lemonade.

I have watched the Oscars every year as long as I can remember.
This year however, ABC and Cablevision have ruined the evening for financial reasons. I really can't believe that we the viewers are suffering for their greed. We can't watch our fellow Long Islander, Alec Baldwin co-host the Oscars!!!
Shame on ABC, Disney and Cablevision!!!
I'm getting an antenna as soon as I can.
Saddened in Levittown.

I'm no fan of Cablevision, but the blame for this one is squarely on Disney/ABC. Shame on you, Mickey!

I haven't seen Hurt Locker, but I am glad a woman director won for the first time. Way to pave the way for other women.
