The Price Is Really Right: Bob Barker Donates $2.5 Million to PETA

Bob Barker has always been an advocate for animal rights, from demanding that a zoo in North Carolina close their bear exhibit, to paying for an anti-whaling ship to rove the waters. And if you ever watched him conclude an episode of 'The Price is Right,' you know his opinion on spaying and neutering pets.

Now, the Associated Press reports that Barker has donated $2.5 million to the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) to help open a new location in Los Angeles.

He will have the honor of cutting the ribbon at the newly-named Bob Barker Building on Wednesday.

Barker's money will go towards a complete renovation of the building, which will be used as the center for PETA's media, marketing, youth outreach and campaign departments.

The President of PETA, Ingrid E. Newkirk, joked that Barker could have simply donated a refrigerator, but he went way beyond the gift of a household appliance.

Bob Barker needs to get a life. With that amount of money he could be helping those who are homeless or have no food on their tables, but to give it to animals is stupid!!!!!!!!!

Animals are both helpless and innocent and depend upon people to feed, house and administer medical attention. Humans are capable of working, regardless of the type of job - most choose not to pump gas, serve tables etc. They expect the rest of us to supply them with welfare. It is YOU that is the STUPID one, not someone who has worked all his life to support a cause in which he believes. KUDOS and CHEERS to Bob Barker!

There is nothing wrong with giving to a no-kill animal rescue group but PETA is a radical group with a hidden agenda. They never denied their euthanasia of thousands of adoptable pets because they do not believe in people caring for cats and dogs. For that alone, I would never support them. I think Mr. Barker was wrong in his designation for this group and am very disappointed. Best Friends or even better, supporting the struggling rescue groups that are in his area would have been a far better way for him to have shared his wealth. One Hundred Thousand Dollars each donated to 10 local groups would have gone a long way to save thousands of animals in his own county. Better yet, the money could have been used to create a sanctuary for the truly homeless, unadoptable cats and dogs. Mr. Barker, you blew it on this one. There is a difference, a huge difference, between animal rights and animal welfare and you dropped the ball on this one.

The media loves to protray PETA as strange but they are doing a tremendous service and the best thing that people who hate PETA can do is to create an environment in which PETA is no longer needed. Until you are willing to do that, just be quiet and appreciate that some people are willing to give their time and money to help those that are defenseless and that are needlessly abused everyday. Good for Bob Barker!

PETA is one of the WORST groups on the planet!!!
They don't believe that people should even be able to own pets, and EUTHANIZE any animals taken to their "shelters". Gee, that's ENLIGHTENED!!!

With so many more credible and reputable animal rights groups to donate to, WHY, oh WHY Mr. Barker, did you pick PETA? WHY????? They're distasteful, disreputable, inflamatory, controversial in a very negative way, and simply NOT NICE. You could have donated to a local no-kill shelter or rescue group. You could have donated to Farm Sanctuary. Ugh. I am SO disappointed at his choice of a charity.

WAY TO GO BOB BARKER!!!!!!!!! Animals are abused everyday! I eat meat and understand the food chain but feel animals need to be treated with respect!! Look at the Canadian Seal Hunt that will be happening in a few weeks. Baby Seals are horrificly slaughtered for their fur. There is alot more to PETA then just being a Vegan. I support PETA and all of the wonderful things they do.
