Corey Haim Dead at 38 of Apparent Drug Overdose
Corey Haim, the former teen idol who rose to fame in 1980s classics 'The Lost Boys' and 'Lucas,' died Wednesday morning of an apparent drug overdose in Burbank, Calif., the LAPD has confirmed. He was 38. Haim collapsed in the Oakwood apartment belonging to his mother, who was at home at the time and called 911.
"As he got out of bed, he felt a little weak and went down to the floor on his knees," Assistant Chief Coroner Ed Winter said.
According to
reports, there were prescription bottles found nearby, but no illicit drugs. There is no evidence of foul play and the overdose appears to have been accidental.
Haim was taken to nearby Providence St. Joseph Medical Center in Burbank, where he was pronounced dead at 2:15 a.m. An autopsy to determine the cause of death is pending.

Remembering Corey Haim
Canadian-born Haim rose to fame in the 1980s as a child actor. His breakout role was in the critically-acclaimed 1986 film 'Lucas,' where he played a nerdy and skinny student looking to prove himself on a high school football team. He later went on to star in major commercial hits like the vampire movie 'The Lost Boys,' 'License to Drive' and 'Dream a Little Dream.'
Like many child actors, Haim's transition from kid to adult wasn't easy, and the actor's career -- and self-esteem -- faltered over the years.

Most of his films since the 1990s have been direct-to-video and low budget sequels to other films, like 2008's 'Lost Boys 2.' In 1997, he filed for bankruptcy and spent the next decade in and out of rehab for drug addiction. He reportedly suffered a drug-related stroke in 2001. In a 2004 interview, Haim said he began drinking in 1985 and a year later tried his first joint. From there, things went from bad to worse.
"I lived in Los Angeles in the '80s, which was not the best place to be," he said. "I did cocaine for about a year and a half, then it led to crack."
After that, he claimed to have been hooked on pills, and was at one point taking up to 85 a day. "The doctors could not believe I was taking that much," he told
The Sun. "And that was just the Valium -- I'm not talking about the other pills I went through."
Haim's troubled relationship with fellow '80s teen star Corey Feldman was documented in the A&E reality show 'The Two Coreys.' During the show, Haim's substance abuse was often a recurring problem between the two actors. After taping the show in 2008, Feldman cut ties with Haim over his personal problems. "I don't feel that he's a safe person to have around my wife and child at the moment, for a multitude of reasons," Feldman told
PEOPLE at the time.
But recently they patched up their friendship and, not surprisingly, Feldman is devastated by the news of Haim's death.
"This is a tragic loss of a wonderful, beautiful, tormented soul, who will always be my brother, family and best friend," he
writes in a statement, later adding, "I hope the art Corey has left behind will be remembered as the passion of that for which he truly lived."
Haim Career Highlights:
Last year, Haim famously took out a
full-page ad in Variety aimed at getting his career back on track. The ad read: "This is not a stunt. I'm back. I'm ready to make amends. I'm ready to work." He then scored a role in 'Crank 2' alongside Jason Statham, and
spoke to TV Guide about his new role. "I'm loving it, and ... I just want to work, and that's what I'm doing, thank God, on stuff I want to do," he said.
Corey Ian Haim was born Dec. 23, 1971, in Toronto. His mother enrolled the shy Corey in acting lessons at a young age, and before long he was booking commercials. In 1984, Haim scored his debut film role in 'Firstborn,' co-starring Sarah Jessica Parker and Robert Downey Jr. A year later he played Liza Minelli's dying son in the TV film 'A Time to Live.' His career quickly flourished.
The never-married Haim was briefly engaged to Nicole Eggert and Holly Fields, and over the years has dated Victoria Beckham and Alyssa Milano, who tweeted, "RIP sweet boy" upon hearing the news Wednesday morning.

Yeah, Laz, it is a CHOICE. I lived with an addict, I work with them every week. They MAKE that choice to start with the drugs and make a choice EVERY time they puff or inhale or drink or shoot up or gamble. They are making a CHOICE to do so, and I have had many addicts tell me that. It may be a disease but it's still a disease they choose, unlike cancer. They make a conscious decision, you can't tell me they don't know they're taking drugs or that they're being forced. They make that choice to go buy the drug, when they're scrounging for the money they need, when they do it. Choice.
No, I just have NO SYMPATHY for those that refuse to help themselves especially when they had it all and then threw it away. They deserve exactly what they are now, NOTHING!

Not suprised, but still very sad to hear it. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends. He has always been my fav male actor.

REHAB! Rehab is a joke for celebrities because they only stay there for a month or two...or less. Then they are back at the drugs, alcohol, other addictive behaviors. Rehab doesn't work if they don't work it! And then the celebs don't get reprimanded for their actions other than just a slap on the hand. Standards people!!!

To the skeptics and haters: If you knew Corey personally, then you would know he was an angel. He was a really nice person, with a big broken heart and struggled desperately with his demons. He didn't have a mean bone in his body. And for the record, his family and friends did encourage him to go to rehab repeatedly. He attended rehab diligently, multiple times. It wasn't for lack of trying. Now his struggle is over. May he rest in peace and be remembered fondly.

I feel sorry for his family and friends. He voluntarily put the dope in his body, so he's a freakin' idiot. Period. Maybe when we stop feeling sorry for people who CHOSE to do what they do, this country will get back to learning what "taking responsiblity for your own actions" is.
I won't hold my breath.

I think it is pretty sad that Corey could not muster up the courage to take care of his demons. He was a pretty good actor, and I went to elementry school with him in Ontario when I was 5 years old. He was a pretty energetic kid and was fun to play with. I recall valentines day and there were not too many cards given to me, and he wanted to share all of his with me to cheer me up. Thanks Corey, and We will see you in the afterlife. I will keep that valentine card for you! I will never forget the day of the eclipse in 1976 where you hid under the desk in class.

So sad! I agree with the person who wrote that doctors are the "pushers". After 2 brain surgeries, the docs would've put a morphine pump in me & give me as many oxycodones as I wanted. I chose to just deal with the pain.

I REALLY like this Guy. It's sad to see such young people leaving us this way. I hope the Family is ok. God Bless you All. R.I.P. Lucas.

So sad. We met him last year at a convention and he was a mess. I had hoped he wouldn't die of a drug overdose but after meeting and seeing how bad he looked, it's not a suprise. My thoughts and prays are with his family.

What is with all the DRUG stuff.... to much money, to much time, and to little self control... always sorry to hear about people who need to escape so bad they can't find anyone but their drugs... God help the family get through this...... what a TOTAL WASTE of a good person...... ugh!!!!

Dont blame Hollywood you idiot! People overdose in every city in this country. The guy obviously had issue's and never could get a handle on his drug problem. Hopefully he will rest in peace. It is way to young to die.

I was always a fan of the "two Coreys" growing up. For a long time I thought Feldman was the one we would be reading this about first until I saw their reality show. Feldman seemed to have his demons behind him at that point but Haim continued to have problems. It is so sad that his own mother was there; she had to have known he was doing the drugs. My sympathy is with her b/c she probably didn't want her son out on the streets despite his drug abuse. I'm sure she was trying to help him but you can't help someone who isn't ready. Actor or not, another person gone too soon b/c of drug addiction. This is a sad day for Corey Haim's family, friends and fans but do not forget that many "regular" people die each day from the same problem. Don't forget those people; they need your prayers for guidance and help as well

This is not a surprise, but it is sad to see another person die because they couldn't escape their drug addiction. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family in this sad time. I just don't understand why so many celebrities turn to drugs. Just doesn't make any sense to me. Hopefully Corey will find the peace in death that he could not find in life.
