I'm not going to lie -- I haven't paid attention to Corey Haim for years. I was only vaguely aware of his drug troubles and related health problems, and I didn't watch 'The Two Coreys.' I was amused to see his Variety ad last year -- the one where he said he was ready to work again -- the way you feel when an ex you remember fondly does something stupid but sweet. And that's why his sudden death was such a punch to the gut; no matter how long Corey's been off my radar, he was my first love.
It's not like I knew him personally. My first real love, a few years later, was a nice boy from the next high school over -- a boy with floppy hair who, if I'm being honest with myself, strongly resembled 'License to Drive'-era Corey. But every generation has the stars that little girls harbor secret fantasies of marrying, and while today's kids are planning weddings with Justin Bieber and Nick Jonas, I was walking down the aisle with Corey Haim.
I had plenty of choices. Tiger Beat was littered with collectible, detachable posters of River Phoenix, any number of New Kids and Haim's co-star/partner-in-crime, Corey Feldman. At 11, it's not that I was immune to their charms. No red-blooded tween could resist the non-threatening dimples of a teenaged Kirk Cameron. But Haim was the perfect imaginary boyfriend for a sort-of shy, sort-of awkward little girl.
He was just a hair younger than the rest -- actually, he was only five years older than me. Where Kirk Cameron had the curly hair and winning smile of any yearbook's 'Most Popular,' Haim always carried a bit of his gawky, underdog 'Lucas' into every role. Insofar as a sixth grader has a league, he seemed to be in it -- or at least as much in my league as I could make myself believe in my daydreams.
Both he and Corey Feldman, in and out of the many movies they appeared in together, seemed more counterculture than the other heartthrobs -- a little weirder, a little more like real teenagers. Haim had the edge, of course, because he was the cute one.
If 'Lucas' was the movie that sold me on Corey, 'The Lost Boys' gave him the credibility to make my crush feel cool. Long before today's special effects rendered 'The Lost Boys' laughably dated, the movie was a cult favorite. Haim and Jason Patric played brothers in a gang-plagued town -- after Patric's character Michael got sucked into the gang, Sam (Haim) realized the thugs were actually vampires.
'The Lost Boys' marked Haim's first entry in his unofficial partnership with Feldman. The other Corey portrayed a junior vampire hunter, and the two staked their claim on the signature roles in their ongoing relationship: Feldman as the brash comedian and Haim as the vulnerable every-kid.
They later co-starred in 'Dream a Little Dream' -- one of my favorites, but primarily Feldman's vehicle -- and 'License to Drive'. The latter, a coming-of-age comedy, prominently featured a Cadillac and a girl named Mercedes; in 1988, it was the height of adolescent sophistication. Mine were surely not the only parents to inform their daughter a name-change was out of the question, least of all to the trademark of a German luxury automobile.
I feel deeply sad that no one was able to save Corey Haim from his addictions; he was a human being and the death of a 38-year-old man is a tragic waste.
People who die of cancer. People who are killed by drunk drivers. People who drown in floods caused by storms. THESE are victims. People who CHOOSE to take drugs are not victims when they die of an overdose. They are just dead idiots.
Its really sad to see Haim gone. I have been watching the two corey's marathon and its just so sad to see him "struggling".. His spirit is at peace now, God bless you, Corey~
Ok, I see all this sympathy on TV for Corey Haim. I find it annoying. He was a drug addict, and he died the way a drug addict dies. He paid the price for his lifestyle. And while I find it sad whenever someone dies, I do not feel sorry for him. He dug his own grave. This may seem cold, but it isn't like it's a bug surprise. The guy was a victim of his own fame.
I also felt a bit of me died today when I heard the news.Corey? not Corey! Yes, Lost boys, License to Drive..Dream a little Dream..an Lucas..cmon, you gotta have loved him! His smile, that I'm a sweet kid, yet some bad boy under that all...Ohhhh Corey..How we're all gonna miss you!!!Thank you for all the memories...This 30somethin girl will always have a spot for you!
Very sad to hear the news about Corey, I remember when he and Cory Feldman and my son were just teens going to the same auditions together and I would drive them all over to Corey's house so they could hang out afterwords, he was such a polite and kind young man, always happy and smiling. I hope you have found that happiness again.
I feel deeply sorry that my childhood icons are vanishing the earth so early, as river phoenix, brad renfro, jonathan brandis, and now corey haim. What have they done wrong, to amuse us all with their hearts and perfomances, but not able not fill the hole withim their hearts. Peace to you all. Dream a little dream of me ...
We all loved Corey - even before he was famous. And even though we all knew he was in trouble, no one knew how to reach out and help him. He had the potential to be a real "star" but the whole Hollywood scene with all the trappings got the better of him. He was adorable and had real spunk and personality - that was his real inner self. It was just too much, too soon and for someone who was so young and (already) out of control. We all wanted the best for him but he was a train wreck and could never get the control back into his life. I hope he is at rest now. Too young to leave us...wanting more of you...Truly tragic...RIP sweetheart. Your buddies in Miami are grieving for you and missing you already. Eddi, Melissa & Jaimie

this guy was a junkie. a sorry junkie. why do you people put junkies on a pedestal? heath ledger = junkie DJ AM = junkie brittany murphy = junkie
celebrities die and its an accidental overdose. what a joke. a junkie died. it wasnt an accident. taking the wrong dosage of a doctor prescribe medicine is an accidental overdose.
buying drugs and gettin high and dying isnt the same thing. in that case there would be no drug overdoses. they all would be considered accidental.
This is so tragic, I nearly went to the local liquor store to cash in on my deathpole winnings, then you had to tell me it was Corey Haim, not Feldman! What a gip......life is really unfair sometimes.
