Corey Haim wasn't joking when, in early 2008, he placed a full page ad in Variety that declared, "I'm back" and "ready to work," following years of drug abuse, rehab stints and no-budget straight-to-DVD fare.

Since his public declaration, Haim hit the bricks and scored at least 10 film roles, many still in various stages of production, and he was set to make his directorial debut as well. True, the bulk of the films remain in line with lower B-movie fare that generally don't make it to your local cineplex, but his tenacity and dedication to rehabilitating his career make news of his death by apparent overdose on Wednesday harder to swallow.

Writer Eric Goren was working with Haim on 'The Throwaways,' a film the late actor had signed up to direct and star in. He tells PopEater the cast and crew are in "a state of shock" over the death.
